Hey All,

You know that "zone" when you're improvising great and not thinking? It's just coming out of your fingers and sounds great? Does anyone have any tips on getting to that point quickly? When playing over a backing track, sometimes it takes me a good 3 minutes into a solo to get in the "zone" and I can't figure out what triggers that feeling.

I'm sure there must be some professional players out there who might have a trick or two to get to that magical place quickly.

Try playing you'r favourite licks in the backing's key, than try to think of some cool melody to jump start things.

We've all been there laugh.gif

Iluha - melody must be the thing to jumpstart the process. Start w/ a groovy melody, then take off.

I don't think there is a magic way to learn it. I would try to:

1. play the licks You like --> because You most probably know them by heart.
2. do some simple improvisations with scales, even the basics that Kris shows in the beginner section will do, when You improvise You will have to feel something, and that will be the zone.
3. Listen to nice music ( well I am afraid that it is mandatory for all of us, if we want to be "open minded" guitarists )
4. Practice with the metronome, without learning how to hit the string as much You want, when You want, it is much harder to play what You feel, I for instance can "play" in my imagination much better than in reality, I lack the skill to play what is in my head.

Also, when the guitarist is playing a solo, he is thinking about it. But not in terms "legato, bend, now slide, okay done", but thinking with notes, sounds. That's anyway what I am thinking. Some true guitar players can elaborate I believe wink.gif

Well, there isn't really any "rule" or anything for that, but I would say good mood and music that you like will get you there fast enough smile.gif

Well there is no general rule about it, just try to relax as much as you can and allow yourself to get "lost" into the mood of the track and improvise!

yup I`d go along with that, a great backing will always get me in a good mood, I may get a catchy hook that I like and it all starts coming together, then it all starts flowing smile.gif

I just like to put on a song I really like, And listen to a few songs after that, Gets me pumped up and ready to go. Also sometimes if you take a day or two break from guitar (which is a good thing every now and then), when you come back you will be tearing it up! smile.gif

I like to start playing very slow, and very emotional licks. Let your emotion take it from there.
