GMC Forum _ Bands and Guitarists _ Fusion

Posted by: Fsgdjv Feb 28 2009, 07:01 PM

Hello gmc!

I'm trying to find some new fusion bands, but I have no idea where to start. I basically only listen to The Mahavishnu Orchestra and Caisopea, but apart from that I don't know any fusion bands basically.

To be honest, what I'm really looking for is bands with solos that are similar to http://www.guitarmasterclass.net/solo-guitar/fusion-jam-intermediate/ and http://www.guitarmasterclass.net/ls/mixolydian-rock-fusion-licks/. I'm hopeless yes, but any recommendations will be deeply appreciated.

You could check out some Greg Howe stuff.
I'm looking for similar bands but I also have no idea where to start.
If you just want to listen a little to fusion stuff I highly recommend to look for Tom Quayle on YouTube, I just love his playing as it sounds new and refreshing smile.gif

Wow, why didn't I think of Greg Howe, he's amazing. Thanks. I'll look up Tom Quayle, but I'm not a huge fan of listening to stuff on youtube, but if it's good I guess it's worth the sacrifice laugh.gif

If you like a heavier edge to your fusion I highly recommend Hectic Watermelon

Wow, I just looked them up on myspace, this is exactly the type of fusion I'm looking for. Thank you so much!

And keep the recommendations coming biggrin.gif

A few possibilities:

Alan Holdsworth and IOU (or Alan Holdsworth solo, or with UK), Steps Ahead (more like Casiopia) and/or Michael Brecker, Bill Brufford, Dixie Dregs, Mike Stern, Alex Machacek, Alesandro Benvenuti, Bill Conners (sax player rather than guitar player for fusion) , Crusaders, Jean Luc Ponty, later Miles Davis, Frank Zappa - especially when Vai was tabbing.
