GMC Forum _ Gabriel Leopardi _ Alex5's Thread

Posted by: Gabriel Leopardi Jul 29 2015, 07:58 PM

Hi Alex! Welcome to your personal thread for Gab's Army, my mentoring program. Here I'll monitor your progress and help you choosing lessons and designing guitar routines to take your guitar playing to a new level.

I'll copy the info you've sent me to have it as reference.

I listen a lot of music : rock, metal, jazz, blues, brazillian music... I have 31, married with children I can't play guitar all day long but I can find a half hour or an hour per day to work my instrument.

My favorites artists are Timo Tolkki (Stratovarius), John 5, BB King, Eric Clapton, AC Jobim

About my guitar playing, I start playing many years ago but not seriously. I have a good level in harmony and music theory (I can analyze a song, I know chord substitution, jazz harmony...) , I know a lot of chords, modes and scales but I can't use it in my guitar playing because of my technical level.

I have basic difficulties and the main is rhythm. I can't feel it. I work with metronome but I don't make progresses. I work hard and forget to have fun.

I like improvisation. I'd like to play metal music, jazzy likes and latin music.

The first task on this thread is to learn and record a video playing my new Muse Goes Stoner lesson.

You didn't tell me if the tone I've chosen match for the lesson. I suppose it did ...

For my timing, I am aware of my problems but I think I have a little latency when I apply a VST on my clean record.
I'll post my clean record so you will can judge it.

But I know my timing is awful, it's not an excuse tongue.gif

Posted by: Gabriel Leopardi Aug 16 2015, 07:10 PM

yes, your tone goes very well with this lesson. Also, your guitar looks great!

Maybe you could join this workout: http://www.guitarmasterclass.net/guitar_forum/index.php?showtopic=54317

Here's a new take.
I think it's a bit better. smile.gif

Posted by: Gabriel Leopardi Aug 24 2015, 04:07 PM

Hi mate, this still has important timing issues.

I recommend you two things:

- Work on each riff individually starting with the main riff, and practice using a slower backing track. Before you start playing the main riff, sing it over the backing, with your eyes closed, putting all your concentration on going tight with the backing. Once you can do it with your voice, try it with your guitar. Only the first riff. Record yourself and share it here.

I'll prepare two backings later. Both have the base for the main/first riff looped. The first one is at normal tempo, the other one is slower. Please practice and record yourself over these ones.

 Muse_First_Riff_Loop_120_bpm.mp3 ( 4.38MB ) : 153

I'll be back with the slower version.

- Give a try to this workout: http://www.guitarmasterclass.net/guitar_forum/index.php?showtopic=54317

Posted by: Alex5 Aug 24 2015, 04:20 PM

I'll continue to work. I'll do what you told me : working each riff

Posted by: Gabriel Leopardi Aug 24 2015, 04:53 PM

Great. Here you have a slower version of the looped backing for the intro riff.

 Muse_First_Riff_Loop_90_bpm.mp3 ( 5.7MB ) : 145

There is a software called Amazing Slow Downer that is great for creating loops and slower versions. Check it out: http://www.ronimusic.com/amsldowin.htm

I've downloaded all your links. Time to work now smile.gif
I've watched your timing workout but I'm not sure understanding what is expected...
Can you explain me ?

Thanks

Posted by: Gabriel Leopardi Aug 25 2015, 07:08 PM

You will find assignments that should be worked in order to polish your timing. You can start with the number 1, practice it for around 4 days, and share a take there or here to let me check it, give feedback and tell you if you are ready for the next one. It's a workout.

Does it make sense?

Posted by: Alex5 Aug 25 2015, 09:05 PM

It's very clear

Posted by: Gabriel Leopardi Aug 26 2015, 06:31 PM

waiting for your feedback.

If I do timing mistakes can you tell me what is it ?

Posted by: Gabriel Leopardi Aug 28 2015, 08:03 PM

Hi mate, thanks for the audios. These samples show that you need some hard work on timing. The first audio from Muse is not tight, and you can notice by comparing what you play with the bass guitar. You are not going unison in the whole first part. However, the last seconds sound much better than the first ones, so it seems that you get more comfortable close to the end. This means that you can play it, but you are not understanding it yet. You need to hear more, even without playing, sing along with the backing, and close your eyes, feel the groove.

Something similar happens with the timing workout, the first part until the "chorus" is not going even with the beat, but the last seconds go tight. Please listen to your recording and let me know if you note what I'm saying.

Posted by: Alex5 Aug 28 2015, 09:43 PM

I note your feedback...
I've a lot of difficulty to feel the groove, so in my guitar playing I use too much my brain instead of feel the groove. I get 80% of my attention to think instead of playing.

I know that, timing is my priority. I will work hard to succeed

Posted by: Alex5 Aug 28 2015, 10:33 PM

I have a difficulty with the ACDC BT. At the begining, there is a 1 2 3 4 without guitar then, the guitar play. Is the guitar playing at 1 (2nd bar) or 4 and half (1st bar) ?

Posted by: Gabriel Leopardi Aug 29 2015, 01:56 PM

No, it's not, it's playing a bit before the beat (one 8th note), that's what makes everything a bit more difficult. You need to mark the beat by yourself with your foot. Are you tapping with your foot while playing?

Posted by: Alex5 Aug 29 2015, 05:39 PM

I do but I have difficulties staying regular. It's easier for me to do et with a métronome. Over a BT my ear ils distracted ans I lose the béat.

Hi Alex!! Congrats on your work! Your timing is improving so you are on the right with this practice! smile.gif

The timing assignment sounds good so you could start with the number 2. Muse's looped riff is getting better but it needs more work yet, as well as the complete take. Please keep on working on this during this new week.

