Hi George, how are you?

Great to find your video playing this GMC lesson. This is a good choice to start. There are a few things that you need to work on this one to be able to master the take. These details will need special attention and you'll have to focus on 1 at a time to get used to them.

The first thing that I note is that your bending needs some adjustment. You are letting the note sound and then adding the vibrato, that's ok! but your vibrato is not going natural with the groove of the backing, and sometimes it's a bit irregular. This is not a dramatic issue but you need to pay some attention to it and maybe practice over the original lesson to emulate Ben's vibrato rhythm and width.

The second issue that I note is the apparition of unwanted noises here and there. You need to be sure that you are muting all the strings that you are not playing. The lower strings can be muted with the palm of your left hand, the higher ones can be muted with your left hand index finger (as a bare). The closer strings to the one that you are playing is usually muted with the same finger that is pressing the played fret.

Finally, there are some timing issues in some section, for example when you play the slides at 00:36. This can also be adjusted by workin on small blocks over the original lesson.

Ok mate, please let me know if these feedback is clear and if you have any question.

Keep on the hard work!

Posted by: George Hlio Feb 27 2016, 05:35 PM

Thanks for the honest feedback Gabriel!!

1) So about my vibrato: should I add it the exact same moment that I play the note?
2) About the unwanted noises: I am trying to mute the other strings, but is it possible that the neck is too thick for my hand to mute the strings while I am adding vibrato( my guitar is Schechter Hellraiser C-7)? I'll pay attention though
3)The timing issue I understand...
4) Do you think my posture is good?
5) Can I work simultaneously with another lesson so that I clear my mind and post a 2nd REC of Vai made easy later(of course I'll pay attention to the things that you said)?

Posted by: Gabriel Leopardi Feb 28 2016, 04:58 PM

1) NO! it's exactly as you are doing it, first let the note sound and then add vibrato.

2) If the neck seems "thin", muting should be even easier. In this case the noises are from the open strings so this means that you are not muting the strings instead of pressing unwanted frets...

3) Ok!

4) It's not bad but you don't look comfortable. Try to fix it and make your posture look more like Ben in the lesson. It's important and healthy to stretch your back while playing.

5) Sure! It's very important to keep motivation and have fun so choose another lesson and start working!

Posted by: George Hlio Feb 28 2016, 05:21 PM

Thanks Gabriel!!
Crystal Clear!!
Currently I am working on alternate picking #4 by Darius
I think I will have a REC soon!

Posted by: George Hlio Feb 29 2016, 12:17 PM

Also Gabriel there is something in my guitar playing that is VERY IMPORTANT for me!

For some reason(neurological, psychological I don't know) I find it 100 times EASIER to play any solo or scale sequence with ECONOMY picking! I do of course alternate picking on 1 string but I do directional when I am crossing strings..
I've developed this kind of playing for a few months but then my first guitar teacher made it obligatory for my to play with strictly alternate picking for everything...The result was that I gave up my guitar playing for a few months and now I got back to my feet again...And the new start with GMC is really refreshing and I am extremely enthousiastic!

So is it Ok to do as I like ONLY for this aspect of my guitar playing please?

Posted by: Gabriel Leopardi Feb 29 2016, 02:07 PM

Hi George, I don't think that this is a problem if you don't feel that this limits your technique. There is a very popular guitarists who is a monster player who only uses economy picking, his name is Frank Gambale. You can explore about him and see how he deals with using economy picking for everything.

Posted by: George Hlio Feb 29 2016, 08:27 PM

Great Gabriel... Thanks!!!

Well 1) you got me Frank Gambale is amazing! I tried in the past to tackle his ROUNDS guitar workouts but they were too fast for me... Doesn't matter now..
2) Another REC http://www.guitarmasterclass.net/guitar_forum/index.php?showtopic=56685&pid=728079&st=0&#entry728079

Can't wait for your feedback!!

Posted by: Gabriel Leopardi Mar 1 2016, 05:57 PM

Hi George, if you have the rounds in audio files you can use a software called "Amazing slow downer" to slow the tempo. Frank uses that technique really smoothly, but you need to know that he created his own approached to scale and arpeggio shapes.

