GMC Forum _ Gabriel Leopardi _ Fzalfa's Thread

Posted by: Gabriel Leopardi Apr 16 2015, 04:35 PM

Hi Laurent! Welcome to your thread for Gab's Army!

Here I'll share some info about you to have it as reference:

Influences: BB king, joe pass, Slash, dave mustaine ,Mikael Åkerfeldt (opeth), eric johnson, bucket head, dimebag diamond darrell, Daniel Gildenlöw (pain of salvation), al pitrelli, and many jazz guitarist

Theory Knowledge: scale construction, intervals, chords construction , i can analyse music metrics, ihave a lot to learn, as i have said i started to learn this in september

You said that you have around 3 hours per day for practice so you'll be able to work on technique and improvisation stuff as well as learn licks based on your favorite players.

During this first week I would suggest a routine based on the things I think you should work more on your own improvisations. I refer to dynamics, vibrato, alternate picking and phrasing.

Technique work: (1:30 hour)
Bending: http://www.guitarmasterclass.net/ls/String-Bending/
Dynamics: http://www.guitarmasterclass.net/ls/writing_a_solo_dynamics/
Alternate picking: http://www.guitarmasterclass.net/solo-guitar/alternate-workout/

Improvisation: (1:30)
- Start working on the improvisation course: http://www.guitarmasterclass.net/guitar_forum/index.php?showtopic=42832&view=findpost&p=699881
- Choose a lesson from GMC archive based on a guitarist that you like. Learn the licks, practice them over the backing, create variations, combine them with your own improvisations, record yourself and share your recordings here.

These lessons are my suggestions but you can replace any of them if you find another one that fits more which what you'd like to learn.

Please share your thoughts! smile.gif

hi here

this a preview about the dynamics exercices, this record is not perfect..... i do not have learn the end part, sorry

Laurent

Posted by: Gabriel Leopardi Apr 18 2015, 05:02 PM

Hi Laurent, nice first take of this one. Once you could play the whole thing you will have to focus on feeling and dynamics of your playing. How? Listen to each phrase played by Muris and pay attention to his vibrato, you'll see that he adds wide vibrato even on bends, try to emulate it in your playing. Then do the same but with dynamics, listen to each phrase and put your focus on the different intensities used with his pick, work on very small parts and try to get a similar sound. At first it's good to emulate the instructor's playing, then, once you master these techniques, you can give your own spirit to your phrases.

Posted by: fzalfa Apr 18 2015, 06:57 PM

ok, i'll end the learning of the lesson, and i'll work the details

Posted by: fzalfa Apr 29 2015, 06:21 PM

as my wife ask to me, i do guitar for less time, and surprise !! lessons are learned faster.....

for now, i have learn the whole lesson about solo dynamics, and i'm at the half of the bending lesson.

Laurent

Posted by: Gabriel Leopardi Apr 29 2015, 11:19 PM

What does this teach you?

Posted by: fzalfa May 13 2015, 11:44 AM

hi Gabriel

I have learned a lot of things, but i retain one very evident:

bending is a great job to do, i learn to do it well and into the right tone.

about dynamics, the lesson teached me some things i cannot quantize because it's more about a feeling than something technical.

my way to play it don't match exactly the lesson , i do fight with me to put away my wrong habits.

i have started the third lesson about alternate picking, it's weird, i have learn the half for now, i can pretty play it at 70 bpm.

Hi Laurent! Congrats on your great work! These two samples show that you are working hard and that the progress can be noted! The dynamics lesson is very close, you can play the whole thing at tempo and most of the licks clean and clear. There is room to polish, but what you could do on the next days of practice is to try to emulate even more the dynamics of the original take. Notice how Muris goes from accentuated parts to softer parts in a very smooth way. I can hear some dynamics work on your take but there is still more room for it. I think that you could share a REC take in a few days to have more feedback from other instructors as well.

About bending, your bends are sounding on pitch and consistent on the audio that you shared. You are also doing a very good job with this lesson.

Ok, it's been a month of work since I shared the first routine so we are ready to start adding and switching things. Have you been working on other stuff, concepts? What about the improvisation tasks? any news about it?

That's great! Those thread makes you train your composing / improvisation / creativity skills so we are covered! We can continue working on the most technical aspects here.

I'll give you one week more to finish the bending lesson and polish the other two ones. (have you worked on the alternate picking lesson?)

Then, we will start with 3 new lessons, ok?

