amazing!!!

In this seven-minute film, Pat Metheny walks viewers through the Orchestrion experience, explaining its origins and performing music from the adventurous solo recording that pairs the composer-guitarist with a phalanx of remarkable, custom-made instruments, played via solenoid switches and pneumatics.

Nah, he turned into a composer - which means that the players must pay HIM instead, in order to get allowed to play his music.... laugh.gif
Maybe he's gonna turn into a record company next time???

EDIT: I read somewhere that the developers of Synclavier (or if it was another monster synth) was involved in the project building this room full of pneumatic-driven stuff. And I don't think its midi either, since it triggers extremely fast, it must be som tone recognition system, since most of the instruments in the project doesnt need to respond to other than clean notes. (all seems to be mallet-like stuff)

There's a nice article on the development and production of Orchestrion in the April 2010 issue of Sound on Sound. Some of which confirms Staffay's points about whether its midi or not and who was involved (Synclavier and Lemur amongst others.)

OT - Metheny's been involved with Synclavier from New England Digital for as long as I remember. As Staffay says the Synclavier is/was truly one of the big monster synths and was used a lot many big hit records in the 80s and 90s. It used to cost more than a house to buy - about 250,000USD back in the early 80s.
