Here is where the magic happens: the REC board turns bedroom guitarists into real pros. Remember - it doesn't matter if you fail or pass, as long as you keep posting REC takes you will progress.

The entries will be graded by a number of instructors. After grading, members will be accredited with the appropriate points if they pass, and adjustments will be made to their REC level.
Passing grade is 6 or higher.

Original lesson: Satriani Made Easy - Rock by Ben Higgins

Hello folks, Not been on this for long but thought I should post to get feedback. As usual I've done better takes without the video running but that's the way the wagon rolls. I was surprised to see how frantic my vibrato looks on the video so some tips for that would be good. I have to say, this is the most enjoyable lesson I've done, it's nice to be able to play something recognisable as Satch style without having all of the master techniques in your fingers.

Hi Phil,

as I've said at the mentoring program, you are doing a great job with this lesson. There are many positive aspects to mark here but I'll only talk about the details that I think can make this one even better... biggrin.gif

- Tweak Tone: I think that your tone could sound warmer. Experiment with EQ.
- Timing is good but there are some moments where you go after the beat.
- The second section, the faster changes can sound smoother. Work on articulation and vibrato.

That's all by now. Just work on those details.

Hey Phil! smile.gif

Well...to be honest I really like this take. Haven't found anything serious to fix. Let's just discuss those more and those less subjective aspects.

Tone - I guess you were trying to emulate Satriani's tone from Surfuing with the Alien album smile.gif For me it sounds ok even though modulation effects like chorus o flanger distort the idea of how correct is your pitch while bending on vibrato and maybe that's why I had a feeling that....

...2.Vibrato needs a fix. You tend to bend the note a little an increase the pitch while you vibrate it.

3. timming-wise There are just a few spots to fix...I bet those are the ones that were doing great until you've pressed REC button smile.gif

Hi Phil, this is some good stuff. I love how authentic the 80's Satch tone is biggrin.gif

After the 1st slide you went back to begin the next phrase a little quickly, at 0:11. Try to avoid prematurely playing notes, especially in a melody as sparse as this because it will really be noticeable.

On the ascending section towards the end, try to use your 3rd finger as well.. you're using only two fingers for those 3 note phrases. Try to use 1st, 2nd and 3rd for the phrases that don't include slides. For the ones that do use slides, obviously you only need 2 fingers for them anyway so you can stay as you are with those.