I'll check the REC take and give you feedback there. wink.gif

Posted by: George Hlio Mar 2 2016, 01:44 PM

1) Great! I'll check more of Gambale's interviews and videos about his playing style!
2) Thanks for the feedback! Pretty clear!
3) I just started working on Wylde Made Easy...Any news I'll let you know wink.gif

Posted by: Gabriel Leopardi Mar 2 2016, 02:07 PM

Great! I'll wait for news.

Posted by: George Hlio Mar 5 2016, 12:09 AM

Hi Gabriel!

So as I said here is my REC on Wlyde made easy...As far as my questions they are in the description of the video
http://www.guitarmasterclass.net/guitar_forum/index.php?showtopic=56697&pid=728374&st=0&#entry728374

Looking forward to your feedback! smile.gif

I'll be there in a moment, thanks for the link here. wink.gif

Posted by: George Hlio Mar 7 2016, 01:04 AM

Thanks Gabriel for the feedback!! I'll work on my bends and vibrato and give it a 2nd try...I am already preparing my 2nd take on Vai made easy...Apart from solo I am working on Metal for beginners-Megadeth for my metal rhythm, so that you can have an idea and give me feedback also on metal rhythm which is very important for me!
I'll have a take soon!

Posted by: Gabriel Leopardi Mar 7 2016, 04:38 PM

Great. Do you have any take on that rhythm lesson?

Posted by: George Hlio Mar 7 2016, 06:01 PM

Not yet, but soon... Should I go for a REC on this one, or do you want me to just have a take without putting it on the REC zone?

Posted by: Gabriel Leopardi Mar 8 2016, 02:15 PM

It's up to you. REC is better because you receive feedback from different instructors. You also receive grading but it's just as reference of your progress.

Posted by: George Hlio Mar 8 2016, 09:49 PM

Hi Gabriel!
As you asked me, here is the metal rhythm REC:

http://www.guitarmasterclass.net/guitar_forum/index.php?showtopic=56707&pid=728576&st=0&#entry728576

And Gabriel... thanks for all the help and the time you dedicate to make me a better guitar player!!

Posted by: Gabriel Leopardi Mar 9 2016, 02:50 PM

Commented and graded there! smile.gif

Posted by: George Hlio Mar 9 2016, 04:35 PM

As always thanks for the awesome feedback Gabriel!
I have some questions of course
QUESTIONS NOT EXACTLY RELATIVE TO THE FEEDBACK:
1) I understand and I will play it every day as a part of my rhythm workout, but right now should I go for another take as soon as possible or should I move on to work and do a REC for another metal rhthm lesson?
2) I would really love to do your Papa Roach goes djent lesson, but since it is in Drop C, can I change the key and play it on Drop D or Drop A(since I have a 7 string)?

QUESTIONS RELATIVE TO THE FEEDBACK:
1) About the chord changes point, can you give me an example on my take, so that I can focus?
2) I don't understand what you mean about the keys being the first and the following elements. Could you further clarify?
3) About the dynamics point I understand, but I have 1 question: Are the dynamics associated with how hard I hit the strings?

FINAL QUESTION:
You are my mentor and you have already seen 4 RECs from me, so what do you think that I should work next?
Should I go on my own pace or is it something that you consider important that I must do?

Posted by: Gabriel Leopardi Mar 11 2016, 02:00 AM

Hi friend!

QUESTIONS NOT EXACTLY RELATIVE TO THE FEEDBACK:

1) I think that it's ok to start a new lesson and keep practicing the old one. When you feel some improvements you can post the lessons at REC, no matter which one first.

2) Sure, you can do it and add a text explaining this when sharing the lesson at REC.

QUESTIONS RELATIVE TO THE FEEDBACK:

1) 00:9, 00:17, 00:51, 1:08.

2) My phrase is not totally clear. I meant that the first element in my comment there(chord changes) and the following (dynamics), added to the comment by Darius about tone are things that will help to make your take sound clearer and cleaner.

3) Are the dynamics associated with how hard I hit the strings? EXACTLY.

