I know the Reverend and others did it before Van Halen but I give Eddie credit for it anyway since he took tapping into new heights. Though he didn't invent it he developed it into his own style
 EDIT: I wish my post had stoped there, right after "I know the Reverend.". That would have been so cool. EDIT2: "I know the Reverend and others." wouldn't have been so bad either. -------------------- My bands homepage

While Eddie VanHalen is probably best known for this technique as he helped make it popular and bring it in to broad awareness, tapping and techniques very similar to it had been employed for some time by players as far back as the fifties (a player named JIMMIE WEBSTER used a two handed technique to demonstrate how sensitive the pickups he used were).
