Let's work on building a solo. I'm going to break down the solo I recently did with my buddy Hamin from Iran. You may have seen the video that I shared in another post. Let's break it down and take it bit by bit. The first bit is not shreddy, it's a slow melodic bit, but it's got a crazy pinky stretch involved. It's not a spiff like IMHO unless you have to push your ability a bit.

*Have a look at the video and then the tablature.

This is based on my recent collab with Iranian Djent fiend HAMIN. Here is the full solo. I realize this bit requires a pinky stretch that not everyone is going to be able to pull off, but it's worth a try to see if you can get your reach a bit further. I see lots of folks that need some work on their pinky and sticking the landing. This is the lick for you. smile.gif

*NOTE: Keep it smooth and under control. If you find you are losing control, slow down just a pinch.

BACKGROUND / COMMENTS : Try this lick with the backing! Keep it clean. Repeat as needed

Hit me up with any questions!

PERFECT!!!!!! FREAKING PERFECT!!!! PHIL!!!!!!! This does my heart good. You have nailed the living crap out of this one. Spot on my friend!
All of your work is paying off. You are starting to be able to grasp licks quickly and be able to play them back with verve and gusto and splendid technique!! The tricky bit here is that crazy pinky stretch that requires you to stick the landing and then gives you no time to hit the next note. It's easy to cock this up. The good news is you nailed it!! Nice!
You just...
LEVELED UP!!!

Thanks Todd, I really appreciate your kind words.

Due to that thing called life, I have been struggling to do structured practise. What I've been doing is a lot of improvising over random YouTube backing and for some reason my technique seems to have improved.

Cheers buddy

You've stumbled across one of the great secrets of becoming a better player!!!!! Just grabbing a backing and playing over top of it!!! It's a great way to work on everything all at once. Keep it up!!! After all, the entire point of all of this is to play music!

It's a secret no longer smile.gif Not really a "secret" as such, but something that folks don't often realize will actually help them more than they may have realized.

Yeah that's what I meant really, it needs to be advocated more I think because a lot of people, including me, seem to think that they don't know enough or don't have enough skills at their current level to actually play musically along with a backing but, get the scale generator up and the job's good or, as I've been doing, find the scale notes outside of your usual box shape to add two or three frets either side. OK they're the same notes but allow more expression as you can slide more etc

I just added the backing for #45 to the lesson (was going to wait till 46 today but it goes with 45 as well) I'm always pushing folks to play with actual music as that's the entire point of all of this. Which is another thing I"m constantly banging on about. It's natural for students to get focused on lessons/rec etc. as they are core to skill building. I always try to push students in bootcamp to use music instead of a metronome once they get past the early stages. It doesn't always work. Some students just don't feel comfy playing with music until a bit later. I'm in full agreement though, once the basic skills are there, just jamming is a great way to keep it fun and work on applying the skills learned. Carlos (a fellow bootcamper) is a great example. He always uses the backing t rack I provide on lessons and then finds backings on his own that match the key.

I've started using musical backings in quick licks as well which I plan to go further on. The curret 3 part series is based on a solo I did recently and we are going to use the backing track as an option.Part II is going up today!!! It will have the backing with it.

Nice! The first take is one I"m looking at. Well played! This has a HUGE stretch in it, paired with a "stick the landing" with a pinky. The stretch is so large that it's very hard to use any other finger but the pinky. You stick the landing quite well and play the lick with confidence. This not an easy lick as it does require all of these elements to put in to play. If the palm mute is off, of the picking is off, if the timing is off, if the pinky is off, the lick falls apart. The good news is you have a full command of the techniques involved. Well done indeed!

WOW! Killer job. I love what you did with it. Also, didn't overplay it which is always tempting even for me smile.gif You have perfect hand synch, your notes are clean and clear. It's always inspiring to see you play these. I really hope other people watch and are inspired as well. Also, that is a Darn killer IBBY you have there. Looking back I should have never sold mine. But what is life without a few regrets smile.gif As for this you krushed it!

WELL PLAYED! This requires a big pinky stretch and you gotta stick the landing each time. The real challenge is keeping it smooth while making that reach with the pinky. It's a chance for the hand to to find out if it' got pinky chops. You certainly do! You stick the landing each time. Your hand synch and muting remain good. For a bit more of a workout, put this on a loop with a metronome and play it lower on the neck. The lower you play it the harder it gets!

You just...

LEVELED UP!!!!