FINAL QUESTION:
You are my mentor and you have already seen 4 RECs from me, so what do you think that I should work next?
Should I go on my own pace or is it something that you consider important that I must do?

I think that you are on the right track with your practice. Regarding technique I think that it's ok to continue polishing the current lessons and add some new stuff a bit more difficult. It's important to have a balanced routine that covers different techniques, but also some theory / composing stuff to be sure that you are training your creativity and learning concepts to be able to create your own solos and songs. It's also important to analyze the lessons that you learn to understand the theory behind it. Finally, creating your own variations of the solos over the backing tracks is very recommended.

Posted by: George Hlio Mar 11 2016, 07:02 AM

Thanks Gabriel!!!
Crystal clear as always with the mentoring!!!!
I will try something harder and I will improvise on the backing tracks creating variations of the solos!!!
Whatever news and questions I'll let you know here as soon as possible...

Hi George! Thanks for the links, I'll comment there. wink.gif

Posted by: George Hlio Mar 16 2016, 08:43 PM

Hi Gabriel!!!
Thanks for the feedback which is great as always!!!
For the Vai made easy REC I have nothing to say except thanks for your kind words, since although you are honest and always point out my mistakes, you also reward my efforts!

QUESTIONS ASSOCIATED WITH THE METAL RHYTHM WORKSHOP REC:

1) Sometimes I feel like I cannot hear the backing track loud enough, so that might be the cause of my timing issues, but on the other hand of couse you are right in the point that this take does not feel easy for me so it needs more time...Should I put the backing tracks a little louder?

2) I use 2.0mm dunlop picks...Although I have a feeling of ''safety'' when I play with them, I cannot dig the strings...What would you suggest? Can I be benefited from using thinner picks(by your experience)? By the way I've used thinner picks before but I found the thick ones more comfortable..

QUESTION NOT ASSOCIATED WITH THE METAL RHYTHM WORKSHOP REC:

1) When I post the videos in the REC zone I can't find anything really wrong with my takes, but when you give me your feedback I become aware of my mistakes and try to fix them. So my question is: Do you believe that I should dedicate more time on my takes(something I already do anyway- I mean I really work hard) before posting them on the REC zone or is it good enough and I should continue with what I do?

Posted by: Gabriel Leopardi Mar 18 2016, 07:47 PM

Hi George, thanks for your words, I'm happy to know that my feedback helps.

About your questions:

1) If you can't hear them put the louder for recording, then when mixing set it as it sounds in the lesson.
2) I think that you'll find more comfortable with 1.5 mm picks that are still thick enough for metal but more comfortable than 2.00.

1) No, it's ok to share takes every time you want to receive feedback from us. That's the main goal of REC.

Posted by: George Hlio Mar 18 2016, 08:57 PM

Thanks Gabriel!
1) Everything ok, but for the 1st question, I am producing the video with a simple webcam, I have no DAW or anything to make the mix, of course in the near future I plan to buy an audio interface, but currently that option is unavailable sad.gif Or is there some way I can manage the situation differently?
2) I am now working on your Papa Roach goes Djent lesson in Drop A with my 7 string...Amazing lesson really, I am having lot's of fun!
Can't wait to become a little better so I can start playing your metalcore series!!!

Posted by: George Hlio Mar 20 2016, 05:29 PM

Also Gabriel, I have now ready one more double REC:

https://www.guitarmasterclass.net/guitar_forum/index.php?showtopic=56758&b=1&st=0&p=0&#entry0

and

https://www.guitarmasterclass.net/guitar_forum/index.php?showtopic=56759&b=1&st=0&p=0&#entry0

Let me know when you can about your thoughts on my takes!!!! Thanks Gabriel!!!!

Posted by: George Hlio Mar 21 2016, 10:59 AM

Hi Gab! Thanks for the feedback on Papa Roach goes djent! As I stated above I have no DAW, I simply record through a video webcam! I have transposed the track with a programm called transcribe but you are right it does not sound that much...So from what I understand I should put the backing track higher, right?

