You can record whatever you want over it. You can go for a short lick, melody, rhythm, chord, noise, or compose a full solo! Let's have fun! smile.gif

We can even do some kind of "https://www.guitarmasterclass.net/guitar_forum/index.php?showtopic=58059&hl=connecting" thing here if it inspires us to have more material!

That's a nice melody, I like it! If that's ok, I would like to play 3-string arpeggios all over this track. It could be a great exercise for what I'm working on in the mentoring thread. I mean, not just for my mechanical skills but also theory. I can't do sweeping yet but I can play this clean smile.gif The tempo is slow, so I should be fine.

Just to make sure: all I have to do is find the notes that build the corresponding chord and make an arpeggio shape of them?

When I'm done, I can try improvising over it too. Sounds like fun! smile.gif

Hi Adam!! Yes! You can go for it! It's a good exercise and it can sound cool! There is an acoustic guitar recorded in this backing track playing arpeggios but another one in a higher register can really work!

I tried to jot down some lyrics which I might try and work into some vocal lines and melodies smile.gif Let me know what you think:

"Once again, we're at the end
It's Christmas time
What did you see, what did you hear,
What did you do throughout the year?
Did you you do the things you love,
some things you'd never heard of?
Did you spent your time with those you hold dear?
I hope you will have the best time of the year!

It's Christmas time!

Somewhere there's a child who never saw a snowy day
Heard the sound of Santa and smiled! Spare him a thought you may!
We're so inclined to fight for all we stand for, all that we think is right
Lay down your guns and halt your war, if only for this one night

'Cause it's Christmas time!

When I was young we used to ice-skate on a nearby frozen lake
A snowball fight seems far away now, there are other things at stake
Your life is your frame of reference, it's what has brought you here
I reckon there's a difference in how we all perceived this year

For some of us it's Christmas time, for some it's just another day
Show love and understanding, your way is not the only way
Put aside all your differences, open your heart for just one night
Unite and become friends, I hope you will find that it's alright

Let's make it a happy holiday!

We can put aside our differences,
Let's unite and become friends!

Make it a happy holiday!
Make it a happy holiday!"

Awesome to see you play that strat man! That melody you have got going is very good.

The main thing that could lift this take further would be your vibrato, and I don't mean you have to learn anything new -

Simply let the notes ring for a while before you add the vibrato - and if there is no time to do that (ie short sustained notes) just skip the vibrato. If you do this your take will sound much more secure and have less of the slightly nervous and pushy Hammet style vibrato.

I am also working on this one and get wait to get recording!

I'll try to focus more on vibrato with those tips you mentioned. I do hate how nervous it usually sounds. It never sounds like that in my head rolleyes.gif

I get the same thing. If I don't consciously think about it - in comes the ghost of Hammet. Especially when I try to squeeze in some slow notes in between shredding - and there is little brain capacity left for thinking about vibrato.

Just noticed this is a in 6/8. Thought it may be worth noting somewhere. I might have missed it though.

Posted by: Caelumamittendum Dec 16 2018, 10:18 PM

Just spent the last 2 hours on this, but it's still rough around the edges, so probably need some more polishing. I feel like it gets better as the song goes on, but at that point I was also warmed up from recording the first half.

I've been a Gibson player for a long time but I can't stop playing my Stratocaster since I've got it. The tone is so addictive, and after playing a lot on Les Paul, I notice that this guitar has refreshed my overall playing.

And I can hear the same in your playing, there is something new in your phrasing and overall playing, that I haven't heard before. Can you note it?

What a nice surprise Cael!! Thanks a lot for this lyrics and cool vocal melodies!!

There is some room to improve tuning in some parts, mostly in the first verse. Feel free to share a new take if you want, if not I can adjust a bit your singing when mixing this one. Your voice sounds great!

I totally know what you mean about going to a strat, I just want to play 'straty' things with a 'straty' tone smile.gif
I dont think there is a better sound than a strat on the neck pickup.

Killer melodies and tone! The only part I would tweak some more is the faster section at ~00:30 where it seems your picking and left hand might not be totally in sync.

Hey friends!! Here I'm sharing some improvisation tips for beginner so everybody gives this one a chance! Let me know if you have any question, and feel free to use this thread to share videos trying these ideas and exercises.

Guitar Pro File:  collab_tips.gp5 ( 5.62K ) : 4

PDF Tabs:  collab_tips.pdf ( 111.92K ) : 7

10 Minutes Jamtrack:  Winter_Collab_10_Minutes_Jamtrack.mp3 ( 14.3MB ) : 9

GUITAR TIP 1: "Simple melody using One Scale Shape"

In this one I show you an example of how much you can do with just a few notes. I'm using only the higher section of the first G Pentatonic Major Shape.

