GMC Forum _ MTP - The Mentored Training Program _ Intermediate Competition Mentor Trial Matchups!

Posted by: Andrew Cockburn Jan 7 2009, 09:20 PM

Ok, here we are at last - I have pretty much used first come first served to match up potential mentorees to mentors, sorry if you weren't picked this time around, but remember, this is a 1 month trial period for the mentors and not the start of the program in full swing yet - we plan to find mentors for everyone so don't panic!

In a couple of cases Chris and I have had PMs expressing preferences for mentors and mentorees - we have done our best to accomodate these, again on a first come first served basis, giving priority to the wishes of the student as there were a couple of conflicts here smile.gif

Here is the list - if anyone is unhappy with the picks let me know and we'll see what we can do!

1. AJMurrel - Bondy
2. UncleSkillet - Skennington
3. FatB0t - SonOfDestiny
4. Enforcer - jer
5. Coffeeman - Big Harry
6. Wrk - Organized Confusion
7. lcsdds - Jesse
8. Tolek - Valentino
9. Vaialation - Joruus
10. Velvet Roger - Preatorian

We'll get the Sylabus up as soon as we can manage it, and remember, Mentors, that this is a test phase so we want to see what you are doing out in the open, so please don't do any of the mentoring via PM!

Any questions at all, just post here and we'll try and help out!

So we have to make forum topics specific for our mentorees?

It would be easier if we had our own board or something.

Like a sub forum of the MTP forum

BTW: Im excited about this!

We'll get back to you on this!

Current thinking is we will let you all start individual threads here, but we might want to use the Agendas like we did for the previous mentoring as it worked out well - we are just finalising this with Kris as we speak!

Andrew,
Are you going to give us a little guidance about how you want us to proceed? I know you gave us some guidelines but should we wait to do anything until we get the syllabus? Looking forward to working doing this. biggrin.gif biggrin.gif

Ok, we have decided that for the introductory phase (the next month) we will use this board as a centralized area to get the MTP going - this enables us to keep it all in one place and to all help each other a little more easily.

We will review this later and decide if the Agendas will work better in the longer term when we see how this all works out!

In the meantime, Mentors please each start a thread on this board and call it something like :

Andrew MTP Thread

(The most important part is that you put your name at the beginning!)

Mentorees, when your mantor has created his topic, jump in, say hi, and then its up to you guys!

We will be posting a suggested sylabus very soon - the idea behind this is to ensure that all the basics are covered. If a mentoree does well with the basics, of course, then it is time to move onto some more advanced stuff, which we will leave more up to the mentors and their mentorees to decide on, but the basics come first, and we will be looking at how the mentors do in assesing their mentorees grasp of the basics, and pitching their advice at an appropriate level for the mentoree.

Mentors, remember that this is still part of the competition and we will be watching how you proceed to make a final judgement on who goes forward to be mentored by Muris cool.gif Be sure to re-read the guidelines as to what we want and expect from you as this will form part of the criteria for judging.

Above all, have a great time and pass your knowledge on!

To Andrew or Smells,

Can I recommend we have two forum topics for each mentor? If the others agree.

One for structure and lessons, and one for questions and help? It's just I can see my thread becoming VERY confusing and all over the place! biggrin.gif

Posted by: jer Jan 9 2009, 05:37 PM

I had a question as well.

When this trial thing is up. Assuming it goes well and the mentor is continuing in his role, he'll have more students assigned to him correct?

Will we be staying with the mentor we have now? (assuming we want to)

I kinda agree with this. Although, just thinking about this the practice agenda system is actually a bit better equipped for this. You have your new agenda item (the lesson/assignment) and you have the comments below that item. But of course I see why to put it on the forum at this stage.

You mean one uploads thread for all 10 mentorees together or 10 seperate ones smile.gif? The latter may be ok, the first increases the clutter I guess tongue.gif

Yes Roger, an "uploads only" thread for each team. Like a collab, discussion thread and upload thread...Just a thought.

Well I surely stick with the major vote here about that subject, but I dont think we need multiple threads, as we are only 2 people posting to each other, and generally one doesnt reply unless other one has something to say so this format is kinda ok for me...

i would have asked the same question

What happens after this month ?

Posted by: Smells Jan 12 2009, 01:29 PM

Ok sorry a bit late on answering some of the questions.

on the subject of a different thread to put your mentorees takes in then yes, I think that would be a good idea, keeps things a little less cluttered and makes it easier for both parties to keep track of whats going on.

As was also mentioned I think the practice agenda is well suited for this purpose and when we get going full swing that is where the mentoring will be best placed, but purely for this competition stage we wanted to do it openly on the forum smile.gif

There will be 5 mentors picked to be mentored by Muris, after a short initial period then more mentorees will be assigned to them so the structure will be

Muris - 5 inters - 5 beginner mentorees assigned to each Intermediate

I see no reason (provided both parties agree) why the current assigned mentoree cant stay with the the current mentor, obviously there will be 5 beginner mentorees that will be "homeless" when the competition phase ends and they will be assigned new placements smile.gif

hope that made sense smile.gif

I wouldnt want to be carrying on a conversation in one thread, but then have to go elsewhere (upload thread) to watch/upload the video. To me that will become cumbersome. These practice videos are just fine in each mentoree's single thread in my opinion. I think there is some value to it all being linear and in one spot.

If thats what works for you then thats fine smile.gif

For the others if they want an "uploads" thread for their mentorees then thats fine also smile.gif

It comes down to what works best for you guys, and to decide that between Mentor and mentoree.

agree !! I think it's ok how it is by now.
Maybe later it could be good to move it to the Agendas as it will be possible to create a topic for each session/week.
Only problem with the agendas are, their are a bit hidden and not really visible in the forum over "View New Posts".

I'm also happy with the layout. I do think every week they should be moved into practice agenda with the first post of new thread giving conclusions from the past week and then have that thread for working on week 2 in. Also expect a post from me tonight Andy as I'm at work currently smile.gif

For the competition the mentoring threads are in the MTP forum boards, I think the main question that was asked was having another thread in that board for uploads, for that purpose as I said above if that particular pair want to do that then thats fine, whatever works best for individual pairings, not everyone has to do the same thing smile.gif

Later, when the MTP is in full swing the practice agenda will be a lot easier to follow week to week, than trying to follow it in the forum.

bit of a broken record moment, but this is a 4 week competition phase for the 10 Intermediate mentors, the 10 mentorees at the moment have the benefit of a little extra extended mentoring.

As a bit of a hint ... slow down, this isnt about who can get the most out of their student in 4 weeks

There is definitely nothing wrong with slow at all smile.gif, it's all about willing to learn and creating a good atmosphere for learning between the mentor and mentoree. Improvements will come over time that way (with one soon, with others a bit later smile.gif).

hey Valentino

THIS IS NOT A COMEPTITION, WHO IS MOVING FASTER !!!!!

i am also a beginner, but there are some things that i can do a bit faster than, therfore others i will be a lot slower than you and so on .......

even if we all get better there will always be one who is still better .......

i think all of you in here mentors and mentorees doing a great job and also the guys who make this possible in the background, so i think we all should keep motivation and take out the best for all of us from this

KEEP ROCKING guys

It's not about speed. It's about going at a pace that is comfortable and beneficial to you.

Just had a thought!! Will the lucky 5 mentors get their very own colour for the forum list?!? Like instructors are red etc Or maybe a custom logo type thing under the forum name? Like with student instructor?

How about a free rabbit? Or a panda. Yeah I'd take a panda please!
