Dream Theater's new album has just come out, and I'm just playing it through.

All I can say is, dear lord! You can really hear RoadRunner on this record. It's very, very good.

Thanks Darfuria, I must check it out, DT was my favorite band back in 90-s, and I always like to hear news about them.
They always do something; albums, side-project, instructionals, collaborations...

I was quite surprised at how soon this album was released after Systematic Chaos. Perhaps Systematic Chaos was badly received or something (it certainly isn't one of my favourite albums by them). Black Clouds and Silver Linings certainly isn't Scenes from a Memory, but you can really hear a difference in the quality, tone and brutality of their sound now that they are signed by RoadRunner. As with all Dream Theater albums, you have to listen to it start to finish, and typically, there are a lot of > 10 minute tracks.

Interestingly the last part of Portnoy's 12-step suite is on this album, so I'm quite interested to make a playlist containing each of the songs back from Six Degrees up until now, and listen to them in order. There's an interesting article on Wikipedia about the 12-step suite, which you can find here

Like I said in a previous thread, I'm not a big fan of the album.

I've been listening to DT since Images and Words in 1992 and in my personal opinion, this album is the worst they've ever made. Its missing the RAW Dream Theater sound that got me interested in them in the first place. Systematic Chaos was on Road Runner also and I honestly think it blows Black Clouds outta the water. This album seriously lacked the Dream Theater vibe, being mostly slow melodic songs, and the heavier songs went in a direction I never expected from the band. The only good thing I found was their final song "The Count of Tuscany", which was EPIC. The guitar solo at the end made me shiver.

The fact of the matter is, like many DT albums, you have to listen to it a lot to get hooked. So I guess I'd better put it on loop and soak it all in before I make my final judgement. Being my favorite band, I expected more from this album. PS, ONLY 6 SONGS! I don't care how long they are, there needs to be more!

They've certainly declined into a different era that is very un-Dream Theater - and I have to agree, it's missing that raw Dream Theater sound that got me into Dream Theater in the first place. However, I've come to terms with the fact we're probably not going to get another Scenes/Train of Thought-type album out of them. I like it more than Systematic Chaos, and really got into it the first time 'round.
