One question bothered me for a long time: Who ame up with detuning the guitar from the standard tuning?
I heard somewhere that Korn started an extreme low-tuned trend 10 years ago. Which Band was the first to use drop d? Which artist used drop c the first time in commercial music. Was drop A# first used for death metal?

...maybe you've got some answers huh.gif

Well, Downtuning is nothing new to instruments especially, i mean you have 6 stringed instruments in other cultures with tunings way lower than EADGBE. but if your just talking about the electric guitar and the rock/metal history, well, there were bands like death who tuned Full step down late 80s, some bands way before them did half step and full step.

Determining the origin will probably be near impossible, and about Korn starting that trend, probably right, but they use 7 strings. and they pretty much laid the nu-metal foundation everyone followed.

Nile, goes to back to the early/ mid 90's and they use Drop A (on a 6 string), And as far as i know, one of the few bands that do, and one of the earliest.

and some hawian guitarists used DGDGBD tuning along time ago, first recording of it were probably...late 40's maybe.

Someone else might know more.

One more thing, Drop D, (According to my past knowledge and the history channel) is a few Centuries old.

I think Tony Iommi of Black Sabbath was the one who brought bright the idea of down tuning to metal/modern day music in the late 60's or early 70's im pretty sure on a few BS records he tunes down one and a half steps but i could b wrong