Posted by: fzalfa May 23 2015, 08:31 PM

QUOTE
have you worked on the alternate picking lesson?

ok for 3 other lessons

yes the first and second part, i play it not at full speed, but about at 70bpm, faster is possible but not clean.

in the other side i do not spend more than 1 hours on.

one week for everything ??

i can finish the bend lesson, i can (maybe) finish the alternate picking, but i cannot play it at full speed until one week....( with drugs??? possible ?)

i'll do my best !

Laurent

Posted by: Gabriel Leopardi May 24 2015, 09:55 PM

hahah no drugs required or welcome here, it will have a bad impact in your life and playing. I mean that you have 1 week more of focusing only on this lessons, then we will add some new stuff to keep your mind learning new things and motivated. This lessons will stay on your diary practice to polish details and increase tempo but you'll also work on new stuff. Does it make sense? smile.gif

Posted by: fzalfa May 24 2015, 10:33 PM

hi Gabriel

i have started to work both lesson, near to the end about bending, but the part i am learn bend my mind, i need time smile.gif

about alternate picking i'am atthe half of the lesson, i can play it almost clean (with hard concentration) at 90 bpm, i cannot check my mail or read wikipedia articles when i play as usual !!

samples in a near future smile.gif

Laurent

Posted by: Gabriel Leopardi May 28 2015, 04:21 PM

Looking forward the samples. smile.gif

https://soundcloud.com/dizy-laurent/alternate-test-5

a sample with an impro , i have learn the 4 first parts, i try to play at 90 bpm with the wrong guitar, (very big string flat ronded), so precesion with the tremble is not good.

i do better with my LP at 80bpm, near perfect

Laurent

Posted by: Gabriel Leopardi May 29 2015, 02:25 PM

Hi Laurent, thanks for the sample. It's good to practice technique exercises on the tricky guitar because then everything will feel easy on the other guitar.

Nice improvisation on the second part of the backing!

Have you seen this thread?

another take

https://soundcloud.com/dizy-laurent/test-alternate-90bpm

i continue to learn the others parts of the exercices and maybe play it at 80bpm instead of 90...

i do not notice this topic, it's a good idea, i always jam (almost try to) on BT when i do not know what to play

laurent

Posted by: Gabriel Leopardi May 30 2015, 04:44 PM

Hi Laurent! This new audio also shows that you need to improve your timing, mostly on the second half. Also, I noted that you are not playing the patterns complete, there is always a note lacking, please re-check the tabs and you'll see it. If not, let me know.

Keep on the hard work!

Interesting!

Posted by: fzalfa Jun 4 2015, 04:36 PM

Hi Gabriel

nothing posted today, i have work on alternate workout 2.5 hours today, change my right hand position and now use my pinky to guide the hand, less strange noises (fingers was on the strings) better mediator handling, better alternate picking tech, better attack, better all, but i must relearn how to play, so

today i have learn until part 6, i can play the 6 parts at 80-90 without muche errors , i'll post a sample tomorow or tonight, this might need rythm and dynamics polishing.... maybe

i works also on the special track, musicaly it's done at 60% but the timing give me issue, it's a 5 step (is it the right definition) and the notes always start at the 4th step...... weird !!

Laurent

Posted by: Gabriel Leopardi Jun 5 2015, 01:11 PM

Hi Laurent, thanks for the update. I'm glad to know that the Vchat explanations had a big impact in your guitar playing. Please keep on the diary work and let me know when there is new stuff to check.

Hi Gabriel

this is another sample from the alternate workout job, sound better for me.

i have learn technic about alternate picking, a bit of legato , now i can play it faster , but i have trouble about concentration (paint killer is disturbing), so i do (idiots)mistakes.

this the body of proof

https://soundcloud.com/dizy-laurent/alternate-workout-5

see you wednesday smile.gif

i think about send a REC about dynamics solo lesson, i feel it good !

Laurent

Posted by: Gabriel Leopardi Jun 10 2015, 02:32 PM

Hi Laurent, thanks for the update. This lesson shows that you are on the right track but it obviously requires much more days of practice to be able to play the whole thing precise, in other words, tight and clear. It has little issues here and there but it just a matter of concentration and practice to feel more familiar with the patterns.

About the REC take, sounds good to me. It's always helpful to get other points of view.

