Hi mate,

This is your new thread for Gab's Army. The idea is to work on your 2019 goals here.

- Technique
- Improvisation
- Chords Knowledge
- Ear Training

You've said that you have around 3/5 hours to dedicate to guitar.

Please let me know which are your favorite guitarists and bands right now, and share some videos of you playing. It can be some rancom practice / playing.

I haven't really done much self recording. Any ideas on the best way to do this? I use a MAC I play through a Line 6 helix that goes to a Line 6 PowerCab. For a Daw I use Logic Pro X. I'll do some research and see if I can figure this out.

As far as favorite guitarist and bands that is really tough. I am all over the place. and like most types of music. I mainly listen to a little harder stuff like distrurbed, shinedown, Five Finger. I grew up in the 90s so I love pearl jam, soundgarden. The band I was in played songs all over the place, Santana, Aerosmith, Led Zepplin, Weezer, U2. When I practice I usually have a tough time focusing because I like it all. Lately I have tried to focus my practice time on not learning stuff from other artists but theory, chords, scales.

You can make it simple and use your cellphone by now. Put the camera in front of you, but very close to your guitar speaker and it can work for this. Is it possible?

Ok I did not spend a lot of time working on the lesson, but I really like it, very catchy. I am going to spend a little more time getting it smoother. This is your Indie Rock Lesson based on the Pixies. I spent most the time trying to figure out the best way to record.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=42Fua6ZUW3I

below are the steps I followed to record this,

Recording Steps(I would love to get feedback on a better way to do this)
1. Imported your Backing Track into Logic Pro X
2. Recored myself playing your tab with the backing track using the Helix as a USB interface
3. I used Quicktime to record the video of myself playing
4. I then used Imovie and imported the Logic Pro .m4a recording and quicktime movie
5. Sinked up the .m4a and .mov file and posted to Youtube.

I would think their would be an easier way to do this. I would love some feedback on this. I was trying to find a way to record the video, USB input from Helix(guitar signal) and Computer Audio(backing Track) all at the same time. I tried a product called screenflow but their was too much delay between the computer audio and guitar signal.

Hi mate,

The video is excellent! That's the normal way to do this type of things. It's exactly what I do when recording my video lessons. However, finding a smoother way to record can be a good idea. I don't have experience with software as the one that you are using but there must be many different options. Kristofer Dahl uses an online service to do his streams and he mixes youtube backing tracks with guitar solos so maybe you can check out his settings or ask him HERE.

Your playing on the video is very good mate. Working on that type of musical lessons will give you tools to be able to play in the real world, with bands. You'll get the skills needed to play different type of songs so I think that it's a good plan to build a guitar plan that combines:

- Musical Lessons
- Technique lessons
- Theory concepts

Could you please share a list with lessons that you like from GMC so I can use them to build the first routine?

Thanks. I really enjoyed doing the video. I immediatley noticed several flaws in my playing. Although I did not spend a lot of time on this one, I could hear my timing was off in a few parts, my articulation, and during the recording of my video my hands where not smooth. That is only the second video I have ever done and it allows me to see what I need to work on. This was not a super difficult lesson, but with the video I could see lots of little things to work on that I struggled with, I can for sure see the benefit of doing these videos.

- Musical Lessons
I like your lessons a lot. I would love to do 3 or 4 more videos of your level 2 lessons and focus on improving some of the simple things I noticed in the video above. I am thinking these ones
https://www.guitarmasterclass.net/ls/Classic-Punk-The-Clash/
https://www.guitarmasterclass.net/ls/Indie-...-Kings-Of-Leon/
https://www.guitarmasterclass.net/ls/Silversun-Pickups/
https://www.guitarmasterclass.net/ls/Muse-Goes-Stoner/
- Technique lessons
One thing I am not great at is speed. this might be a good lesson for me to work on 16th notes at a little faster speed
Muse Style Lesson - https://www.guitarmasterclass.net/rhythm-gu...e-style-lesson/
- Theory concepts
This looks like a good list of theory to memorize and read. https://www.guitarmasterclass.net/guitar_fo...?showtopic=3351 Several of the links do appear broken. Do you have any other suggestions for theory. I feel like a have good understanding of all the scales and modes and the entire fretboard, but I would like to spend some time completley mastering the fretboard and modes.

Hey Gab a question.

I have been working on this lesson - https://www.guitarmasterclass.net/ls/Indie-Rock-III-Pixies/

I have recorded myself several times and each time I notice little imperfections in minor timing, articulation, flowing from note to note, etc as seen in this video - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=42Fua6ZUW3I. I guess I am wondering is my playing really that off. I don't think I have ever noticed this detail when I am practicing. When playing with the band, I am guessing these imperfections are drowned out by the drums, bass, and other guitars. If I turn up the backing track just a little it seems to burry most of these imperfections. If I add a Little Compression and EQ it also cleans some of this up. I guess my question is how concerned should I be about these as I am trying to perfect my craft, especially if I want to record my own music. and how do I fix some of these.

Hi mate! Great stuff here!

About your question in the second post. That's the reason why we always recommend to record your guitar practices and incentive students to share takes here and at REC program. That's the best way to analyse our playing and notice those details that make the difference. When playing, we are thinking on many things at the same time so we can lose details. Then, things become natural and happen without thinking too much. So I really recommend you to dedicate more time to this (and other lessons) to adjust all the details. That's what will polish your guitar technique.

I think that your lessons list is cool and that's what I recommend you to focus during the nexts weeks of practice. Let's master all those lessons and then we'll see if you need any specific exercises to polish technique or if you maybe just need to continue working on this type of lessons but increasing the difficulty.

Regarding theory. Here you'll find everything you need to read.

https://www.guitarmasterclass.net/guitar_fo...showtopic=47852

https://www.guitarmasterclass.net/guitar_fo...showtopic=50470

And we can complement all that info with GMC lessons.

What do you think?

Gabe I am working on the https://www.guitarmasterclass.net/ls/Silversun-Pickups/ lesson. Really love the melody.

Question. During the chord progression it goes C#m, B, E, A you play the octaves of c#, b, g#(3rd of e),b then the second time you play c#,b,g#, e(5th of a)

My question is the b over the A the first time through, What is the theory behind this. Is it to make a Asus 2 sound. or is it just because it sounds cool.

Thanks

By playing that note I'm adding the 9th to the chord which is a very nice extension that makes chords sound "sweeter", less strong.

Try playing A5 on 6th string (fret 5 on 6th, fret 7 on 5th), and add B note (fret 9 on 4th string). You'll like it!