When practicing Muse's riff, try to avoid notes from the riff being muted too soon to make the riff sound smoother. Try to make the silences between notes much shorter.

Keep on rocking!

Posted by: Alex5 Aug 31 2015, 01:14 AM

Thanks for your feedback. For my timing progresses, there ils another reason I have discover that my device wasn't configurated correctly on reaper. So i've set the asio4all plugins and m'y timing becomes better immediatly .
I can work in the best conditions now.

Posted by: Gabriel Leopardi Aug 31 2015, 06:12 PM

Ah! That's great! So you were having "latency" issues. It's impossible to play tight when this happens. Great to know that you've discovered this and solved! Has it disappeared?

Posted by: Alex5 Aug 31 2015, 07:26 PM

Completly disappeared smile.gif

I knew my timing couldn't be awful at it's point biggrin.gif

Seriously, before this set up I was disappointed each time I listened my records.
Now, I know my playing isn't awesome but when I listen my record I ear what I have feeled during the recording...

Sorry, my ideas could be not very clear but I've difficulties to speak well english..

Posted by: Gabriel Leopardi Sep 1 2015, 04:08 AM

It's totally clear, don't worry. wink.gif

So well, these are really good news! I was a bit worried about your timing mate... smile.gif

Posted by: Alex5 Sep 2 2015, 09:48 AM

Here's a new take on video

Posted by: Gabriel Leopardi Sep 2 2015, 06:37 PM

Hi Alex!! Great to find this video. This is a lot much better! Your timing is close to be totally tight. The main riff still shows some room to go tighter with the drum and bass backing, you're close but if you pay special attention you'll notice that it's not totally regular. Tapping with your foot while playing can help to adjust this issue.

Another thing that you could improve on this one is dynamics. You are playing every note with the same intensity, while the lesson requires some dynamics works, mostly accentuating the parts of the riff that go with the beat. Pay attention to my left hand work on main video and you'll see what I mean.

Congrats on the good job!

Posted by: Alex5 Sep 2 2015, 10:21 PM

I have watched again your vidéo and I see what you mean.
I'll work on dynamics !

Posted by: Gabriel Leopardi Sep 3 2015, 02:33 PM

Perfect! wink.gif

Posted by: Alex5 Sep 6 2015, 10:26 PM

Here's and new take. I think it's more dynamic, isn't it ?

Posted by: Gabriel Leopardi Sep 7 2015, 05:02 AM

Hi Alex,

I can note that your playing starts to have more dynamics but it's not natural and connected with the backing yet. You need to continue practicing this lesson. I also note that the main riff is not sounding tight yet, you also need to continue focusing on timing. The problem is much smaller than the first videos but you still need to adjust it.

Maybe using the loop that I've sent can help with both dynamics and timing.

Do you note the timing issues on this video?

Posted by: Alex5 Sep 7 2015, 08:27 AM

Hey !

I list en the timing issues. I was tired on this take and focused on dynamic. And my wife was coming to bawl at me because Idisconforted her movie watching tapping the tempo with my foot. biggrin.gif biggrin.gif I knew it wasn't the take of the year biggrin.gif.
My playing dont look natural yet I need a lot of concentration to play.

I 'LL do another take in better conditions.

QUOTE

I use it to work !

I'd like to have your opinion about 2 points :

First, I feel more comfortable using classical position to play guitar. I force myself using folk position to do records but I'm not feeling as well as classical.
Is classical possition good to play electric guitar ? My takes are better when I use it.

Secondly, at the moment, I focus myself working the lesson Muse goes stoner, and timing workout assignements. I'm asking myself working another lesson as the same time to avoid being bored by it. What are you thinking about that ? Do you have a lesson to advice me ?

Here's a new take correcting some timing issues

Posted by: Gabriel Leopardi Sep 7 2015, 03:12 PM

Hi Alex,

Your timing is a bit better on this new video so you are on the right track with your practice. About the posture, the classical position is really comfortable and effective for playing guitar, the main difference is how it looks. It looks more "formal" and less "cool" for playing rock. This can be a very personal opinion, but when I see a rock player using this position I see him as a player more focused on technique than feeling. But once again, this is a VERY subjective opinion. If this is not a problem or anything that matters to you, you can go for it.

About starting with a new lesson, yes! it's a great idea. What about this one?

http://www.guitarmasterclass.net/ls/BB-King-Blues/

Posted by: Alex5 Sep 7 2015, 04:18 PM

I dont care looking less cool if I can sounding more good. So i'll keep classical posture for the moment. Nice lesson you suggest to me. I have already bookmarked it. Great challenge, looking a bit difficult at first view. I'll work on it and finish the Muse one.

Keep rockin'

Posted by: Gabriel Leopardi Sep 9 2015, 02:57 PM

Hi Alex, the lesson still has timing issues. You are having problems with this rhythm pattern:

 pattern.gp5 ( 1.6K ) : 93

This patterns appears all the time in the lesson and you are not playing it tight so it would be a good idea to hear you practicing the pattern over a drum loop or metronome, playing the same note but totally focused on playing it tight.

Please do it for 3 days, 3 blocks of 10 minutes, and share a video.

Posted by: Gabriel Leopardi Sep 16 2015, 01:59 PM

Hi Alex! Good job! This lesson keeps on polishing! The timing is getting better with each new take. There are two elements to focus:

- Dynamics
- Articulation

About dynamics, I feel that you keep on playing everything soft, while this kind of riffing requires a more aggressive picking and also to accentuate the stronger parts of the beat. Listen to the original lesson and pay attention to intensities.