Posted by: fzalfa Jun 11 2015, 03:54 PM

about the REC, i think not be ready, Mr M told me, your are now ready now.

so i try to record another video, but it's worst......

then two options:

- i do not have the required level

- i must work again and again

Posted by: fzalfa Jun 15 2015, 06:18 PM

yes i have notice pitch and timing issue.....

i can explain this cause i totaly change my picking technics, according to the darius lesson and your advices.

and of course cause i need to work this lesson

i have start the lesson of darius about alternate picking, very helpfull, the concept is really understood by now, i must practice again and again....

hi Gabriel

i feel stucked , i do not have the sens to really go up

i was scanveging my HDD archives, i do some sort to organise my stuff ino ther way, and i had record hours and hours of me playing.

i have dig a file , in this time i consider this one as my best track ! (i still laught since i listen it !! )

in march:

https://soundcloud.com/dizy-laurent/nice-one

when i listen this ,i do admit one thing: working is paying !!! but i think learning too slowly !! i spend hours and hours

what is my problem !!? i do not work in the right way ? too much ? not enought with serious ?

is my question is rightly asked ?

Laurent

Posted by: Gabriel Leopardi Jul 10 2015, 04:00 PM

Hi Laurent,

I like the way you work on your guitar playing. You work on it by jamming over backings tracks and that's a very good way to train your playing but also develop your own voice with the instrument. However, it can be also sometimes a bit chaotic since there is not a schedule or program to cover. If you practice every day, your playing will obviously improve, but there are some ideas that come to my mind that can make your practice more effective.

What about writing down a series of guitar goals or guitar elements that you want to polish and master? For example, let's say that you write:

- Alternate Picking
- Vibrato
- Bending
- Dynamics
- Triad phrasing.

The idea is to organize your practice around these elements. You can work on 1 element each day, 1 each week, or maybe on 4 elements each day, around 25 minutes for each one.

You would continue practicing over backing tracks but focusing on this elements, but you'll also search for some gmc lessons that give you ideas and exercises on how to work on them. You can also dedicate some time to see how your favorite players use it in their own playing.

Does it make sense? smile.gif

Posted by: fzalfa Jul 10 2015, 06:09 PM

Hi Gabriel

Yes it does

can you advice me some triad exercices ?

for bending, dynamics, vibrato and alternate pucking i have all i need (provided by yourself, of course wink.gif )

Laurent

Posted by: Gabriel Leopardi Jul 12 2015, 01:37 AM

Hi Laurent, at first you should learn major and minor triads inversions everywhere.

These two lessons are cool because harmonize the major and minor scales with triads. It's very helpful for improvising and arranging.

Hi Gabriel

Like a notebook , i write here what i'm doing, this keep you on touch

so , i have work on the creativity workout as you have seen, the timing workout to, with more or less success, i still work on this f***in 16th...

i have done some work about Europa, i have discover some new ways to play chords, do try with anatoles , build a personal chord progession and apply them for soloing, things are on the ways, it seem to be a big part, os i do not really know how to handle it.

still on triads works, alternate workout an solo dynamics lessons smile.gif

work a bit with keyboard, and midi file assembly, this remind me the old time when i was playing with soudtracker on amiga computer.

this is enought for one man i think smile.gif

see you tomorow at Vchat

Laurent

Posted by: Gabriel Leopardi Aug 10 2015, 05:53 PM

Hi Laurent, thanks for the update. Yes, this is a lot of work. I assume that you are having around 3 hours to dedicate to music, don't you?

I wanted to check the amount of time to know how much time you are dedicating to each topic to be sure that you are covering too much and not going deep enough.

Posted by: fzalfa Aug 10 2015, 06:00 PM

Hi Gabriel

Somedays i spend 7hours, and somedays 1 or 2, that's depand on my wife patience smile.gif (rarely 0....... )

but your are right when you bet on 3 hours , it's an average value.

i do not schedule a lot, maybe it's a fool, i cans spend 2 hours play the same stuff, but globaly on two or three days i try to works once on all.

Laurent

Posted by: Gabriel Leopardi Aug 10 2015, 06:07 PM

That's ok. You sound comfortable with your current plan so I think that it's appropriated at this moment, mostly based on the fact that I'm noting good performance in the different threads and tasks that you are participating.

I feel that the current plan covers everything you should cover to progress as a musician so keep going.

