Mar 3 2018, 11:55 PM	GMC:er Posts: 25.297 Joined: 23-December 09 From: Atlanta, Georgia, USA	QUICK LICKS #17 (Alternate Picking with Traverse ) INTRO: In our previous Quick licks ( #16 ) we combined a scale inversion with a back and forth pattern to make a new lick out of the combination of the two. This makes for a very complex lick which may seem daunting. Let's scale it back a bit and use a more simple pattern that avoid some of the complexity in favor of a smoother sounding lick. This is done in the key of A but can be transposed to any key by simply moving the pattern anywhere on the neck that you need it to be. Try to use your Pinky on this one as the pinky always needs a bit more work than it usually gets Your finger may want to use the first three fingers but try to avoid that if at all possible. REMEMBER, no points for speed, so just focus on playing it in a precise manner. Palm mute every single note and pick every note. Makes a great addition to your lick library and works well with a metronome for building precision/speed while traversing strings and alternate picking. Here is the tablature. Go over it slowly, note by note. Then play it slowly as well. Don't try to "shred" it right away 17.gp5 ( 1.86K ) Number of downloads: 112 BACKGROUND / COMMENTS This lick makes a GREAT Alternate Picking drill and once you get it down, you can make it in to a great lick. BTW: This is just a starting point, Once you play the lick as written at least once, feel free to modify it and do your own thing with it! Pick more/less, change the distance between fingers, try it at different points on the neck etc. Add this drill to your daily practice routine. Future you will thank you for it GIVE EM HELL! Well done there, that's what I call taking the initiative! The Blood of Sparta still runs thick in the Greek Heart I see. The back and forth parts of this lick can make it really confusing at first and especially when first trying to ramp up the speed, your fingers will fight back and won't want to participate. If we were just going one direction, it would be much easier. Try just going down using the first three strings shape. It's much more simple. It's one you add reversing direction and repeating the pattern on strings that we get in to the tall grass. Despite having only a very short time to learn this lick, you play it perfectly on your first try on camera. I can see you fighting to ramp it up a bit and doing well at it. Keep this lick in your warm up batch of licks. It's a great lick to warm up and get your fingers going. Also, try it on other frets and then take this pattern and try it on the minor scale, major scale etc. As for this one, YOU JUST KRUSHED IT!!!!! and LEVELED UP!!!!! THIS ... IS ... SPARTA!!! I think you may have missed a note toward the end but you more than made up for it by doing multi picking and using the pinky! Pace is good as is muting. Did you get a chance to try that new patch btw? I took all the delay out so you can hear what you are playing without notes getting doubled up over top of each other. Delay is great when recording a solo to go with music, but when doing a drill it can be a bit much as you hear notes that are not being played. Well done on this one, you just.. LEVELED UP!!!!! Jumped in, KRUSHED IT, jumped out. Well done. Technique is on point. Solid Palm Mute, very tight hand synch, and best of all, never overcommitting to any single pick strike which is the key to being able to play licks like this that have tons of string traverse. if you overcommit to any single lick by letting the pick go to deep beyond the plane of the string, you run the risk of getting "hung up" and hitting a speed bump and wrecking your smooth shreddy lick. The good news here is Traverse was PERFECT! In other words, you KILLED IT!!! and LEVELED UP!!!!! It's not meant to be "shredded" it's really about picking every note and playing a complicated sequence while maintaining control. Try not to use any pull offs on this one. I fear you may be trying to push through these so fast that you may be missing the instructions in the instructions section. This is a clip from the intro. "Your fingers may want to use the first three fingers but try to avoid that if at all possible. REMEMBER, no points for speed, so just focus on playing it in a precise manner. Palm mute every single note and pick every note." It's important to read through the entire intro as that sets up the requirements for the lick that have to be met before leveling up and moving on. Sometimes, it's pull offs, some times, (like this one) it's pick every single note. Also, this one requires you to use the pinky instead of moving to the first 3 fingers on the fretting hand. In general, any lick below the 12th fret will typically (unless otherwise noted) require using the pinky. So just slow down a bit. Lets say by about half, and pick every note, keep a good palm mute, and keep it very clean and even. Sometimes, that's more difficult that shredding through. You've got this!! This one is much better and you have a good grip on the Alternate Picking here which is the main point of this lick. The finger pattern is mostly the same on each string to allow folks to focus on alternate picking while traversing strings. Very nicely picked!! I did notice that you left out just a few notes toward the end of the lick but those were just repeat notes. This one is less about a crazy note sequences and more about alt picking and palm muting. You clearly have a good handle on these so you are ready to move on!! You just.. LEVELED UP!!! There are a lot of back and forth bits in this one which is meant to get your hand familiar with mechanics of "back and forth" licks so that you can apply this concept to every scale that you know. Speaking of which, try to do just that! Use the back and forth technique to run around inside of your favorite scale/scales. I love using it on Minor and my fave blues mod which is what this lick is based on. You've got solid picking and fretting going on here so keep this puppy in your bag of tricks!!! You just..
