GMC Forum _ PRACTICE ROOM _ What made you start playing?

I actually had two instances where I wanted to play. The first was me liking Godsmack ALOT. I would listen to them all day. The way Tony Rombola played made me pick it up, but, me and my young and uneducated mind thought I would be Steve Vai within a week, so i gave it up. Then, about a month later I started listening to Metallica and alot of BB king. Whenever I would hear Kirk and BB play I would think to myself ''Damn..these guys kick so much butt, i wish i could play as good as them.'' so, I rented an Electric..and, man, I fell in love. I found it amazing that I could implement so many genres of music into my playing to create my own style. This was about 2 months ago, Im still very new but, many people have told me my progress and determination is where it should be. Ever since that day i have been hooked. Now, I wanna hear your story.

From the time I was 1 day old.. I have been around music. My family is plain ole music oriented. Lots of music.. mostly guitar and fiddle.. although my mom plays piano. For some reason, I always rejected playing music for a long time.. I learned a few chords when I was younger, but I never got into the guitar. I could play the G, C, D, E, Em, and B7. Since my family (outside of my mom) plays a lot of country/bluegrass.. Those chords were used quite often for those songs. Again, I never advanced much, but about 1 year and a half ago, I started getting into it. From that point, I was at a stage where I would play for a week, then not play for a week or so.. but then came the summer of last year, where I had tons of free time, and that is when I really got into the guitar. I can't think of a day that has gone by, that I havn't played the guitar. I am sure there are a few of them though. In conclusion, my inspiration basically came from the influence of music with my family.

=D

You're so lucky to have a music oriented family. Iam the only musician in my family, seriously. Cherish it, my brother.

I learnt a few instruments in my life(which hasnt been that long but...), and the reason i learnt them was because i love music and i want to make music...good music that i like, so i guess it was because i was listening to lots of rock and stuff, and one day, i picked up a guitar and said "I want to play like that person on stage!!"

I got bit by the music bug when I was about 12yrs old and wanted to be a drummer.

I started playing guitar when I found out I wasn't allowed to get a drum kit. Been hooked ever since.

Hmm..

I really didn't have a one "revelation" that made me pick up the guitar.... I just realised I wanted to work (or whatever) with music - and the guitar was my instrument.

From a family of musicians. Started off playing clarinet until I heard my uncle play guitar. Got hooked at that point. I took his guitar and tried to teach myself "smoke on the water". After a week of doing that one song over and over again I realized that I liked it and have never put it down since.

Pretty simple really... I saw Steve Vai play "Tender Surrender", and that was about it for me. I've been completely obsessed with instrumental guitar music ever since. However, I have moved on past Vai. He’s still a good player, but he’s just not nearly as good as I’d made him out in my head to be. I’ll always love his classic songs though… it’s just, he’s not making my top five anymore.

First time I heard David Gilmour play a song, I said to myself, "I want to do that". Starting playing 4 years ago, haven't really put the guitar down since. BTW I'm 22 now, some of you guys are lucky getting an earlier start : P My parents always wanted me to play piano, which I ended up developing skill in, but never any interest.

I still strive to adapt Gilmour's style into all my playing. I'm attempting to develop a style that is Gilmour/Jimmy Page/Heavier stuff like Slayer and Metallica. Sounds weird, and is a strange mix, but I think it ends up, or will end up, sounding great.