Posted by: fzalfa Aug 24 2015, 08:31 PM

Hi Gabriel

the story goes on, as you see i work on both creativ workout, the #1 is on the way, cause it's a hugest work cause i do everything
keyboard is notlike guitar, i learn to use Cubase and other synth plugins, i'll try the guitar to midi inferface from my boss gt100.

i have plan a complet track based on your creativ workout #2 BT (i still wait for your answer on MP)

still work on lesson as i have done before, things are learned , the job start to pay.

i'll redo my first REC during September, i work on some todds's lesson, and i focus myself on the play quality, sound , vibrato, non wanted sounds etc.... a huge work

that's almost all

This song has one of the most beautiful melodies I've ever heard. I remember listening a lot to this version when I was a teenager:

I think that it's a good backing to train your improvisation and soloing skills. As we've talked at the chat room, remember to work focusing on different concepts each time when practicing, and when just jamming for fun, do what your heart says. smile.gif

These two are killer:

Posted by: fzalfa Aug 26 2015, 06:42 PM

yes i'll focus onto the different section, but before do this track, i'll work on the BT i have talk in private with you !

i have planed tp play it in the jeff beck's style, before have hear it, very nice one !! the two other version are too far out of my skill

but i have give my boss gt for some days , when i('ll kept it at home, i'll try to play with my volume pedal !!

what's up ?

for me, some stuff, i works shred tech with Todd to learn better picking control and play more cleany, and that work !
i work on the up to flame collab, i already have post an example , and i still work on.

i work on my track record based on your lesson BT, things are going on.

i work on over the raimbow too, pretty slowly, i take my time. i do not meet my friend Yann about his, he is to overbooked with gig and concert all around.

i work on my previous REC , gently polishing it.

that's all (and enought i think)

cheers

Posted by: fzalfa Nov 25 2015, 09:53 PM

Hi Gabriel

some word to do a quick point:

Everydays i work on:

- your impro topic
- your expanding guitar lick topic
- post hardcore collab topic
- Todd's lesson learning, #17 in progress
- one or two hours about guitar Speed software for drilling, i learn scales, shapes etc.... from 40 to 120 bpm for now, trying higher in few days.
- i have start the rythmic lesson from the GMC.... i go slowly, brand new for me.

yes, i practice smile.gif

thats enought i think.

Laurent

Posted by: Gabriel Leopardi Nov 27 2015, 05:37 PM

That's a perfect plan. Everything sounds great, keep going! smile.gif

Posted by: fzalfa Jan 18 2016, 07:40 PM

Hi Gabriel

for now, i work on:

- Your topic about impro

- Todd's lesson about shred

- Guitar speed trainer software everydays, about shapes and pattern drilling

- Guitar scale method, drilling about arpegios, scales

- I learn almost at 80% A tout le monde from Megadeth, the solo still give me trouble at full speed now, full cover in 2016Q1

-I learn Faith in the Other from Opeth, learned almost at all. this permit to work rythm and chords works, Soon a cover.

- I work rythm lesson, this is hard to keep it enter in my brain ;D

So this year 'll be my rythmic work year.

this is my pain !

Laurent

Posted by: Gabriel Leopardi Jan 19 2016, 01:49 PM

Hi Laurent, thanks for the update.

That's a very complete schedule. As making music is the main goal and when you really assimilate what you are learning and practicing, I recommend to dedicate more time to improvising and composing. You didn't shared here how much time you dedicate to each topic but I just wanted to give this suggestion in the case you dedicate the same amount of time to each task.

Keep on the hard work!

i feel more confortable with struming, and i don"t know why, but i thought i was stucked for the 2 last week, and suddently, since this morning, things are clearer, i play faster, with more chosen notes, my play approache is different today.

i have done a run ( 1h40m LOL) while jamm'in on cantaloupe island (from erbie hancock), i love this song cause i can jam for hours and try a lot of patterns and arpeggios , and now i feel better on, non stop playin, doing new something, a new overall color, while using my habits and adding something new.

definitely, practice pay, really,i must be patient and play play play.....

maybe a day, i'll grow up and be a fine guitar player biggrin.gif

Hi Gabriel

What to notes like (2) means on this tab ? how to play it ?

cheers

Laurent

Posted by: Gabriel Leopardi Jan 28 2016, 01:33 PM

Hi Laurent, this means that the note continues ringing without playing it, so you play it once in the first measure and it keeps ringing. In order to make this easier to follow I recommend to check the song or solo that you are learning to understand exactly how this sounds.

Hi Gabriel

work'in hard on a bit tricky Opeth tittle "hours of wealth"

the main parts are known, i have work the solo at 50%..... but it seem to work nicely

some parts are tricky for me..... specialy after 1:34..... i can play the melody but a bit too much slow, i have saw some method to do it, but this one i use seem to be the most as they play it.

the solo is joyfull for me (at 3:45) , i play near as it as !!! i surprise myself today!!

so still work on !! and other drilling stuff

Special thankx to my friend Baal41 who help me to decode some parts !! " tu est un vrais pote Jason ! "

it's a rare pleasure to play some beloved tittle !!!!! very motivating !