Posted by: Gabriel Leopardi Mar 21 2016, 01:39 PM

Check out this video and let me know if it's clear:

Posted by: George Hlio Mar 21 2016, 03:19 PM

Hi Gabriel!
The video you posted me seems a lot of work and I will work on it over the next few days, so I 'll try it step by step and ask you anything during the process...
Also thanks about being always so accurate and quick with your feedbacks on my RECs! I always appreciate it!!!

Posted by: Gabriel Leopardi Mar 22 2016, 02:28 PM

Using this video will be a very wise invested time... smile.gif

Thanks for your words. wink.gif

Posted by: George Hlio Feb 11 2018, 01:38 PM

Hi Gabriel!
Nice to be back in our mentoring program!
I am currently working on 2 lessons : Metal essentials 2 and beginner soloing 2 by Darius
I will soon have a REC on the first one, but at the beginner soloing I am having trouble with the bends especially the unison!
I do have a 7string with 10s and 11s so I find it harder to bend
I have also bought a cheap 6string lefty and I am thinking of putting 9s. Is it ok to work on the track with 9s?
I think it will be easier from the perspective of both the thickness of the strings and the thickness of the neck

Posted by: Gabriel Leopardi Feb 11 2018, 09:23 PM

Hi George! Great to find a new post from you here! We are back! smile.gif

I don't think that it's a good idea to have different gauges on guitars that have the same tuning. If you practice on 09 strings guitar, then you'll find the other guitar so difficult to play with. Unless you tune your 7 strings guitar lower, I would keep the same string gauge on both.

I'll wait for your new vids!

Posted by: George Hlio Feb 12 2018, 10:30 AM

Basically it is the opposite... I practice on 10s(EBG) for the 3 highest strings and 11s on 4 bottom strings (BEAD).
And I actually find it difficult to unison bend on 10s, but you are right! I must put more work and get used to bending

Posted by: George Hlio Feb 12 2018, 07:45 PM

Gabriel I have post a new REC ! Cannot wait to see your opinion! If you would like you can write it on the REC zone, so that I can read all the reviews together...
Thanks!

Posted by: Gabriel Leopardi Feb 13 2018, 03:35 PM

Done!

Posted by: George Hlio Feb 13 2018, 04:58 PM

Thanks Gabriel!
I use the suggested Reaper plugins for the sound and I just put the mix 100%, which makes me a little bit anxious, because it seems that every single playing detail matters! But that is cool since that is how I will be a better player!
Thanks for the feedback!

Posted by: Gabriel Leopardi Feb 14 2018, 03:42 PM

Hi George! Well done! Be sure that this is a very positive move. smile.gif

Posted by: George Hlio Feb 16 2018, 09:23 PM

Thanks Gab!
I got a new REC! Can't wait for yor feedback!
If you'd like leave it at the REC zone!
Thanks

Posted by: Gabriel Leopardi Feb 18 2018, 03:36 PM

Done! smile.gif

Posted by: George Hlio Feb 19 2018, 03:51 AM

Thanks for the feedback Gab!
Actually I check my guitar tuning every time before I REC and it was in tune according to my tuner...So I don't know what it was...Maybe it was the pressure to the strings...I'll work and reREC it next week!
As for the tone, what would you suggest me to do? Maybe add the TubeScreamer overdrive plugin to add more attack?
The chain that I used in REAPER is
focusrite audio interface input gain 25%->LeXtac (blue channel, gain 70%,pre EQ brighter, middle 40% contour 100% and boost ON
What would you suggest me to change?

P.S. I do not know how to work an equalizer for REAPER

Thanks

Posted by: Gabriel Leopardi Feb 19 2018, 04:53 PM

Hi George, let's work on your tone here.

Is it possible for you to share a wav files of your only guitar take processed, and also a files with your guitar without any amp or process?

Posted by: George Hlio Feb 19 2018, 06:42 PM

No problem, but how do I do that? Do I simply render a file with unprocessed guitar and another one with VST processed guitar and upload it?
Sorry if these are silly questions but I am very new to recording...