Regarding articulation, I still think that your picking tends to sound with staccato effect and this avoid the riff sound smooth enough. Try to make the notes longer to avoid silence between them and to make the riff sound smoother.

PS: The reason why I think you have the articulation issue is that you quit the fingers too early... check if this is the problem.

Posted by: Alex5 Sep 17 2015, 02:44 PM

I'm not very proud of this one, I had my hand shaking because of cafein abuse.
I try to play less staccato, it's not enough but a bit better I think.

Posted by: Gabriel Leopardi Sep 18 2015, 01:01 PM

Hi Alex, good job! Your timing and articulation are better on this one. I think that you are also muting a bit the sixth string with the palm of your right hand and that's why some notes still sound with staccato. This details combined to the previous I've marked are affecting the smoothness of your take. Keep on practicing.

Posted by: Alex5 Sep 18 2015, 01:55 PM

.

Posted by: Alex5 Sep 18 2015, 10:26 PM

I've change the TS overdrive of my previous preset for a fuzz.

Posted by: Gabriel Leopardi Sep 19 2015, 04:25 PM

Hi Alex! Great job!! This take shows important improvements!! Both timing and articulation are much better!

The next goal is more dynamic playing. Check our your right hand, you are playing really soft, check the original lesson and emulate a bit how my right hand hits the strings to get different intensities. Following the groove with your head and body will also give more feeling to your playing. You can play this one now it's time to stop thinking and start to feel it. smile.gif

Posted by: Alex5 Sep 20 2015, 08:39 AM

I need your advices. I've the habit to keep my little finger fixed upon the pickguard. Does it harm to my dynamic ? I do that to have more stability. It is a bad habit ?

Posted by: Alex5 Sep 21 2015, 01:36 PM

Hey ! Here a take I want to submit to REC zone. What do you think ?

Posted by: Gabriel Leopardi Sep 21 2015, 01:53 PM

Hi mate, about your finger question. It's not a problem, it's frequently used like that as an anchor point when picking precision is required. If you focus your right movement on your wrist, you won't have problems with this.

About the take, I think that dynamics are better, but some old problems are appearing here and there (timing and articulation). At this stage is difficult to think on everything at the same time so you just need to keep on practicing to make the things more natural.

You can share it at REC to receive other instructors opinions, feel free to do it.

Sure! As it's time to make the things become more natural, you are ready to start focusing on a new lesson and keep playing this one for 5/10 minutes every day to keep making the different elements familiar.

Do you have any new lesson in mind?

Hi Alex! Congrats on your hard work!

Your timing is slowly getting better. You only need to be patient and continue focusing on this element which is one of the most important and you still have room to adjust it. This two lessons are perfect for this, as well as the other assignments from the timing workout.

Muse goes stoner lesson is sounding good but you should focus on the main pattern which is again not precise. I'm talking about the rhythm pattern covered here: http://www.guitarmasterclass.net/guitar_forum/index.php?showtopic=54317&view=findpost&p=718600. Please dedicate some time to work on that assignment every day.

The second lesson is also very close, just keep on practicing to go even with every note.

Here's a take for the rythme figure workout. I miss one note...
I've found a new way to work. Very efficient for me !

So here's a take for the Muse lesson too

I think it's good ! No ?

Posted by: Gabriel Leopardi Oct 7 2015, 01:32 PM

Awesome!!! Both takes are much better than the previous ones and show very impressing progress comparing your playing 2 months ago. I have to say that I've showed your progress to a private student here as an example of how hard work pays! I invite you to check again your previous takes to notice how much your playing has improved in only two months!!

There is still very little work to do to make this sound groovier and tighter but the progress is awesome. Keep on rocking.

Hey !
I've just uploaded my takes... so I post it here.

Muse goes stoner :

Timing workout :
Not very fun, but useful to improve timing.
First, I advice you to put your volume higher, I don't know the shit I've done but it's veeeeeeeeeeery quiet.
Anyway... I think I should submit this one to the workshop, what do you think about that ? Of course, with a best mix...

Posted by: Gabriel Leopardi Oct 8 2015, 04:01 PM

Hi Alex, good update.

These two takes are close to the previous that I've heard and it's natural, there is only 1 day of difference. Keep on practicing with the previous comments in mind, you playing will continue being polished.

About sharing the lesson at REC, it's always helpful to do it! wink.gif

Posted by: Alex5 Oct 8 2015, 04:07 PM

Of course et close that I posted yesterday smile.gif I used to make a record after each pratice session to watch my progresses and being more confortable to record.

Posted by: Gabriel Leopardi Oct 9 2015, 01:45 PM

Hi Alex, it's a good idea. Keep doing it!

Posted by: Alex5 Oct 11 2015, 09:34 PM

Hey,

I've taken this 2 takes this evening.

I like them !

I've changed my tone for the Muse one, thinking it fits good too.

Rythme Figures Workout

Muse goes stoner

Posted by: Gabriel Leopardi Oct 12 2015, 04:29 PM

Hi Alex! The lessons are naturally evolving thanks to your hard work. I like the new tone for the Muse lesson, it helps to make your playing sound smoother along the whole take.

There is nothing else to add to my previous comments, just keep on the hard work!

Posted by: Alex5 Oct 15 2015, 09:08 PM

Hi Gab,

About Muse goes stoner.

I 've isolated the sequences that give me problems to work on them.
It was the slide \8 6 in the main riff and the chromatic passage on the palm muted riff.

I can play well them. Now I must take a rest to assimilate them. I tried to make a REC tonight, it was a disaster. Too early, need to wait a few time.