Laurent

Posted by: Gabriel Leopardi Feb 10 2016, 05:13 PM

That's cool laurent! I have to lean some of these beautiful songs. I love listening to them.

Does their last album (Pale Communion) include many acoustic songs as this one too?

I'd like to hear you playing this one...

Posted by: fzalfa Feb 10 2016, 08:05 PM

Hi

you"ll can listen some parts soon !!!!!

so as i can't have a backtrack, i'll do everything by myself, as i'll do for "faith in the other" , i have found a new way to play it with two guitars, the tittle is now well known, i'll record a demo soon !!!

Pale communion is placed between damnation and ghost reveries.

i have buyed a double book with damnation and deliverance in standart CD format, and provided with two DVD in Hires audio version of the both albums, listen it in 192Khz float lostless format with a 192 Khz audio card, is awesome !!!!

i'll share some parts i'll record maybe tonight !

edit:

i have done a try with two track, without timing base it's a bit weird. at the end, i do a big distorded chord...... i'm sorry !!!

https://soundcloud.com/laurent-377054242/opeth-test-2

edit:

a try with the backtrack and voice, can't stop to do errors.... maybe tired
but still have timing issues..... not an easy tittle to play

Cheers

Laurent

Posted by: Gabriel Leopardi Feb 11 2016, 01:44 PM

Hi Laurent! You've been working really hard!

I've listened to both versions and I can note that you've learn everything well and now it's time to adjust everything, to be able to play the chords and arpeggios smooth and keep timing. Practicing over the backing track is very important to achieve this so try to focus on it. If you are not comfortable with tempo, you can slow the backing down, but please practice over the backing.

Posted by: fzalfa Feb 11 2016, 03:34 PM

Hi Gab

Yes i have do some work, and still doing it......

This is a small cover of "in my time of need", it's an early one, i still work on

i have record two take, one with the main guitar, and another with chords, i do a try about a small solo impro at the end, but the preset wasn't the right one, this solo wasn't premedited !

[attachment=44024:in_my_ti...lo_impro.mp3]

i'll do it for "hours of wealth" too when i'll finish to learn it

cheers

Laurent

Nice!

Is the chord at 00:53 right? I'm not sure but maybe yes... just check it out.

Another question, are you analyzing a bit the chords and tonalities used for composing these tunes? The theory behind masterpieces can be really inspiring...

Yes , a little bit , i search to understand how it work !!

playing the chords is really usefull for soloing !

Laurent

Hi Laurent,

yes, chords are great to understand the fret board, that's why I think that it can be really useful to go deeper with theory behind chords and progressions.

The song is on the way, but you have to practice! Many chords sound with muted notes, and there are timing issues here and there.

Hi Laurent, good job! This is getting better. You still need to continue adjusting timing but the good news is that you are much closer now, so you are working it right. In order to adjust each phrase, I recommend to work on small block again, this time focusing on being precise with rhythm, notes duration and timing.

Posted by: fzalfa Feb 29 2016, 08:00 PM

Hi Gabriel

Still work on Opeth track, more and more masterd, i still work on Megadeth "a tout le monde", the Solo is near to be almost perfect in term of timing and speed, i have learn the end part arpegios, so technicaly this one is complete, i can , and i'll record a full guitar cover , rythm, solo and arpegios.

i start to work on another Opeth title, "To ride the desease" and "Burden", to work on theses f****inOpeth tracks i see my rythm play improved a lot, i have spend some hours to play with my friend Yann, and he was rally amazed about my progress, so i keep work on !!

As i have send you a link to a Godfather cover impro, you can see i have work on too.

I still work on the assigmements one your topic, even if i do not have post any takes since the last one.

still work on a blues rythm lesson, i'll do a REC soon i think,

Still work with Todd...... practice and practice even more.....

i have stop to work a lot with my jackson, cause the position cause my pain in my left elbow..... i drink a lot of water and play with a LP to void pain

theses are the last news !

edit:

last evening i have learn the rythm section, now i work on the first solo....... woaw, a bit hard about dynamics....

yes i still work.

i was talking about the "Burden" solo from opeth,i have learn the first one with the full track rythm & chords.

it's absolutly awesome how learn chords and rythm pattern from a track helps to jam on , i can sone some really tasty solo lick on !

it look like i have open another door !! so happy !

