As for a gibson i will never buy one. their prices are exuberant and ridiculous. the guitar plays like a dream, i have gotten endless sustain and awesome tone from it. Personally, I'm inclined to stick with brand-names that have a reputation simply because the initial impression is only a small part of the equation. After-sales support, warranty coverage, reliability, all these things are hard to tell from an initial impression. Picking a brand name that nobody has ever heard of (particularly google) is just too much of a risk for my risk-averse nature ;-) Of course, reputation and reality aren't always aligned. Sometimes you read great reviews of something that sucks once you actually have it, so many grains of salt... I agree on the Gibson front - they are waaay overpriced, especially in Australia.