Maybe tomorrow will be a groovier day smile.gif

About my tone, I've refined the last one. It's good !

About Rythme Figure Workout :

I think it's ready. I'll take a REC tomorrow.

Also, I need an advice. Which effect using to get my sound thicker ?

Edit :

here's a take

I need to refine the palm mute..

Posted by: Gabriel Leopardi Oct 16 2015, 02:25 PM

Hi Alex! Good job!

I like how your tone gets polished from take to take. Your playing is also progressing from take to take so you are on the right track! Please remember to focus a bit more on dynamics when playing riffs.

About thickening your tone, I use an emulated Fuzz pedal to get this kind of Stoner sound, have your tried it?

Posted by: Alex5 Oct 16 2015, 02:28 PM

At this time I use a screamer type overdrive. I will try with a fuzz

Ok, maybe you'll get what you are looking for with this one.

Posted by: Alex5 Oct 18 2015, 01:50 PM

Hey, I've done a new take.
I tried with fuzz but it isn't sounded like I want. I'm totally beginner with effects so, I stay with my screamer overdrive at the moment which sound great for me.

I've done my best,

(as you can see, my wife has make order in my office tongue.gif biggrin.gif )

Good take man! Your timing is really good on this one! I'd like to see you focusing more on dynamics as we discussed previously.

Keep on rocking.

Hey Gab,

I take a look on a lesson with brace notes. I'm not sure understanding how to play them and what it it exactly. They are visible on the tab and music sheet but I Don't see the instructor playing them. It's the http://www.guitarmasterclass.net/solo-guitar/jazz-swing-lead-lesson/.

Can you explain me ?

Here's a listing of the lessons I work on :
- jazz swing lead
- bossa nova rythme
- rythme figure workout (ended soon)
- Manowar for beginners
- metal power chords

A versatile list.. smile.gif

Posted by: Gabriel Leopardi Oct 20 2015, 02:06 PM

Hi Alex, if you check the first slow video you'll see that Muris starts with a fast slide from fret 5th to 6th on the thirds string. The first note is what is called a brace note and it means that you play a note very close to the next one. It's an embellishment that can be added to make your lines more interesting and this way of writing it is to make it easier to read and also write it. The "book" definition is:

"A brace is a vertical bow-shaped bracket connecting two or more musical staves. Staves within a brace are played simultaneously by one performer."

In reality, you won't play both note simultaneously but you'll do it the closer possible to give a simultaneous effect. It can be tricky to explain it with words but please check the main video and identify how it sounds.

Posted by: Alex5 Oct 20 2015, 02:20 PM

Good ! By instinct I played it like that.

Hey Gab,

I've made a take of the 6 first bars of Jazz swing lead. Can you tell me for the brace notes ? Are they good?
(I haven't work my tone)

Posted by: Gabriel Leopardi Oct 22 2015, 04:46 PM

Hi Alex, yes, the brace notes are being played correctly. Try to make them sound more defined as it happens in the original lesson, but you are on the right track. Well done.

Posted by: Alex5 Oct 24 2015, 09:20 PM

Hi Gab,

Step by step I progress on the Jazz swing lead lesson. Still working on the timing. I add one or two bars per day. Miss me 7 bars to go.
After I 'll start polishing.

Posted by: Gabriel Leopardi Oct 25 2015, 08:02 PM

Great! Thanks for the update. Keep going! wink.gif

Posted by: Alex5 Oct 29 2015, 02:13 PM

Hey Gab,

Here's a first take of the Jazz Swing Lead Lesson.
There's so much mistakes to fix, I know it. But I think, it's a "not bad" take and a good way to start.

I have also a Cort Joe Beck guitar which could match better, but I love so much my Telecaster !
The tone I have chosen is very basic. I 'll work on it too.

Posted by: Gabriel Leopardi Oct 29 2015, 02:43 PM

Hi Alex!

Yeah! I also think that this is a good first take and it will be our reference to follow your progress as it happened with Muse's lesson.

The licks are learnt but now you have to put your focus on polishing each of them, starting with timing and then adding other elements like vibrato and dynamics. Working on tone is also a good plan, so you are on the right track, just keep the good job!

Posted by: Alex5 Nov 3 2015, 06:28 PM

Here's a new take.
I cannot note big improvement but it sounds a bit better.

Can you tell me the first thing I should work to improve it ?

Posted by: Gabriel Leopardi Nov 4 2015, 02:04 PM

Hi Alex, the first two things that you should improve on this one are timing and intensity with your right hand thumb which tends to be weak in some notes and phrases. Play along with the original lesson to fix timing and play over the backing track to fix intensity.

Posted by: Alex5 Nov 12 2015, 10:15 PM

Hi Gab,

I continue my work on the lessons, but I started the Creativity workout and the Improvisation course too.
I like to create tracks but as you have seen I have a problem to make a melody or a lead track.
That's why you advice me to start the improvisation course.

I've watch assignement 1 this afternoon, work the arpeggios, the scale, etc..

Actually, I already know these things, I can find an arpeggio or a scale over the neck. (I have to work to make them natural and fast).
The problem I have, I don't know how to build a melody. Is it exist a method, to do this ? Any tips ?

When I play over the BT, it is like that :
"It's the G major chord.. let's start... F*** the chord has change it's the D major I will play... it still change it's now the C major... The next one will be G... Get ready.." etc... etc...