Hi Gabriel

one morning of work:

-two rythm guitars with different grid
-the solos is not really mastered......

an early prev....

edit: oops

i have omit to mix the first solo.......

Laurent

Posted by: Gabriel Leopardi Mar 4 2016, 05:46 PM

Hi Laurent, this is evolving really well!

Some details:

The lead guitar that appears at 00:25 is a bit loud. The distorted section at 00:44 could sound tighter, work on the connection of the chords and also on the single strings details. In the end, when the solo starts I notice that your bends are not totally on pitch, work on it too.

Keep on the hard work!

Posted by: fzalfa Mar 4 2016, 05:52 PM

Hi Gabriel

As i named it , it's a preview.

So i still work on learning the how to play the solos, i have recorded with GR5, a layer over another one.... so i had volume issue smile.gif

i'll redone this part with all the solos and i'll try to be better !, then after i'll continue to learn this track !

Laurent

Posted by: fzalfa Mar 5 2016, 12:46 PM

Hi Gabriel

I have check some lives and cover and it appear that:
The tab I have are far more complex than what they play in live....
And this sound more natural to my ears, so I'll always keep an eyes on the tab
But I'll more listen my ears.

Today I'm at the half of the tittle. so happy to be able to learn and play on !

The harder is coming...... Pray for me

Laurent

Posted by: Gabriel Leopardi Mar 6 2016, 05:53 PM

That's normal. Maybe tabs are not completely right or maybe they simplify things for playing live. It's different to play sitting down at the studio than playing live, so you'll find that many guitarists sometimes simplify or improvise some parts at concerts.

Posted by: fzalfa Mar 6 2016, 06:27 PM

hey , stay online 5 minutes....

i finalyse my new preview !!

Hey Gabriel

This is another take of my current knowledge about this song, in fact i know more, but i prefre finalyse this besfore go further.

still some timing and notes issue.... work on

the intermediate solo is not really good, i have put it but it's not really good.

edit: damn i do not have mix the intro....... as a producer i suck a lot !

Posted by: Gabriel Leopardi Mar 7 2016, 04:11 PM

Hi Laurent, this is getting better, good job. It still needs polishing but I can hear that your timing is tighter, the chord changes smoother and the lead guitar is also a bit more adjusted. There are some fast licks in which I note that your hands are not perfectly in sync, you need to work on it.

Keep on practicing.

Hi Laurent, it's great to know that this songs are making you practice a lot! Playing along with songs that we like is the best way to get in shape in a real musical situation. It's much better than practicing exercises because you play the real thing, rhythm and lead guitar. Keep on practicing this stuff and if you want to make it even more helpful, analyze what's happening regarding theory.

Hi Gabriel

I have start to learn "Manathan", it's a difficult one !! wow.... so i can play some parts for now.... seem more complex later...

i have start to learn "ending credit" from Opeth, rythm, solo ... the whole package, and i finish my work on burden

edit:

Laurent

Posted by: Gabriel Leopardi Mar 24 2016, 03:12 PM

I love this Opeth's tune. The melody is great, it's a perfect mix of optimism and melancholy. It's just perfect!

Your playing is also good, you just need to continue practicing to make everything sound cleaner. There are noise phrases in the song so be sure to mute the strings that you are not playing. I also can find some pitch issues, in some bends, but also in some long notes from the first phrases. Be sure to avoid extra pressure that generates this pitch issue.

This is on the right track but needs polishing.

Posted by: fzalfa Mar 24 2016, 09:22 PM

Hi Gabriel

This is a take with another backtrack and a different sound preset..... more in the "spirit" of the original one.

i have paid attention about pitch issue and bend, hope this is good for you

Play it VERY slow, at a speed that you can play it.

Posted by: fzalfa Apr 12 2016, 01:50 PM

Hi Gabriel

i hope his help .

my main trouble is about the third and last arpegio, the third is weird to do, and the last seem to do not make sense .

what is your mind ?

Laurent

Posted by: Gabriel Leopardi Apr 12 2016, 03:15 PM

Thanks a lot for the video!

Now I can see clearly that the problem is that your left hand is not familiar with these new shapes. The best way to practice this is to isolate each chord and practice it. Practice the motion that you hand needs to do to play it, keep the shape for some time as a stretch exercise. Do this diary for some time (20 minutes). After some days practice going from one chord to the other. Start slowly, and work on making the transition smoother.

This is the only way, don't worry about the left hand arpeggio at first, work on your left hand.