Posted by: George Hlio Feb 20 2018, 02:56 PM

If I can understand I made a rar file below with two files included: the 1st is the guitar without any effects and the second has the chain of TSE-Lextac-Kefir(catharsis s-preshigh)
[attachment=47173:guitar1.rar]

Posted by: Gabriel Leopardi Feb 21 2018, 05:47 PM

Great! If possible please share a print screen of the processes that you've added to your guitar tone.

Leave your feedback there!!!
Thanks!!!!

Posted by: Gabriel Leopardi Feb 22 2018, 05:59 PM

Hi mate, I've been experimenting with your guitar tone and it's not bad what you've got. I think that some little adjustments could improve it but the main problem that your REC take had must be related to your video rendering settings or maybe the final mix that you get from your Reaper project.

If you check your video, you'll notice that the quality of your guitar tone is much worse than the files that you've sent me. It seems that your guitar is being cancelled or something.

At this point I would like to ask you to send me your "guitar processed + backing track mix" that you get from your Reaper project. Is it possible?

Posted by: George Hlio Feb 22 2018, 06:22 PM

Sure here is the final mix
After I record the guitars with the backing track I simply choose render file without doing anything else and the file that I uploaded below is the result
[attachment=47180:basic_ro...le_track.rar]

Then I choose the video from windows movie maker, I shut down the video volume and I blend them only with the music volume. That is simply what I do...

Posted by: George Hlio Feb 23 2018, 02:22 PM

Thanks for the feedback Gab! I understand your points!
What about the tone in the last file that I uploaded?
Also in the last REC (beginner sweep picking) I raised the music volume when mixing with the video...

It sounds much better! I think that the problem with the other lesson was the audio quality of your video. Now the problem is solved.

Alright then!!! Thanks!
I have a question about the collab: I downloaded the provided backing track and it alredy has a solo after the first minute...
What should I do? Should I play and write a lead for the other sections?

Beginner Legato + Bending + Vibrato
After I finiish those lessons(and of course I'll give them a REC each), is it OK to move forward to Level 3 lessons?

Hi George!

Yes, you can try with some level 3 lessons after these ones. However, the level depends also on each guitarist's skills so you can find level 2 lessons that are trickier for you than level 3 ones.

Sure Gab! I agree! My ULTIMATE GOAL is to become a really good metal rhythm guitar player (in the style of bands like Lamb of God and Periphery and unearth) and I hope that I can SHRED to a basic soloing level in let's say 5 years from now...
So anything that you'd like to add as far as my goals are concerned please do!
Thank you for all the help so far and the time you dedicate for me to become a better guitar player!

P.S. I am working on the PJ collab too...and my question is: the appropriate backing track for the final take is the PJ no guitars, right?

I put a lot of work and I have 3 new RECs! (one is the retake!)
Can't wait for your feedback!!
Leave it there! Thanks!!!

Thanks for the great feedback Gab!
I will continue working on some lead guitar basics like bending and vibrato for sure...As for the tuning issue I haven't noticed anything but maybe during the bends in Beg.Soloing 2 the G or B string went slightly out of tune, so when I recorded the vibrato lesson the problem remained...
As for the rhythm I will start focusing more on dynamics! Do you think that I can proceed to Level 3 metal RHYTHM takes, while continueing to work on some Level 2 LEAD concepts?

Also I am working on the collab but I don't have a final take yet! I'll upload a demo one to tell me if you like the main ideas so that then I can finally record it and have a video too! Don't let me out of this one please! smile.gif

Hey Gab! FINALLY here is my PJ take on the collab! It has some mistakes here and there but it was 6 minutes long and I was tired of recording it too many times! If you need a part for retake just ask me! Some parts were improvised but most parts were not random... I hope you like it

Posted by: Gabriel Leopardi Mar 12 2018, 01:51 AM

Hi George! Great job!! Thanks for taking the time to recording such a long solo for this collab. In the end I create a song taking parts from each guitarist that provides solo so the small issues aren't a problem.

However, I have to say that I think that this is a great exercise for you. I can notice how you took some ideas and make them evolve over the backing track. Your ideas are very musical, with cool grooves, and varied elements. This is a very creative input mate and I think that you should keep on doing these type of composition / improvisation to develope your own style / voice. What do you think?