I spent my time thinking about what I can play.. I have the feeling to run behind the BT, to have one bar late every time.
I am too cerebral and I have work too much the theory instead of working my guitar. (My reading before sleep is http://www.siron.name/livres_PI.html since 1 year. Idon't know if you've ever seen this book and if it is translated in english and spanish. It's about jazz music and improvisation. Over 700 pages of happiness biggrin.gif
So I've a lot of theoric tools but I can't translate them on guitar.

My playing becomes mathematic, with no feeling, no soul. It's very frustrating.
The melodies I've made are boring on my guitar or in my head.

Have you any advice ?

Posted by: Gabriel Leopardi Nov 15 2015, 12:25 AM

Hi Alex, let's work on your melodies.

The improvisation workout is based on learning all the tools that you need to improvise but also to connect your mind with your fret-board. There are different methods to build melodies but one important thing is be able to transpose them from your mind to your guitar smoothly. That's why I consider the improvisation workout assignments essential.

I have one question, are you able to sing melodies over a backing track?

Posted by: Alex5 Nov 15 2015, 09:07 AM

Yes I'm able to sing over a BT. The difficulties i have are to construct the "story" around the melody.
When i sing, there's something instinctive, that i've not with a guitar. I'm not enough self confident with m'y guitar.
So m'y melodies looks like scales exercices.

I spent too much time to think : am I good with the timing ? Should I change the rythme of thé melody?

There's not so much place in m'y head for the music..

Posted by: Gabriel Leopardi Nov 15 2015, 04:08 PM

Well, if you are able to sing melodies, that's a good first step. You should start practicing creating phrases first with your mind and then transposing them to your guitar. This process will be slow at first but with practice you'll be able to do it simultaneously and that's when the improvisation course becomes important, singing along the scales and patterns while you practice them and also doing some ear training are things that will help you on this process.

What I'm trying to say is that this phrasing thing that you want to work isn't something that will be learnt in 1 day, you need to work on different elements that will help you to slowly get better and better on this, does it make sense?

Posted by: Alex5 Nov 15 2015, 09:53 PM

Very clear. So.. let's work.

Hi Alex, how are you?

Unfortunately it's a bit difficult to give specific feedback about your playing because your guitar is quiet in the mix. Please try to set it louder on future videos. I think that the overall is ok, and that timing is the element that could be better but I'm not completely sure.

Posted by: Gabriel Leopardi Nov 18 2015, 01:53 PM

Thanks for the new mix mate! As I suspected on the previous mix, the two elements that have room for improvement here are timing, and dynamics. Please keep on practicing (sometimes over the original lesson) trying to adjust them, ok?

Posted by: Alex5 Nov 18 2015, 03:51 PM

OK. My usual problems.
When you say that i need to improve timing, i read "you're completly out of the tempo".
I suppose it isn't as terrible as i imagine.
Dynamic néed a lot of work to me.
Let's go.

Posted by: Gabriel Leopardi Nov 19 2015, 01:20 PM

No, your timing is not bad, but there is still room to improvements.

Keep the hard work!

I've done the 1st assignement of impro course. Just need to resolve my internet provider problems to upload it. It could take some time..

Here's assignement 1 of impro course (2'26'')
https://soundcloud.com/user-280506716/improgmaj/s-4soSZ

With false notes due to my habit playing other scales, a passage of "Hey you're out of the tempo what are you doing ?" and some passages of "I've nothing to say but I play anymore". smile.gif

My guitar tone isn't the best one...

I made the file private I hop you can listen it.

Posted by: Gabriel Leopardi Nov 20 2015, 01:50 PM

Hi Alex!

I'm glad to see that you are working on the improvisation course! biggrin.gif

This moment is to explore the different elements covered so this audio is totally successful. You've tried to create simple melodies and phrases. There are some moments where you play wrong notes, and some other moments where your rhythm is not going with the backing so pay attention to this details in future recordings.

Before you go to the second assignment I'd like to suggest you doing some voice - guitar connection. The idea is that you sing along with the notes that you play. At first, you'll have to sing a bit (millisecond) after the note sounds, but with practice the idea is that you do it simultaneously.

The second part of the task should be done once you are comfortable with the first one and it's based on singing a phrase, and then playing it. You should be able to do it over the backing... you sing a melody of 4 notes, and then you play the 4 notes....

Practice this for 3 days and let me know how it goes.

Deal?

Hey,

I've made that. Don't sure you'll know it, it's from the Metal Gear Solid OST released on 1998. I like this song.

It sounds good Alex! This kind of works are really helpful, keep working on your own music and arrangement of songs that you like.

Posted by: Alex5 Nov 30 2015, 03:29 PM

Hey, I've made that this afternoon...

I must confess I'm a bit demoralized at the moment, thinking nothing good comes from my playing. I'd like to feel a little improvement.

It's the 1st time I feel that, it's strange.

I try to make a track for the creativity workout.. It's hard , I've a bass line, a drum line.. I could do a rythm guitar.. but I have no idea for lead.. as usual.. very frustrating..

Posted by: Gabriel Leopardi Dec 1 2015, 01:47 PM

You are getting better at guitar! You are connecting more and more with your instrument on each new take. This new one shows improvements but it's not a technical lesson, it's a lesson that should give you inspiration to improvise on this style, so dedicating some time to creating your own variations of the licks should be part of your practice.

I also think that it's time for a new lesson, anything in mind?

Posted by: Alex5 Dec 1 2015, 02:09 PM

Hi,

Thanks for your support.
I'd like to start a level 3 les son to watch if i can do it. I will watch the available lessons...
I have some lesson in my fav. I must watch.. if you have some suggests i could consider them. wink.gif

I'll submit soon a take of this les son (jazz lead) on the workshop.