Posted by: fzalfa Apr 19 2016, 03:42 PM

Hi gabriel

About "to rid the desease" i have found an alternate way to play it, very close from the previous one, in fact few changes but it help a lot.

i'll soon be able to play theses arpegio at the full speed, for now i can play the chords at the good rythm.

then, i have:

- start to learn "this love" from pantera, a good way to apply the learned lesson with Todd.

- slow down on "burden" because i can play the last part at the good speed, some details need more work, but i prefere to focus mayself on other task.

- work again speed & shape drill, refresh and enhance my knowledge is good.

- participate to the last collab project.

and that's all for now, enought for a simple man, so i spend hours about drill drill and drill.

cheers

Hi Laurent,

Your right hand technique is different on this video compared with the original lesson. The instructor is using hybrid picking and that allows him to have some extra dynamics that are not appearing in your take. Check out his right hand, and listen how the rhythm is played with different intensities and this is use as an expression tool.

Hi gabriel.

Laurent

Posted by: Gabriel Leopardi Sep 24 2016, 09:50 PM

Hi Laurent, it's not a must to use fingers, but as it's a lesson for Hybrid Picking, I think that it's a good plan to play it with pick + fingers.

Hi Gabriel

This is another attempt about this lessonk, i have work the picking a bit

Cheers

Laurent

Posted by: Gabriel Leopardi Oct 18 2016, 07:15 PM

Hi Laurent, this is getting better. The overall sounds good, but it has room to sound more connected with the groove (you tend to rush a bit the tempo), and also to add more dynamics, which is easier with fingers.

NEW GOALS:

- rythm: still have issue with because it lack of work, but i have done some improvement since i play every week in a pub with other guys

- legato: faster, cleaner, with more complex licks and more strenght

- sweep: almost unvolontary i do some sweeping, so i think it's time this years to start to work on

- strange scale: yes sometime i love to know more scales !!!!

What's your current guitar routine?

Posted by: fzalfa Jan 14 2017, 10:30 PM

Hi Gabriel

My routine is almost two hours of daily guitar work:

- i work on Todd's lesson for one hour or less
- i jam on random backtrack on Utube, then i learn new chords and taste some other tonality and scale

except the lesson, the other work is more for fun than a realy serious way to do.

Sometime i work on some song, almost Opeth ones

Nice! Yes, Modes are a whole new world. Let me know when you've read the second one and we'll start working on getting the feel of each mode.

Hi Gabriel

This is a take about the sweep picking lesson

After watching it i notice my picking is almost down to up, not appliable about sweeping.....

I must do another take with correct picking method in order to made a decent REC.

Hi mate, good job!

I don't note anything to fix regarding your technique based on this video. Most of the sweeps sound tight and clean. When playing Sweep Picking, we usually do some kind of circle with our right hand when crossing all the strings. Check out some sweep picking videos (you can see the masters like Jason Becker, or Yngwie Malmsteen) to see what I mean.

Keep rocking!

Hi Gabriel

i can use the last one for a REC ?

Yeah! This is a good lesson to start getting into Dorian Mode:

https://www.guitarmasterclass.net/solo-guitar/gilmours-dorian-use/

Please work on the lesson, and improvise over the backing track applying those concepts.

Hi Gabriel

This is a take about the Dorian Lesson.

Is it right ?

Cheers

Laurent

Posted by: Gabriel Leopardi Feb 17 2017, 01:40 PM

Good! This is definitely sounding Dorian. Well done. The next exercise could be to try to target any note from G7 chord when the chord change happens. At first experiment with the third (cool.gif. Jam over dorian more when Dm sounds, and try to resolve to the third of G, to then continue the phrase.

Analyse the original lesson and notice the note choices over each chord. Which notes are longer, or player on the strong beats.

Hi mate, yes, it's the major third.

Posted by: fzalfa Feb 28 2017, 08:16 AM

Hi Gabriel

SO what can i do with this B ?

i do not understand

Cheers

Laurent

Posted by: Gabriel Leopardi Mar 1 2017, 01:13 AM

Following the chords with its thirds is a great way to practice improvisation. You can start by playing only the thirds of each chord. Try it, and you'll see how the notes that you play go great with the chord progression. Then, you can add some other notes from the scale as passing notes.

By following the chords, we mean that you play target any of the notes of the chord in your solo to give the melody an harmonic feel. When this is done correctly, you can hear the chord progression even by listening only to the lead guitar solo. I suggested starting with thirds because it's the nicer one to target, but you can go for root, fifth, seventh, or any other note that is part of the chord.

