well, i have problems with playing a whole scale really fast. Its because i do not feel comfortable with going from one string to another - it feels like my hand movements are to tiny, to small....

Well anyway, i was browsing youtube, trying to find an answer to my problem, and i found this lesson:https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2EPTaLwqO9g

He sais that alternatepicking should be done by only move ur hand, and having your fingers straight (except for the ones that holds the pick). He said that a lot of his students tend to only move the fingers that holds the pick (watch the movie to get more insight) making them push at each other - back and forth.

i´ve tried this advice with the hand movement and the fingers straight - but to be onest - ITS STILL UNCOMFORTABLE!

What should i do?

uncomfortable stuff gets comfortable. i move more at the elbow than the wrist. depends on your style of play. you do not have to extend your fingers, i do, but for example, Muris does not. But you definitely dont do it by moving pick fingers independently.

edit: for anyone who says do it with wrist, not elbow, I have one word in advance response, Batio. Maybe if I were some whacky metal head who constantly did that routine, I might use the wrist more. but I never have any elbow issues. maybe I change to more wrist someday if I feel the need, but dont at this point.

ye, thx for posting. But i feel more comfortable when i pick by pressing my pick fingers back and forth. Its hard for me to notice the different with this technique and the wrist one....

or is the finger movement the same thing with the wrist one?

well, but you will get used to stuff like this. when I first came here I held my pick with thumb and two fingers. now as extreme metal pick hold as out there, just bare tip exposed, nestled in between side of index finger and thumb. was uncomfortable at first, but cant imagine any other way now.

you will never play fast that way, sorry, wont happen. hand has to move pretty much as a unit. just watch instructors here doing AP, and do what any of them do, or just about.

ok, so does that means that my picking finger should be pure still. Not moving or anything like that, only the wrist?

the motion is driven by pivot at wrist or arm. i do arm. some do wrist. some say you should do wrist. fingers do move to find position, a little, or tilt, but driving force is pivot at wrist or arm, not the fingers.

practice on one place, and just use hand motion. to get the feel for it. tremolo picking, like a mandolin.

You should try to learn all the different ways to be honest. Sometimes a certain picking style will give you a feeling or tone you desire. I do all different kinds of AP..i change the angle of the pick...i move the angle of my arm. I move closer to the bridge farther away from the bridge. Wrist, arm, finger movement. Sometimes combinations of them.

It really is in your best interest to learn them all. It all depends on what kind of sound you want. Let me give an example.

Paul gilbert likes to use his wrist, and he holds the pick 90 degrees down, he likes to hear the popping of the pick. Me personally i hate all that pick noise. I hold my pick completely backwards from Paul. Imo it gives me more control of the picking dynamic.

There is only one pro that i know of that picks like i do..that Herman Li from dragonforce. I hold the pick backwards from most shredders...there is only one instant where i turn the pick the other way and thats when i do sweeping techniques. So i am constantly turn the pick angle over when doing AP and sweeping.

Daniel

ok thx, but if my goal is to shred metal and stuff like that. To play scales REAAAAALLLY fast and still be comfortable in my playing, then the wrist will do?

Certainly the wrist will do if you practice doing it that way. Personally when going really fast i have more elbow motion then wrist. This not to say that it cant be done with the wrist just that i cant do it that way.

Another thing worth noting here is if you extend your fingers make sure its not slowing you down in some way. For years i played with my fingers extended and i used them as an anchor on the guitar. There were speed barriers i couldnt break for the life of me. Then i noticed some of the fast players had a closed hand, i started closing my hand at first it was very uncomfortable because i was so used to have them extended. Now its second nature i found i got faster because i was actually fighting my own hand because my fingers were anchored to the guitar.

thank u, although when i try to close my hand, not having my fingers extended, i tend to "cheat" because of the moving in my picking fingers. I go back to the bad habbit - making my fingers do the job - the picking and not the wrist.

thx! It´s so annoying because my left hand can play a scale REALLY FAST, but when it comes to the picking, only a tenth of that speed i manage to do, with no control.

This means that you just can't play as fast as you want. It's strange but, the only way to play fast, is to practice slow, and to repeat over and over the same movements. After the "Right Hand Basic" series I' ll start to working on a series called " Hands Synchronization" so...stay tuned!

Just remember- you have to practise these things over and over. Nothing is easier at first- it'll take alot of hard work. Have you watched Kris's speedpicking 101 lesson?

Well you could do both smile.gif

You seem to need the alternate picking motion down because your legato is alot better- so have a look through the alternate picking lessons, lower difficulty stuff. And try and use the metronome if you dont already- its a very useful tool for building up speed when you get an accurate picking motion.

As for scales: why not try and learn one scale? One box a week could be great practise for you smile.gif

So print off the diagram and practise it using the alternate picking motion you will have practised.

It may all seem a little scary but take it a little bit at a time- lots of small goals on the guitar will end up as a big goal accomplished.

thx so much!

But i think it takes a lot more time for me to nail one scale in the speed i am looking for.

Anyway, thanks!
