Hey guys, since I cannot login on GMC (except the forums ofcourse) due some slacking of paypal, I decided to learn a new song from buckethead from his album Electric Tears. I just bought a new amp: Line 6 Spider IV 30 and with these new effects I can finally learn some sockets from that album ^^

So ye, mostly when I learn a new song just via a tab(s) from ultimate-guitar.com I just learn parts by parts and don't really care about the speed yet, just that I know the full song on the guitar. However, it seems pretty hard those songs from buckethead to learn.

So do you guys got any advice how to start?

I would start with your foot. Play the original and tap your foot in time. I don't recall any odd-signature tracks from electric tears but tapping your foot on the beats will give you a touchstone to the real song's rhythm while you're plucking out notes as you learn. It'll help you keep the timing of the licks intact, etc.

After that, I guess make sure you can identify clear phrases and melodies that you can play in full.

Then you string those phrases together.

Then you work it up to tempo?

I would recommend you to work the speedy parts or difficult parts with metronome. Take out what is hard to play for you and start to playing it slow with the metronome as guide and then, increasing speed little by little.

Do you practice with a metronome?

A metronome or a drum mashine is really essential when it comes to such things. Start slow and only speed up when you master the parts in the slower tempo.