It's not necessary to learn the whole thing but read the texts and see how the solo is build as an example to what I'm explaining here.

Posted by: Gabriel Leopardi Mar 5 2017, 06:33 PM

Hi mate, yeah, I can get the nervous feeling. What happened??

In this video you are targeting mostly roots and fifths. I would try targeting thirds, and connecting the ideas with more melodic stuff in between it. What do you say?

i have a neightbo who smoke at his windows and the ashes and the old cigarets are coming in my son's bedroom, because he live at the upstair.

i have ask him to pay attention to his ashestray several time, and yesterday my wife ask him another time, and he wasn't cool with her, so i climb to his home, knock at the door and when he open the dorr i directly punch his nose without any word, he knew why.

roots and fifths ? ok i must target thirds, ok, i'l ltry to do this.

if i correctly understand, i play the third of the displayed chord during the lesson: F Gm Am Bb C Dm Bb and C ?

so: A Bm Cm Db E Fm Dm E ?

Cheers

Laurent

Posted by: Gabriel Leopardi Mar 6 2017, 02:12 PM

I'm sorry about the issue with the neighbour.

The thirds are not chords but notes. Also, these thirds must be diatonic based on the tonality of the progression. For example, over F which is a Major chord, the thirds will be major (A), over Gm the thirds will be its minor third (Bb), and so... does it make sense?

Posted by: fzalfa Mar 6 2017, 02:49 PM

Yes 3 tones when major choses
Ans 2 1/2 when minor, right ?

Laurent

At this point continue playing with triads but slowly start applying the concept shared by Joe in this video. Notice how he has a precise knowledge of the triads (chord tones) and the other notes from the scale to get the "tension & release" thing happening.

Work over that new backing. Practice following the chords with its tones.

Share a new recording in 3 days.

Posted by: fzalfa Mar 21 2017, 08:21 PM

hi Gabriel

things aren't really clear for me, but i'll try a take tomorow !

cheers

Laurent

Posted by: Gabriel Leopardi Mar 21 2017, 09:43 PM

Hi mate, please feel free to ask everything you need. smile.gif

At this point, the most important thing is that you identify the 3 notes that are part of the chord (root, third and fifth) all along the fretboard. This are the notes that will give a stable feel when improvising. There is nothing more complex than that to be understood at this moment.

So we have a backing track with these two chords: C - F

C chord contains the notes C, E, and G. F chord contains the notes F, A and C. The first thing that you should be able to do is to only play notes from the chords when each chord is sounding.

Then, you can slowly start adding some other notes from C major scale used as passing notes to connect the chord tones.

Posted by: fzalfa Mar 21 2017, 10:57 PM

thankx Gabriel

at this level it's clear for me , it's about later, with the lesson from Joe.

i understand the concept, but i never think soloing in this way, so it's new for me wink.gif

Edit #1

this is a A minor scale ! right ? or C major

Edit #2

this is my take

Cheers

Laurent

Posted by: Gabriel Leopardi Mar 23 2017, 02:17 PM

Hi mate, great job!

I can see how you are following the chords with its triads and you are also adding some other notes from C major scale as passing notes. We are definitely on the right track.

In order to continue developing this, and getting more and more familiar, I recommend you to try over a new backing that includes more chords. This is my suggestion:

Posted by: fzalfa Mar 23 2017, 08:08 PM

Thanks Gabriel

to be sure about triads

G B D

C E F

F A C

and

D F# A

right ?

Edit #1

in this way ?

Laurent

Posted by: Gabriel Leopardi Mar 25 2017, 05:35 PM

Hi Laurent, C is not right, it's: C E G

However, you seem to be play it correctly while improvising. That's a good first vid mate, good job! Keep going.

Posted by: fzalfa Mar 25 2017, 07:55 PM

Hi Gabriel

This was a typographic error.... F is near G ! biggrin.gif

Do i done another take to proof the concept ? do you wait something special ?

Laurent

Posted by: Gabriel Leopardi Mar 27 2017, 05:33 AM

Ah ok! I see! Yes, another take to get more familiar with the concept would be a good idea. What about to have it in 3/4 days?

I prefere to work slowly as possible to decompose the chords with all the notes played as well i can.

Hi mate!

Thanks for sharing the transcription. There are some concepts that you've could analyse from there:

- Key / Tonality
- Major 7th chords
- Minor 7th chords
- Dominant chords
- m7b5 chords