Posted by: George Hlio Mar 12 2018, 09:37 PM

It really means very much to me to hear positive things from you Gab about my collab take!
I think that this is very important and with every lesson that I play I am trying to create a short melody or a riff based on it, but you know with modifications smile.gif
Simultaneously as you have probably noticed I am doing Todd's Quick Licks and Bootcamp lessons, that provide me with some really nice chops and develop my technique as well!

P.S. I am really enthusiastic because I am just 1 month in GMC and I am feeling better than ever! Now I can't even believe how could I not touch my guitar for almost 2 years...

So Gab, what would you further suggest me do to develop my style as you said?

Posted by: Gabriel Leopardi Mar 14 2018, 04:08 AM

That's great George. I can see how you are doing a killer job at GMC, and this is just the beginning!

Regarding your question, please get into this lesson: https://www.guitarmasterclass.net/ls/Your-First-Phrases/

I love Kris's approach to phrasing in that lesson and it's a good first step to develop your own voice on guitar.

Get into it and let me know your thoughts.

Posted by: George Hlio Mar 15 2018, 12:09 AM

Thanks for your kind words!!! I am trying to give my best! I am currently on vacation Gab so when I come back for sure I'll check it out and tell you my thoughts!
However I have to tell you th tsomething unexpected happened and made me very happy!
So a friend of mine watched some of my GMC videos and since he is a metalhead too he suggested me to play with him live one song.
His guitar teacher organises the show, which will consist of most of his guitar students! But he doesn't have a lot of wanna be metal players and so my friend suggested that I could play with them live one amazing song: Metallica's Orion!
The live is scheduled for early May!
What are your thoughts Gab?
Do you think that I can tackle the rhythm parts and play the whole song live for the first time ever? (I haven't played live before)
Your opinion is important for me friend smile.gif

Gab in your FFDP lesson the backing track and tab is different than the performance. In part 3 out of 6 from yor lesson the part with the 1-1-0-1-1-0 is played in the backing track and is dictated in the tab as reverse gallop, whereas in your performance you play it with straight 16th notes ( which I like better btw!!! smile.gif ). Can I follow the performance playthrough?
Thanks

Posted by: George Hlio Mar 30 2018, 09:32 PM

Gab there are 2 new RECs on the zone so leave your feedback there when you have time! I can't wait!!!

P.S. I played the part of the FFDP as your performance! It rocks!!

Posted by: George Hlio Apr 8 2018, 10:07 PM

Hey Gab! Hope you are doing fine!
I just uploaded a video for Todd's quick licks series and just wanted your thoughts because I improvised on the backing track and tried to create melodic lines limiting myself only to one box of the A minor!

So what do you think?

Posted by: Gabriel Leopardi Apr 9 2018, 07:43 AM

Hi George! Grea to see you working on your improvisation skills. At this point it's important to get familiar with the sound of the scale and how the different notes sound over each chord. These are some tips and comments:

- Try to create more consistent melodies. A good way to do it is singing a melody first and then play it in your guitar. The goal is to play melodies that you hear in your mind and not what the fingers decide.

- Start with short phrases and use the call and response concept.

- Target chord tones when starting and ending a phrase.

- Incoporate Pentatonic and arpeggios.

- Improve your bending. Dedicate some time to get used to the different bending possibilities using this scale.

Thanks Gab smile.gif
I'll focus on all the aspects that you pointed out! I am also working on a beginner bending lesson... I have noticed that my strings which are 10s give me some hard time when bending...What can I do? Should I drop to 9s?
Also what are chord tones? Should I approach a scale with chords in mind?

Hi George. Regarding bending, it's not necesarry to change strings gauge, you'll get use to them. This is a good exercise:

Regarding chord tones, these are the notes from the chord that is sounding, in other words it's the arpeggio of the chord. At first, I recommend you to identify the chord tones of the root chord which is the chord built from the root of the scale. These are the strong notes from the scale. Play the scale visualizing and targeting the root chord at first. Honestly, I think that it's better to work over a one chord vamp backing, and then add other chords but you can use that backing if you want, but know that you are not following the chord at this point, so some notes don't sound like a good choice, for example the last note of the improvisation which is not a note from the chord sounding so the results is not pleasing. This is not an easy thing to do, it can take years to master this technique, but it's the way to go for good improvisers.