I found a G maj track that i like. I'll try to improvise over it (autumn leaves)

Posted by: Gabriel Leopardi Dec 1 2015, 03:31 PM

Good idea! Let's use that track to work on improvisation.

Posted by: Alex5 Dec 4 2015, 11:10 AM

Hi,

I post it to the workshop

Posted by: Gabriel Leopardi Dec 4 2015, 02:24 PM

Hi Alex! Your progress on this lesson is really good!

You are starting to have a good control of your timing which is one of the trickier parts of this lesson and it's also the element in which you need to continue focusing while practicing because you are getting close but it's still not consistent / regular. There are some moments where you get the swing feel, while other ones where you play even or rush a bit the beat. Practicing over the original lesson can help.

I don't dislike your tone, it reminds me to surf music, however some more presence would make your guitar sound clearer in the mix.

Ok mate, congrats on your good job, keep going!

Hi,

My next lesson will be Manowar for beginners.

Posted by: Gabriel Leopardi Dec 10 2015, 02:40 PM

Great choice! Let's go for it.

Posted by: Alex5 Dec 13 2015, 02:34 PM

Hey,

Can y ou give me some advices to make a 80' s/ 90's heavy métal sound.
I think start with a Marshall amp simulation (which model ?) And a tube screamer overdrive or a boss ds1 distorsion i'm not sure. What will y ou do?

Posted by: Gabriel Leopardi Dec 14 2015, 02:52 PM

Hi Alex! Yes, a Marshall is a good starting point. I would start with some kind of jcm800 which is my favorite of this brand. Use a 4x12 Marshall cabinet by the way and add a tube screamer for lead guitar. During the 80's reverb and delay was overused so experimenting with some extra effects for creating that ambiance can also help.

Then, experiment with EQ comparing A/B with tones from the bands that you like from those years. Feel free to share here your samples and I will guide you.

Posted by: Alex5 Dec 14 2015, 10:48 PM

I've created a base preset. You'll listen it on my first take. I will shoot it these days.

Ok! I'll wait for it! wink.gif

Posted by: Alex5 Dec 17 2015, 10:27 AM

Hi Gab,

Here's the Take 1 of Manowar for Beginner.

There's still some work. It's hard for me to have a constant palm mute.
I've missed a note in the final solo but it's not the essential at the time (the solo doesn't sound good yet).
I'm not comfortable with the distorsion.
I need your 1st feedback and your opinion about the tone.
Thanks

edit : I wasn't satisfied of my 1st take so I have made a new one this morning.

My comments of this take are the same than the 1st one I ve posted yesterday (I've deleted it).

Posted by: Gabriel Leopardi Dec 18 2015, 01:46 PM

Hi Alex, this lesson needs more time of work. The rhythm part is not bad but has room to sound tighter and more consistent, while the solo is the part that shows more problems regarding timing and other elements like bending and vibrato.

At first I have to say that your guitar has tuning issues on this one and that's the thing that makes everything sound bad on this take. Besides this, I also think that your tone needs some tweak. I would start experimenting with your EQ balance. Here in my monitors your tone lacks presence and treble, so start by lowing bass and mid bass and/or increasing frequencies around 3khz and 5khz and see what happens.

Posted by: Alex5 Dec 19 2015, 06:26 PM

Hi,
I'm aware that this lesson isn't mastered yet.
I've modified my tone.
I will re shoot a take on next week when I'll see improvements.

Here's. tongue.gif biggrin.gif

Posted by: Gabriel Leopardi Jan 8 2016, 01:34 PM

Hi Alex, thanks for the video!

This lesson is on the right track, you can play the whole thing at tempo and clean. Here are some details to adjust:

- Tuning: There are pitches issues mostly when you play power chords with root in 5th string. I'm not sure if this is a tuning issue or if it's related to fingers pressure. Check it out.

- Timing: The feel of the galloping has room to sound tighter. It's not totally regular, please put some attention to it.

- Solo: The solo section could sound more consistent. Practice it over the original lesson and try to emulate bending, vibrato and dynamics of the original.

- Tone: I feel that it is lacking some "body", it's sounding like a metal fuzz which would be good for black metal but not very cool for Manowar style. Experiment with EQ and maybe less distortion.

Posted by: Alex5 Jan 12 2016, 11:35 PM

Thanks Gab, I will check that.

I'm not working lessons a lot at this time (15/20 minutes per day) because I work on side musical projects : improvisation and composition. I'd like to participate on workouts but now, I've not enough time.

Hi,

I've discovered, thanks for the creativity workout, I love to create some music so, I spend a lot of time doing this.
I've created a Bandcamp account to share it
You can follow it
http://laspiralemystique.bandcamp.com

I spent time to create great ambiance sounds and I think the mp3 compression kills the global sound, here, I can share them in Wav format.

I spend time too, on improvisations collaborations in another forum. We created a Chord progression and we play one after one, that's cool.
On the 1st workout we were 11 to play.
If you want to listen it, you can download it
https://www.dropbox.com/s/ewx9o36x4mh2ce2/Mixage_final.mp3?dl=0

I play on 4st position. (at 2'12)
It was a minor blues in Cm. I've created the chord progression using a keyboard and a Rhodes VSTi, another guy (Farine who is here too) has created a rythme guitar.
The guy playing just before me (at 1'45) is Daeron who is here too smile.gif)

I come at the 5st grid.

Of course I continue to work my lessons, I've just less time biggrin.gif

Posted by: Gabriel Leopardi Jan 15 2016, 02:24 PM

Great stuff Alex!! smile.gif

Your new bandcamp is a great idea and I'm proud to know that the creativity workout has awaken this in you! I didn't understand where you can share wav files... here? or at bandcamp?

