I've been playing the Chapman Stick since 1980. And I was kind of stuck in a rt, and since there are no lessons available for the stick on the internet I thought I would take guitar lessons I'm transfer the knowledge to the stick. Great idea huh. Unfortunately I got sucked into the guitar and I can't get out. I love the guitar and I am having a hard time transferring back to the call of the stick.
I know sooner or later I will get back but in the meantime my stick technique is getting old and I'm getting rusty, as are the strings. So I'm about ready to transfer and I realize that the stick has two parts. Guitar part oh, and a bass part. That means to really do it right I have to buy a bass and start taking bass lessons.
That would be awesome and teach me some bass riffs and bass techniques. But this brings up the question oh, am I ever going to get back to the stick? If I start studying base am I going to end up with a half a dozen bass guitars? I got to avoid that trap.
Oh yeah this is an introduction oh, my name is tofu. It can be fried tofu, which hasn't happened lately unfortunately oh, it can be stinky tofu which isn't as stinky as it used to be for some reason... that's a real blessing because I'd go by the stinky tofu shop and have to divert my path to give the stinky tofu shop a wide berth. Now I can barely smell it. I think they calmed it down even though everybody liked it except the tourists.
I'm so tempted to just get better at Guitar. We all know that's a lifetime endeavor and I could if I want, never stop. But I love the stick and she's calling me. I can express my emotions on the stick better than I can on the guitar.
Y'all might think this is funny but it's a real dilemma for me. I'm even tempted to buy another stick to motivate myself but I know that's only a temporary solution. Although some of the new sticks are pretty cool. And less expensive than they used to be.
But for now I will continue to focus on guitar oh, and maybe I'll try to get the stick out and slowly wean myself back on to it. I think that's the best option. But my studio so small and I have to set up a bass amp which I was forced to sell. Beautiful acoustic twin 15in. Long story, I can't say a sad story, more of an asshole story.
I love the guitar so for now that's where I'm going to stay. If I can make room in my studio I'll try to get the stick back into my life. She deserves better than to just sit in the Guitar/ photography Room ( even though it's temperature and humidity controlled) .
I still have a suitable bass amp. Peavey KB 100. It's full range amp but bass on the stick is full range... so if I can fit that all in my studio without tripping on myself as possible. But I'm thinking about moving again! I just finished moving what a nightmare. But these rooms are just too small I can't get a good Studio of it.
Anyway my name is tofu oh, we don't need to go through all that again, feel free to write back if you want. I'm not the pretentious Pinhead type. I'd love to hear what people are doing.
Keep playing keep expanding be well be safe。

Seriously though, I don't think it's bad being a multi-instrumentalist depending on your situation and goals. My main "dream" or goal is just to write music, compose and record from my home studio - or even do session work that way, I suppose. I don't dream of a band situation where I "only" play guitar. Of course time is a finite source for us humans (unlike the immortal jellyfish!), but I'd say keep the instrument you want to keep, play them if the motivation is there - and otherwise venture into the direction you want. If that's guitar, bongos or violin, go there and explore it smile.gif

Anyway, I'm happy to see new faces here at GMC! Welcome, Tofu!

Welcome to GMC,

Great post, I always fancied a Stick but six strings is more than enough.

See you around smile.gif

Awesome to see you here Tofu! 😎

I understand this can become somewhat of an internal conflict for you. But I would like to say that as long as you remain inspired to play and practice any instrument - then not being able to decide on which one is actually a pretty good problem.

I think a majority of [aspiring] musicians out there struggle with keeping motivation up. From personal experience I know it can be hard.

Like I told you before - it would be absolutely awesome to have some Tofu-stick in the next collab 👊

Okay, you have convinced me, LOL I was basically convinced already but it's a good excuse.? I think I'm going to buy a bass. I don't know what kind to buy. I think I will go to the real guitar store in Taipei and look at real bass rather than try to get one over mail order. Maybe I'll send a message to Davie504 and ask him what would be a good bass to learn on. Unless you have some suggestion?
And at the same time I will maintain my guitar playing and I will give my stick some TLC and start playing her again. I can handle that I'm not too busy,. Who knows extra instruments might give me an extra motivation. And what can be so hard about it it's only got four strings ( that was a joke)
And who knows maybe a stick collaboration is sooner than I might have expected. ( but I really hope I don't get hooked on bass), but I must admit it'll be super cool to have three complete setups going at the same time.!
Be well, stay safe, 一 愛。Tofu

If you see the picture, I don't know if you can, this guy is the most dedicated protester I've ever seen. He's on the streets every single day for at least 12 hours. Everybody in downtown San Francisco knows him. Even the shops buy him new shoes when they wear out. I've interviewed him three or four times trying to figure out what his story is. He's a fascinating guy. He's so got his facts together that it makes his story believable. I hope you can see the picture I don't know how this page works very well yet.
I see the problem now. The max file size is 8 MB oh, and his photo is 8.1 MB. It's too bad because he's really a special character. Makes me miss San Francisco. You can check him out on the internet if you want. His name is Frank Chu (you will probably get hundreds of hits) his sign changes daily. He has the best signs I've ever seen I even did a song based on samples from his interview once. It was titled "Migraine".. he was getting a little bit sick and old last I saw him. I hope it's still okay. Anyway enough San Francisco culture. Take care

Good advice, thanks.
I have no aspirations of being a superstar, I just play what I feel at the time... I guess the same will apply to the instrument as well. Males sense to me.. smile.gif happy to be a part of the team. Thx

Its a wonderful thing to be a multi instrumentalist imho smile.gif All of the other instruments you learn, can help you be a better guitar player. Even learning the drums can be a huge benefit to your guitar player. It all pulls from the same well, so to speak, and learning other instruments adds more skills to your skill set. I say go for it!! smile.gif