First play the scale up and down over the backing track, and get the feel of each note. Try singing the scale notes while playing so you get familiar with the sounds. Learn my melody, play it over the backing track and then create variations of it. Once you are comfortable and familiar with the sound of the scale, create your own phrases.

If you find this idea useful, try working with other sections from the Pentatonic Major Scale.

GUITAR TIP 2: "Simple melody using One String"

Here I show a melody played only using first string. This type of vertical playing is usually very cool to get more melodic solos, close to what a singer would do.

These are the notes from G major scale on 1st string:

Learn the notes, play them up and down, sing along with the sounds, and try your own melodies!

GUITAR TIP 3: "Simple melody using Triads"

This one is a bit trickier because I'm following the backing track chords with triads. What does it mean? It means that I play G triad when G is sounding, then switch to C triad when C is sounding, and so... This needs a lot of attention but the results are amazing!

These are the triads that I'm using.

G Triad:

C Triad:

Am Triad:

D Triad:

Em Triad:

Practice following the chords playing notes from the triads, once you can do it smoothly, try creating melodies focusing on these notes.

It sounds great Kris!! Killer sustain and harmonics in the beginning. There are lots of great phrases and killer shred passages. It will be tricky to decide which things go and which ones not for the final mix!

I'll have to quit this. I'll do the collabs as exercise for mentoring thread but I won't make it before deadline, so don't wait for me with the final mix. Actually, I don't feel like touching a guitar at all right now and it will probably stay this way for a while.

Hi Adam! I'm surprised of this message! Remember that you can share even one lick here to be part. It's not something serious, we are having fun here! (While learning / practicing!).

Let's talk about the lack of motivaton at the mentoring thread!

Mate, we all go through periods when playing the guitar doesn't feel right.

Just like Gab, I would say try to just play around over the backing for fun - don't feel that you need to deliver something special, play better than anyone else , etc. Good stuff comes from having fun with music, and sometimes just three notes can be more inspiring than anything else!

Hi Phil, yes! This kind of melodic stuff works great over this backing track. Your phrasing and note choices is very tasty here. If you ask me, the only thing that I would work here is dynamics, and maybe bending and vibrato, to give this one more feeling. That's only if you have more time, if not, let's go for this one!

Thanks mate!! No more excuses!! smile.gif

Great job mate!! Your take is very creative and the overal solo sounds fresh to me. Cool use of whammy bar and other techniques. I like how your solo evolves and has different sections. Is this an improvisation or composed solo?

Thanks for taking the time to record a take for this one! smile.gif

GREAT!!

Just toyed with a few ideas and stuck to this composition , when I'm coming up with ideas
I create a rough idea of what I need to play and sometimes play it differently to what I originally
Wanted, the mid section of the song like the volume swells were improvised .

GREAT stuff Adam! Both ideas sound very musical. I'll work on the mix to make them go perfect together. When using two guitars playing on the same part of the neck, it's essential to make the perfect mix so both guitar go well mixed.

Thanks a lot!!

I don't even know if this is usable anyway sad.gif I just listened to the individual tracks and at several parts you can hear the backing track, despite me wearing (closed) headphones to hear the backing track. I think it's because the ear pads have come loose a bit.

This also means I can't really provide takes without the backing bleeding through to the vocal mic. Use what you can from it smile.gif

Posted by: Todd Simpson Jan 6 2019, 09:57 AM

Thanks smile.gif It's about as far away from my usual shreddy bits as I could get. I wanted to try to push it to the other extreme. To see how little gain/dist I could use, ended up being none, and then still use palm muting. So you are spot on about the compressor smile.gif It's basically a clean amp patch with chorus/compressor/delay on coil split neck pickup. Tone turned out spiff! Not a tone I use very often. Nor a style I play in very often. But it's good to push one's own boundaries smile.gif

It's an OVERLOUD TH3 patch using the LYNCH amp on the clean channel. Probably the most basic patch I've ever used.

Egad!! Sorry about that. I should have figured that there was a shreddy spot saved for me smile.gif I started out doing my usual thing but as I listened to the track, my solo just seemed to draw too much attention to itself and away from the track which is a very spiff track. So I thought I"d try something that worked with the track instead of against it. I hope it still works?

SURE!! smile.gif It's a very simple patch, just four bits. Probably the smallest TH3 patch I've ever made. I'm using the GEORGE LYNCH amp on this which is not what one usually thinks of for clean bits, normally I'd use the AC30 type vibe but I wanted it a pinch more aggressive. With the compressor, it helps the note choice cut through even when playing very softly. Add a pinch of delay an bam!! XMAS TONE!!!!