I've heard the whole improvisation and it's really nice to hear. Everybody is playing tasty phrasing on it. I think that we need a more fusion collab at GMC! Both you and Daeron did a good job. His phrasing has a cool vibe, and a coherent structure. Your solo keeps a similar groove but has more dynamic work. It's like hearing people talking, each has it's own voice. Very nice.

I've done a video. I'm still searching a tone.
My play seems to sound better but it isn't it yet..

I guess I'll be more comfortable playing this standing. I'll try for the next take.

The P.O.V is weird at first sight I use an object to have my leg higher biggrin.gif

Posted by: Gabriel Leopardi Jan 15 2016, 03:26 PM

Hi Alex, that's great! I'll create a bandcamp account, is it free? how many albums does it allow?

About the video, you don't look comfortable with this position, your left arm and hand doesn't look good and I think that this is having impact in what you are playing. The chords sound a bit out of tune, and you have timing issues, even more in the solo section. Please try a more comfortable posture.

I've found my tone for Manowar's lesson. I made a take today but I don't like it. I've made the perfect one previously but my phone has failed the video. I will retake it in few days and submit it to the workshop.

I need to find time for creativity workout. It's hard at this time for me, the building of my house has started and it take me some time.

I work a lot on improvisation I like it !

You can see 2 of them

And Manowar's lesson. smile.gif

Hi Alex, nice to see you jamming!

I can see how you are focusing on melody and creating lines that connect with the chords. This is a great training for your playing and also ear so I recommend to keep on working on it, and start adding different elements to expand your playing and vocabulary:

- Applying expressing techniques. (dynamics, slides, vibrato, bending)
- Using sequences and patterns.
- Learning licks from your favorite players.

Also the work on the new improvisation workout will help!

Thanks for the advices.

I'm looking for an amp. It's fucking hell ! I have 2 on m'y balance. The Hughes and Kettner blue edition 30w (transistor) and the epiphone electar century (18w lamp) I can't choose...

Posted by: Gabriel Leopardi Jan 28 2016, 01:43 PM

Could you go to the music store and try them? This is the only way to be sure which is the best choice for you.

Posted by: Alex5 Feb 8 2016, 03:59 PM

Hi mate,
I've just bought my new amp : a Hughes&Kettner edition tube 20w. I love it. Great clean sounds, powerful, great crunch. Usable at home easyly...
I ll polish Manowar lesson using tips I've had in the workshop to get it pass on my next take. I'll start a new one but i've not choose it yet.

Posted by: Gabriel Leopardi Feb 10 2016, 05:21 PM

Cool! Congrats mate! New gear usually brings motivation and inspiration. Enjoy it!

I'll wait for your new take.

I will continue the Manowar lesson to master the galop.

I'd like to work on these lessons to improve some specific skills. Can I have your opinion about them. It doesn't seems me to difficult for me at first sight but I prefer to have your feelings.

Hi Alex, this is a great selection.

The chord melody lesson is very demanding but it's good to make our fingers do uncommon shapes so it's ok to give it a try. The other ones are perfect for you.

Go for them.

I've taken the Chord melody as main lesson. I love how it sound. The Ben's vibrato and tapping are to improve these skills, I'm not sure making takes for these two on the the workshop.

I've a question about my second take of Manowar's lesson. in your comment, you said I've improved all the issues I pointed. i suppose there's still room to improve them much... Anyway.. You give me the same score than my first take. Is there issues in my second take that aren't here in the first one ?

I ask this without any anger, I just want to understand to make progresses.

Posted by: Gabriel Leopardi Feb 13 2016, 05:05 PM

Hi Alex, I'm not sure if I gave you a 6 or 7. The lesson deserves a 7 but maybe I've confused, REC grades can be a bit imprecise sometimes but it's a good guide to monitor progress and receive feedback from different instructors. The solo sections needs to be polished. Your vibrato and bending is not consistent, there are noises in some notes, and the overall phrasing could sound smoother.

Hi gab,

I start the epic metal rythme lesson and i have a problem with the pinch harmonic on low E string (fret 5). I'm not able to make it sound. Is there a tip for pinch harmonic on low strings ?

Posted by: Gabriel Leopardi Feb 24 2016, 03:21 PM

Hi alex, if you already know the trick to play pinch harmonics (pick angle and using your right hand thumb to get the harmonic), there are no differences regarding the string that you are using. You can try in moving a bit your hand along the string to see if you find the harmonics easily, add more treble and drive (this makes the harmonics easier) and be sure that your strings aren't too old.

This lesson has useful tips: http://www.guitarmasterclass.net/ls/Pinch-Harmonics-Workout/

Posted by: Alex5 Feb 24 2016, 03:44 PM

I'll try again. I've no difficulties to play it on high strings.

So it should be the same thing, just stronger picking.

Posted by: Alex5 Feb 24 2016, 11:20 PM

It works !

This lesson is a bit difficult for me so I work at half tempo for the moment.

Posted by: Gabriel Leopardi Feb 25 2016, 02:29 PM

That's ok! Keep working! wink.gif

Posted by: Alex5 Mar 14 2016, 09:59 PM

Hi,

I work my lessons each day, I've nothing to show you yet.
I can play Epic Metal lesson at 70/75bpm, I up the tempo a bit each day but I can't play it at full speed yet.

I've started too a Darius 's beginner solo lesson I play it at 70bpm and the regular tempo is 120bpm.
I prefer to work it slow and clean to begin.

Is it possible to download slow tempo BT on the lessons ? I can't do it..