Gab I am very busy at work lately but I will have some new RECs soon! Hope you are doing fine! I did focus on bending and alternate picking and I will have the respective lessons ready soon! Stay tuned!

Gab!!!!! Thank you so much for your amazing feedback my friend!!!! I will focus on bending and groove/dynamics as my weak part!!!!
1) An idea that I have is on the next rhythm lesson, before the final REC take I can upload here a video with a riff or a small part and you could tell me how to fix the dynamics!!!
2) As for alternate picking and sweeping, do you think that I can start tackling Level 4 related lessons (that would be so amazing, since it would show real progress smile.gif ) ?

What do you think?

Posted by: Gabriel Leopardi May 2 2018, 03:22 PM

Hi George,

I'm proud of your hard work mate. It's ok to go for level 4 lessons based on AP and SP¨. Regarding dynamics, sure! Let's try your idea.

Thanks Gab! It is great to hear from you that I am improving! I'll be away for 2 weeks for work, so I won't be playing guitar unfortunately!
I have 2 questions though:
1) Todd told me about a funk collab you are organising. What is it? Can I take part in it?
2) What about the Pearl Jam Collab? Will it be ready anytime soon?

Yeah, you are invited to these new collabs that work different than the previous ones.

Please check out the explanations there and record your phrases for both! smile.gif

Posted by: George Hlio May 29 2018, 05:18 PM

Gab, thanks for your good words! Actually I thought and used the following:
1st box of B minor pentatonic
B minor in general... I tried to stick at basics....
For the more complex parts, I did a random quick scale run, which actually sounded good to my ears

10--9--7----
10--9--7----
10--9--7----
11--9--7--9--11

And the other neoclassical sounding part was inspired by the Darius' AP #3 lesson which is basically neoclassical sounding.
---------------------------
12-11-12-10-12-9-12---12---
--------------------9----11
---------------------------

About this part I didn't preety much bothered about the notes so I thought: "I must start and end at right notes and the rest is chromaticism"
The finishing minor melodie, I ''heard'' it in my head and played it if that makes sense!
I know it sounds random and of course I would like your help...

1) What am I actually playing in those ''faster'' parts?
2) Any suggestions?
3) I have bookmarked Kristofer lesson that you have pointed me to a while ago, but I did not have the chance to really dig it. Should I start there?

Posted by: Gabriel Leopardi May 30 2018, 09:19 PM

Hi George, nice to know more details about what you've played at the collab.

I'm not sure about what you mean with your questions. Are you talking about the last chromatic lick that you've used?

The concept behind chromatic scale is that you can take any scale that you know and play all the notes in between the scale tones, if you target the notes from a chord when starting and ending a phrase. There are different tricks and approaches to this, but the best thing that I can recommend is to experiment, over chords and backing tracks and take your own conclusions on this topic.

This lesson is very advanced, but you can learn those licks at your own tempo as an example of what you can do combining pentatonics and modes with chromatic scales.

Posted by: George Hlio May 31 2018, 08:27 AM

Very cool lesson! Yes it is an interesting idea the chromaticism... A while ago for the PJ collab I aked you about improvistation and you pointed me at Kris lesson https://www.guitarmasterclass.net/ls/Your-First-Phrases/
Should I start with this one?

Also, Gab thank you very much for your feedback on my 1st Level 4 lesson! I will isolate the fast part and upload a video here of only this part so that you can give me advice! What do you say?

Yes, that lesson is an excellent complement for your improvisation work. Kris's approach is very creative so I recommend this one as well as his Jam School series.

Hey George!! Thanks for your nice words for my birthday! You made my day! smile.gif

Congrats on your take for Funk collab. Your playing is tasty on this one, I like it! How do you feel it? Do you like it? Are you comfortable with this rhythm?

