GMC Forum _ CHILL OUT _ Ibanez Rg8 8 String Guitar $399

Posted by: Todd Simpson Dec 28 2012, 09:46 PM

There is a new 8 string guitar from Ibanez that only runs about $399 and I've just got to try one and make a video review.

ANYBODY PLAYED ONE OF THESE?

I don't have one either, but I would be curious to see your review.

Yes, please review. I am leery about models this low priced. Is it still good quality, is what I want to know.

Lots of strings and not too much money! That's a good deal! biggrin.gif

Posted by: WeePee Dec 29 2012, 09:13 AM

Let's see what you think about it Todd! I trust a man who knows his Ibanez tongue.gif

Man! I gotta ask my local GC to order a white one!! I want to play one myself now! I could upgrade the pickups if I like the guitar!!

Truth is... the white one looks KILLER!!!

I'm gonna get one of these in 2013 and I"ll let you guys know as soon as I"ve got a video review up! The pickups are evidently not the best in the world, but that's easy to fix with new pickups smile.gif Then again, the pickups in my ancient RG560 are not exactly "High End" or active or anything like that and they still work well for the guitar.

I haven't had the chance to play one yet, but I hear great things from my friends. They seem to be great guitars for the price!

On a related note, I bought the 7 string equivalent of this (Ibanez RG7321, $400, also the "budget" model line) and ended up loving it! I bought Bareknuckle Cold Sweats for it and it's now my best sounding guitar, hands down.

Just mention it because if you find an RG8 that plays really well and looks good, replace the pickups and you could have a killer guitar on your hands!

Those cold sweat pickups are THE THING biggrin.gif one of the guys in my band owns a very cheap Ibanez baritone guitar he bought for about 320 bucks on Ebay. He strapped a BK Coldsweat bridge pickup and BLAM! Instant crushing tone! biggrin.gif

Posted by: Todd Simpson Jan 8 2013, 09:23 PM

The 7321 is a GREAT way to get in to 7 string nuttiness! I have a 7320 and I LOVE it!!! You can find the 7320 on ebay, used for around 3 or 4 hundred if you ever decided to upgrade. It mostly adds a locking trem. The other bits are different, but the trim is maybe the BIG difference.

The guys at BARE KNUCKL PICKUPS make some killer stuff! For you guys who haven't heard of them yet, check them out. Their web site has sounds samples and such. They will add new life to any guitar smile.gif

Yesterday, I ordered this Ibanez RG8 from Guitar Center! smile.gif I got the black one because I didn't want a guitar that had two colors (white body and black headstock). Besides, black looks so mean!! Excited!

Todd, Fireball - Please keep us updated, I've really wanted to dabble in the serious drop tune stuff but can't justify breaking my bank account to do it. This looks like it would be perfect.

Looking forward to your reviews!

Ive never heard anything bad about them!

I've got a friend on Facebook who has it and he loves it. I've actually been looking into getting one myself.

Posted by: thefireball Mar 15 2013, 11:22 PM

I'm keeping a close watch on my email because I will get an automatic notification when it arrives at Guitar Center.

Posted by: thefireball Mar 15 2013, 11:53 PM

Order was shipped out.

So far I like it but I must admit I'm getting way more string buzz than I"m used to. With the neck set flat and with low action, it buzzes far worse than my ibanez 7 string. It plays great though. Also, the pickups are the one thing I'm thinking about swapping out. Perhaps with a set of DEATHBAR pickups. These pickups sorta just sound cheap. I realize they had to cut corners to get this guitar this cheap. For this price, the guitar is impressive. If you want to get started with an 8 string I"d say it's the way to go. It just plays SOOOOOOOO much better than the ESP 8 string I sold. And that one cost about double and had neck through body and EMG pickups!! String tension was awful on the ESP, so tight that made bends a pain. The ibanez is smooth as glass I'm comparing apples to apples in that both guitars were setup by the same guy for the same purpose to my specs. THe IBBY just CRUSHED the ESP in playability.

Again, the string buzz is my main issue, and the cheap pickups. But I can work around those things at this price smile.gif

I have picked up my new guitar and I love it! I changed the strings to Ernie Ball 8-string set because the factory ones were way too floppy.

I am tuned to EAEADGBA. These new strings play much better. I did some adjustments on the height and intonation and the fret buzz has been minimized. I was playing around with my EP's title track "Living in the Last Days." Coming up with some 8 string parts. I could probably include it as a bonus track, as my Jackson SLSMG will remain the main guitar on the EP. The next album will be 8-string throughout. haha

Congrats on the 8-string Fireball.

Do you think you'll be changing the pickups at all?

Yeah, though, I'm not sure what kind yet. I have to slow down my spending. Thanks. And here's my EP's title track with the 8-string.
