Personally, I've been playing for about 16 years now, which is over half of my life! (That makes me feel a little old sad.gif )

The first 3 years don't really count because I never practiced, but I still claim them because 16 sounds better than 13! Haha.

So, how long have you been playing guitar?

I played for a few years back in the 70's. Mostly strumming chords around the campfire and such. I never touched a guitar again for almost 25 years. I have started out again at the bottom and am having a blast. I can play some of the level 2 and 3 lessons. but am doing all the scales, modes , etc.. Old dog learning new tricks!

Some 4 years now... but I don't think it's that relevant, since I didn't seriously begin practicing until one year ago. But I guess it counts anyway. smile.gif

I'm one of the off and on players. More off than on.

I started when I was 10 or so, learning songs from a great old teacher who still lives near me. Songs like the Yellow Rose of Texas and The Big Rock Candy Mountain. I learned from sheet music as he tried to teach me to read notes. We learned basic triads for one finger chording. I didn't continue for some reason. Who knows? I was 10.

I tried again when I was 14. My instructor had a student, scheduled right before me, who was very good. So his half hour used to eat up most of my half hour. So my instructor used to give me 5 minutes and then boot me out. I stayed with him for about 3 weeks and then started playing drums.

I didn't pick up guitar again until I was 18 and learned some Neil Young songs from my brother. I tried hard to learn this type of finger style and folk acoustic, for about 2 years, but then I quit. I was traveling around the world and wasn't carrying a guitar as well as all my other crap. I suppose if it was more important to me, I could have...but it wasn't.

I bought an electric guitar when I was 27 or so, and started lessons again. I studied for about three months looking at jazz, modes and improvisation. My instructor got fired from his job at the music store and I never picked up with anyone else. I tried to play a bit myself at that point. I bought this little tascam portastudio. A little 4 track recorder on cassette tape. I sounded horrible and rather than use it to learn, I used it to demoralize and quit again before I was 30.

At about 35 I tried to play a little electric. We started seeing more sites like GMC popping up so I thought it would be good to learn this way. It didn't last. There weren't good pod type interfaces and and I had a crappy amp and now I had small children and no time.

When I was 39 I joined GMC. I have spent the last 1.5 years in dedicated study of guitar in technique, theory, and composition. I've been recording and playing in a virtual band, and have progressed more, played more, learned more, and had more fun with guitar than in the previous 30+ years combined. I've also had more frustration as well, but ...

So, sort of a long answer to a simple question, but it's not as simple as it might seem when you are looking at the age ranges on this site.

Cheers!

No idea, though I see his brother around town here. I asked about him once, but really don't remember what the answer was. I hope he continued to play because he was quite good back then even.

I've been playing almost 2 years. I started back in October 2008. It was the night of the 29th. I recorded my first guitar video the next day after about 2 hours of practice (counting the previous night's practice as well).
