To Lick, Or Not To Lick?, That is the question

Heya Muris,

I have a question about practicing, and how you went about developing speed and fluency. This comes from practicing your Mixo lesson, the alt picking lesson, (and also having a go with the legato lesson on your website).

The question is, when learning and trying to improve your speed and technique, did you try to make up your own licks, and then practice those until they were fast and fluent, so that they would then help you when covering other music? Or did you pick a piece you liked and played that until you nailed it? AND (sorry for being a pain) if you picked a piece to help develop your technique, did you just concentrate on ripping the licks from it for your own use, or did you play it the whole way through, concentrating on the more difficult parts?

This question comes from two things.
1. In my practice, I will often pick a piece and try to learn it. Though it seems for a lot of the newer (and more challenging) ones that I'm trying recently, it's a harder climb than I have experienced (so I'm doubting my practice schedule!!)

2. In your Mixolydian solo, I notice that you use a legato run that is very similar to the legato lesson on your site. So I presume that you've developed this as a long lick, and then modify it on the fly when improvising and need a lick to go in a certain place?

As always, your help is greatly appreciated. I've finally got time to practice seriously now (been on the go since 6.30 this morning!) I just want to make sure that the time I'm putting in is zoning in on achieving my goals biggrin.gif

Cheers mate,

/T

Hi Tank smile.gif

Glad you asked all this,I'll try to answer the best I can.

Must go back to time when I was full beginner, somewhere in 93.
No clues about scales,chords,techniques etc.
I was listening to players like Knopfler,Gilmour,Hammet,Smith & Murray etc
and trying to figure out licks "by ear",no el. power or net during siege of Sarajevo. smile.gif

Now,I used to play one solo, per example slow one in Master of Puppets,
for million times, until I got it right.
Same thing with more complex stuff like from Satch,Vai or Malmsteen.
But in a meanwhile I was making "my own" licks, just to make it easier for me to play at some point.

And now we're onto legato part in Mix Advanced soloing Lesson.
That's really often lick in legato playing, shapes like that, sliding around etc.
Probably I got "piece" of it listening to Satch, but still I can't find that lick anywhere in his opus,
at least not in full-notes wise. smile.gif

Conclusion is,you MUST listen/playing lick from someone cause everybody have done that.
But also make your own stuff and exercises, inspired by those players.
That's how your individual style shall be made as well. smile.gif

Hope this helps a bit and tell me if you need anything else!

Take care

Hi John smile.gif

Actually I was talking about legato with using of small slides, just to change position/box.
Many players play licks like that but since Satch is our legato master and legato is his trademark,
let's say I borough it from him. wink.gif
