What is missing from this studio setup that you might normally expect to see?

YUP!!! The MIXING DESK!!! smile.gif Let's look to the future a bit, we've seen home setups go from having a mixing board to being mostly "in the box/computer". What's next? I really think it's going to be something like this.

WHAT DO YOU THINK?

A lot of places don't have a 'board' anymore.

But I still really like the sound of these (Quad 8)...

I like the fact that all the cables are somehow hidden. I really hate cables all over the place.

By the time I started to get "comfortable" in the studio, I really debated with myself if there's really a need for a console. Most musicians think that there always should be a desk and studio owners buy them only for the "cool" factor tongue.gif

I'd love to have a high-end desk, they are to me an inversted that can be used for a lifetime. But most smaller studios carry affordable to mid quality desks and to my ears they aren't really that useful sound-wise (control is a nother story).

At school we had a mackie, the preamps on those were actually ok but the eq's sucked. The worst was the monitor controller, it colored the sound so bad and even today many passive designs do that. Thats why I hated it, one buys nice monitors like Genelec 8050 and then uses a mackie monitor control that totally thins out the sound sad.gif

When price is an issue, there are nice outboard racks out there. One shouldn't expect a desk sound by racks (like buying ssl racks to get an ssl desk sound, that simply doesn't happen...) but can achieve an amazing sound.

Oh, and where's the tape machine? biggrin.gif even if not for tracking, just sending a stereo mix through it can add a lot of beauty to the track too wink.gif

If you're going to have a desk it should be something that enhances the sound ... as the one in the photo of my previous post.
The 'Quad Eight' is a great sounding board whether it's sending to pro-tools or tape. That particular Q8 has had a hand in a few Grammy awards ... as has that guy manning it.

Cool, I haven't heard about those much as can't be forund where I live. There is a sampled library though for nebula, I'll check the demo later on atleast to get a feel of it smile.gif
