Competition: Return of The Wiki Writers
Hi all!
I'm happy to announce that, from this moment, a "classic" competition returns to GMC: "Return of the Wiki-Writers" will be running until the end of October!
Check the http://www.guitarmasterclass.net/wiki/index.php/WikiWriters_Competition_Scoreboard
As many of you already know, this competition is based on our Guitar-Wiki and aims to create lots of new entries, so get your keyboards ready and share your articles with us!
First Place will receive a:
VOX ToneLab ST
Tube power explosion!: 12AX7 tube circuitry, ASIO-compatible USB audio interface, 100 presets, Expression pedal & Multi-effects. How cool is that?
Second Place will receive a:
Fender Champion 600
5-watt all-tube tribute to a historic Fender amp with 50s “two-tone” looks. Higher-gain preamp circuit added to let the overdriven tone exceed that of the original, plus high or low gain inputs. Internal speaker jack enables use of a larger speaker cabinet too!
Third Place will receive a:
PocketPOD Express
Guitar multi effects processor featuring five historic amp models, six stunning effects, and an accurate built-in tuner. Get crystalline clean tones, scorching high-gain distortions and more from Pocket POD Express!
There's an old saying, "If it isn't broken, don't fix it", I believe that pretty much applies to last year's great wiki writers competition, so in this re-issue we are maintaining the original spirit,
changing only the scoring system a bit to reward outstanding articles & keep the scoreboard updated from beginning to end, without having to add any extra points once the competition ends. The rules and operation are as follows:- Each entrant can submit as many articles as he or she wants
- When your article is complete, start a thread on the Wiki Writers board with a title like "WikiWriters Entry : <Name of your article>". Include a link to the article in the text of the first post
- These threads can be used by others to discuss your article (that's always the fun part!)
- Articles entered on the WikiWriters board will be judged by the seniors/mods, and given a grade between 1 and 8
- An article that scores less than 3 won't be considered a valid entry and won't contribute towards your competition score
- Since we are after quality as well as quantity, each article may by request be regraded one time. If you have worked to improve your article, you may request a regrade by starting a new thread for the article and marking it "WikiWriters Regrade : <name of your article> and again include a link inthe text of the first post. If your grade is improved, the additional points will be added to your overall competition score.
- You may elect to improve existing Wiki articles, in which case a couple of additional points apply:
- Make sure you call out the fact that you are improving an existing article make your thread read WikiWriters Improvement: <Name of your article>
- The mark you will get will be treated as a regrade - e.g. you will only get points for the improvement not the whole article. We can use Wiki facilities to see excatly what you have changed and how much you have added so that part is all above board and easy to see.
- We will have a leaderboard in the Wiki so people can keep track of how their competition is doing, and make further efforts to improve their own score
- Articles that duplicate entries already in the Wiki will be disqualified
- Entries can be on any guitar related subject - Gear, Players, Bands, Theory, GMC etc!, take a look at our http://www.guitarmasterclass.net/wiki/index.php/Portal:List_of_portals & http://www.guitarmasterclass.net/guitar_forum/index.php?showtopic=27205 to find a source of inspiration!
- Absolutely no copyright violations or plagiarism will be tolerated - any evidence of this and the perpetrator will be disqualified (we have ways to check)
- The Judges Decision is Final
- No Cash or alternative prizes will be offered
- In the event of a tie, a tiebreaker activity will be emplyed to break the deadlock.
- The competition ends October 31st at midnight (Central European Time)
As stated above, articles can be graded between 1 and 8 points. Here are some
examples so that you know what to aim for:
This incomplete kind of article would rate a 1:
http://www.guitarmasterclass.net/wiki/index.php/WikiWritersExample
This one would rate a 5:
http://www.guitarmasterclass.net/wiki/index.php/Arch_Enemy
This one would rate an 8:
http://www.guitarmasterclass.net/wiki/index.php/Bruce_Springsteen
Please understand this isn't an exact science, so take those articles as a reference. Browse this Wiki Forum to check last edition entries too, they are labeled "WikiWriters Entry" at their title
Also note, an important part of gaining a high score is the use of correct wiki formatting, adding things such as category, pictures, titles, etc. See our http://www.guitarmasterclass.net/wiki/index.php/Wikipedia:Tutorial if you are in doubt,
it's really easy!.
Remember that, on top of the competition prizes, 5 quality articles will qualify you for a WikiWriters badge!

I might give this a go. The prizes are awesome.
Posted by: Kristofer Dahl Sep 5 2009, 02:00 PM
The prizes are beyond fantastic - I want all three of them!
The valvetronix technology has been killer all the times I have tried it - and that little tube amp could be used for anything: Killer studio tracks or just as an awe-inspiring practicing amp.
And I am sure the pocket pod needs no further introduction! It is capable of producing unbelievable sound quality.
Looks like our wiki will benefit from this

Without Fran participating in this competition, there might be a chance of actually winning the first price!
(I was ranked 3rd in the last Wiki competition, just a few points behind the second place while Fran was ranked first with a gigantic number of points ahead and over 100 written articles...)

I had a blast last year with this competition
Hehe
Go for it guys, this competition is all about creating nice articles, all you need is a keyboard and motivation to talk about your favourite bands, equipment, guitarists...
Many days we waste 20 minutes watching some worthless TV program etc., just take that time to make articles and anyone can easily win this one
Looking forward to those entries!

Can wiki portal admins participate? I'll just change some names, delete some articles which I find to good to compete against....
just kidding ofcourse!
Ow Fran.... I won't put every new article on the main page with "new article" because that would be 20 articles a day

I agree!
Will post there too

Fantastic prices and idea for competition. I can't wait to read those Wiki entries now
Posted by: Marc_Maiden Sep 6 2009, 05:51 PM
awesome! so we can write any articles and have it count? like gear reviews?
Posted by: Fusar Sep 6 2009, 05:57 PM
Great timing! Two days ago, I wanted to write something (for me), then thought writing a little photo guide would not be wrong, then realized that there loads of it on the I-net and that I could not bring new aspects...and then did write nothing...so this competition is the best thing which could happen to me
I've already found my theme, think Oasis is worth to be covered on our GuitarWiki

Yes, anything guitar/gmc related: bands, guitars, multi effects, amps, guitarists... whatever!

Great, go for it!
As you say, this is the perfect opportunity to write some articles about the bands, gear & stuff we love and get some awesome prizes in the process

Most album reviews from the forum have already been converted Kaz (99% I'd say), and no, the articles have to be originally written by you, not "copied" or "converted" for competition purposes

As stated in the competition rules, you can upgrade the existing article, and you'll be rewarded with points for the improvement (we can check which part has been improved and which part was already there!).
So go for it & edit the existing entry to improve it

No problem. GMC has members from all over the globe, and sometimes our English is not perfect, just give it a go & don't worry too much about grammar, someone can always correct it later

Can you do a video review along with the wiki article?
Sure!, as long as it's an "extra" to enrich a regular entry, and not just a video alone.

All right, I'm in Those prizes are too tempting. I presume album reviews are acceptable? Good way to get started at least.