Posted by: Gabriel Leopardi Mar 15 2016, 02:50 PM

Hi Alex, tha plan sounds good.

Here you can find a thread about slowing down BT: https://www.guitarmasterclass.net/guitar_forum/index.php?showtopic=56735&pid=728955&st=0&#entry728955

Hi Gab,

I've still some issues to fix on my lessons. I think they are too difficult for the time I've to spent on guitar at this time. I keep working on them, and start a new ones to stay motivated.

Posted by: Gabriel Leopardi Apr 24 2016, 04:51 PM

Hi Alex, that's a good plan. Keeping motivation is always the main goal so this is a good move.

Posted by: Alex5 May 3 2016, 10:09 PM

Hi Gab,
Finally I start again a Frusciente lesson (one you've made).
I polish my playing but I need somme advices to have thé sound.
Which type of amp and effects should I use ?

Posted by: Gabriel Leopardi May 4 2016, 02:39 PM

Hi mate! Do you mean this one?

https://www.guitarmasterclass.net/solo-guitar/john-frusciante-lesson/

Posted by: Alex5 May 4 2016, 06:34 PM

Yes it's this one

Posted by: Gabriel Leopardi May 5 2016, 09:51 PM

Great! Well, I used a Marshall amp for that amp, it was a 80 wats combo so you can start with something similar and try to find the right EQ balance.

Posted by: Alex5 May 5 2016, 09:55 PM

Great, I'll try. I'll post a take soon.

Posted by: Alex5 May 6 2016, 10:11 PM

First take

I need to focus on bends, they're not good.

Edit :

Speaking of bending, I've a problem with that.
I can play them with the right pitch when I'm improvising but it's difficult to play them well when I play an existing melody as a lesson or a song.

Here's my last impro.

I think when I play a melody which exists yet a big part of my head is focused on "What I have to play" and when I improvise, I'm just connected to the guitar.

Have you some advices ?

Posted by: Gabriel Leopardi May 8 2016, 06:13 PM

Hi Alex,

Frusciante lesson needs focus on two elements:

- Bending: You've already noted this. You are not reaching the right pitch. I recommend you to work on small blocks and practice playing the target note and then bending to it for a while until you get comfortable with each bend.

-Timing: You are not playing this one tight, and you play some phrases different compared to the original lesson. So please review timing and rhythm.

The improvisation sounds nice. You still need to give more direction to you phrasing. Improvisation is a life journey so keep on practising every day, adding new licks, techniques and exploring new parts of the neck. Analysing improvisations from your favourite players is also a good idea.

Posted by: Alex5 May 8 2016, 06:30 PM

I'll work to fix that.

I've started Gary Clark style too. wink.gif

Posted by: Gabriel Leopardi May 8 2016, 06:49 PM

Cool choice! smile.gif

Posted by: Alex5 May 31 2016, 10:28 PM

Hi

I'll post these days a take of Frusciante lesson on REC zone.

I've well progressed on Gary Clark lesson. Need to improve the end solo part.

I've started the Paradise Lost Lesson.

About covers, I try to play Muse's Plug in baby (I play it at 100bpm well, real tempo is 136bpm)
And I've started too Sweet Dreams by Marilyn Manson which is easier.

That's all smile.gif

Posted by: Gabriel Leopardi Jun 1 2016, 04:20 PM

Awesome! Great to know that you are working hard! Can't wait to hear the new samples.

Posted by: Alex5 Jun 2 2016, 10:27 AM

Hi

About the Paradise Lost Lesson, I suppose I must do both guitar lines.

Usually, I use Windows Movie Maker to make my videos. I know it's not the best (far) but enough for me.
But, I can't put 2 videos at the same time with it.

What is your software to make that ?

Posted by: Gabriel Leopardi Jun 2 2016, 02:43 PM

Hi Alex, it should be possible with any video editor, use google to check if it's possible to do screen on screen on windows movie maker. I use Adobe Premiere to do it, but again, you can use any video editor.

Hi Gab, I'm back,

I've a lot of reasons being far on GMC these last months : i've finished my new house, I've got a new job I loved, and unfortunatly, my mother died..;

I'd need time to pratice guitar again, but it's OK now.
Let's start with a new video, the Uli jon Roth lesson by Ben.
i've submited it to the workshop...

Posted by: Gabriel Leopardi Dec 4 2016, 05:37 PM

Hi Alex, great to hear from you again mate! This lesson needs some polishing regarding some elements that I'll list here:

- Vibrato: If you compare your vibrato with the original lesson, you'll notice that Ben is doing a faster one trying to emulate Uly's style. This gives the phrase a very unique feeling, I think that it's a good idea to try to emulate it a bit more since it will give you more tools for your own playing. Besides this, there are many vibratos, that even being different to the original, sound weak so the technique definitely needs work. Remember to use the other fingers to help the one that is doing the vibrato.

- Bending: The pitch of your bends, mostly in the last phrases (higher frets) is not precise (00:35). However, there is something related the tuning of your guitar that can be happening there too. (maybe old strings? or calibration issues?)

- Timing: The timing issues appear around 00:20 with the slides. It's not dramatic but you can play this part tighter. The problem continues the following 10 seconds.

- Articulation: If you listen to the original lesson you'll notice that there is some work done regarding articulation, which refers to the duration of the notes, and how they are connected along the phrases. There are many shorter notes that give this solo a staccato feel. Go for it!

Ok mate, that's all by now. You have many things to work so I hope to see a new take from you in 1 week.

Posted by: Alex5 Dec 4 2016, 08:13 PM

Thanks Gab. I'll work these points and posting a new take the next week.