Posted by: George Hlio Jun 22 2018, 12:32 PM

I am flattered by your kind words Gab!!! I am so excited about this collab! You know METAL is my favourite genre but I like anything that sounds good with guitar in it! The difference is that in this collab I felt a lot more confident! I followed the following strategies while creating the solo:
1) Tried to use notes from G dorian+ G aeolian and mix them up
2) I used chromaticism and staccato in a way that sounds good, following Kris' advice on his relevant lesson
3) I wanted a fast phrase, so I played this tapping lick which sounds shreddy and far more difficult than it actually is...Of course it didn't sound perfect but I am happy in the context that 3 months ago I wouldn't believe that I could play this way!
Unfortunately I played two crappy bends and I didn't have time for a retake, but anyway...next time I'll be more careful
4) Also what helped me a lot was your advice to create melodies in my head and try to recreate them! It takes some time to figure out the phrases but it is worth it!

How do you find my approach?

P.S. I am also preparing my take on the fusing the genres collab! It should be ready at about the 30th (deadline date)

Posted by: Gabriel Leopardi Jun 22 2018, 04:58 PM

Hi George! Your approach is fantastic. You applied many different ideas and that's why the final result is very creative and works great over the backing track. I think that it's a good idea to do the same thing over the other collab and see what happens.

Please keep me updated.

Hey George! There is no problem! I didn't set a deadline yet because I want to have many participants. The idea is to record a quick jam over the backing.

Hi George! Thanks for linking your previous take. It always helps me to give a more precise feedback.

The whole lesson sounds much more precise now. The slower parts, which were ok, are perfect now. The faster had sync and timing issues and now I just can note very small timing issues, but nothing very dramatic. The new take is a lot better than the previous one shared. It's a 8/9 at REC for me.

Hi George! Yes! It's ok to go for that Judas lesson and give the AP lesson a rest if you are tired of it.

In order to keep your Alternate picking technique in shape, maybe you could dedicate 5/10 minutes to any repetitive technique exercise. I suggest one of these: https://www.guitarmasterclass.net/guitar_forum/index.php?showtopic=42831

Posted by: Gabriel Leopardi Apr 6 2020, 05:19 PM

Hi George!

The first thing that you can try is to check if your cable is not giving noise issues. If that's not the case, you can add a gate after or before your amp sim. This is a tutorial for reaper:

I don't know what should I choose.
As you know I have a 7-string Schechter and I am very happy with it, as far as rhythm is concerned! But for soloing it has a really thin neck and it is not ideal. l would buy a & string again to tell the truth, but I am not sure! Which of those options are good?

Hi George! What's your budget?

Do you like Strat type? Super Strat? Les Paul?

Posted by: George Hlio Apr 7 2020, 10:21 PM

Well I would like mostly standard type (Strat I guess), I want a guitar to focus on metalcore, djent, extreme metal, you know the kind of staff that I like.
My budget is anywhere between 500-1000 euros(similar to dollars), I am probably going to get it on installments.
From what was available I leaned more towards Ibanez, Solar, Schechter (that I already have) you know metal stuff...But I am open to suggestions. Also the site above is the only that ships to Greece without extra costs, so anything from there would be nice.
So what do you think?

From what was available I leaned more towards Ibanez, Solar, Schechter (that I already have) you know metal stuff...But I am open to suggestions. Also the site above is the only that ships to Greece without extra costs, so anything from there would be nice.
So what do you think?

I've asked Kris about his Solar guitar and he told me good things about it based on the price/quality relation. For those genres, I think that going for any Solar model could be a good move!

Thanks for the feedback Gab! I will work your lesson at a slower tempo, because it is downpicking stamina that I am lacking! Yes Metallica are awesome at downpicking!!!
Also, I had one more REC ready so I gave it a shot: https://www.guitarmasterclass.net/guitar_forum/index.php?showtopic=60940&hl=
When you have time, give it a listen! Thanks Gab!

Let me know if you have any question!!

Gab, I am practicing your Judas Priest lesson at a slower pace and I am feeling better with its speed that made me uncomfortable.
I took your advice and practiced more on timing and I got a new REC on the zone. I also used significantly less Gain!
Let me know what you think!
Thanks

That sounds good mate! I'll check and comment your new take at REC.