Posted by: Todd Simpson Jan 8 2019, 06:12 AM

I LOVE TH3!!! Still use TH2 as well. I've tried every plugin I can get my hands on and overloud still has the best one imho. Dual signal paths, as many fx as you want, in any order you want, etc. It's impossible to go back to plugins that are restrictive after being spoiled by overloud smile.gif it's hard for me to go back to my hardware processor!!! There is no hardware processor on earth that allows the kind of tonal flexibility that overloud lets you have. Even the brand new AXE FX which is amazing, still has limitations that overloud just doesn't have. The new line 6 boards, killer they may be, have the same issue. Not to mention, it' runs in real time (no perceptible audio lag) and let's you re amp on the fly, also in real time, at any point in the process. I keep trying gear/plugins, keep going back to the greats.

Yeah! It's been tricky to find the right place for everything. There was a lot of great stuff. I had to edit a bit lyrics and some of the longer solos but I've tried to give this a more "guitar colllab" style with longer solos and participation.

Thanks for your beautiful feedback Phil. I've really enjoyed working on this collab. I started with the basic chords, drum loop, bass, then synth arrangements, but the most amazing part was to find the right place for each of your submits, and edit the different backing track sections to give it a nice evolution.

Your solo is a very nice intro, very melodic, and with a perfect tone. Congrats on being part of the first collab with that amazing guitar! It seems that it brings lots of inspiration.

Keep on the nice work!

WOW!!! Best Xmas Jam Ever IMHO!! This had to be a monster of a tune to put together. Honestly, you create miracles with these. Getting everyone's solo to match, to sound like it is all part of the same song, to transition smoothly, to work as a cogent piece of music instead of just a string out of everyone's solo, it's just amazing. It takes enormous talent to put something like this together. Having the ear to slot everything in just perfectly and have it all work is something that is beyond difficult. Well done.
Super well done to everyone on their solos as well!! It all works. It sounds intentional. It works as a piece of music instead of just being a series of solos. SUPER CONGRATS EVERYONE!! Especially BEN for the Killer Vocal track!!!

Might be my first collab ever where I'm on a clean channel and not shredding. One for the books!Todd

Your part on this song is epic. I love the energy of that first bend, it's very expressive and this feeling keeps all along the solo. It's one of the most emotive parts of the song, and it's a good intro for Kris killer solo. Thanks for your amazing work!

Your playing was incredible Kris and please don't take offence from me commenting, I know I'm not really a good player so shouldn't really critique you but I have watched you develop a hell of a lot since I joined GMC, I used to joke with you on the Sunday afternoon chat about restraining yourself, you hadn't used to be able to do it, you was always like a greyhound out of the gate, very very tasty shredding but you struggled to hold back, now you can do it. Nice one buddy.

Thanks for your comment Todd! I love your submit for this one. The first part is more like an arrangement which is always necessary in this type of collabs, and the second a very tasty and simple solo that interacted amazingly well with Phil's solo. That answer and question part at the end done by you both is one of my favourite.

THIS POST IS FOR EVERYBODY HERE:

On a side note, I had to take some decisions when doing this one and I would like to know your opinion about each of these things so it helps me as feedback for the next collabs.

- I've tried to combineand edit takes the less possible. I've tried to respect the discourse of your solos.

- I had to cut a bit some of the longer solos to avoid making this one too long. However, there are really amazing bits of music that are not on this one. For example, Kris solo was around 4 minutes (I think) and all parts were brilliant. Some others have been cut as well. What do you think? Would you like to see even longer tracks with longer solos or the current structure is nice to hear?

- Cael's lyrics were around 2 or 3 times longer. Once again, I felt bad cutting some sections, but I was thinking that maybe the overall tune would be easier to watch until the end with the current structure.

- As we had a lot of material, I only recorded myself playing rhythm guitar and a very short lick.

Let me know your thoughts about all this since it helps me to keep on improving our collabs! smile.gif

I really enjoyed your mix, Gabriel. I knew from the start that I had written lyrics and performed something that was around 4 minutes long and that not all of it would be included. In all honesty it was maybe 2 hours of work in total at most, so I did not feel bad about it. It's a community project and we give some and we take some.

Maybe it could be interesting to make a topic/post/youtube playlist with all the individual files/videos available for both us and outsiders. That also gives an even better perspective on what goes into this smile.gif

I like this idea. anybody else? The only problem is that note all the students uploaded the take to youtube, and maybe, if they did it but then deleted, the playlist becomes incomplete.

I find this format to be MUCH more enjoyable to listen to overall. Personally, I find it more satisfying to hear my part cut and fit better with the context of the song.

Maybe the individual videos could be uploaded to the GMC channel so that they don't get deleted?

Great collab guys, everyone's playing was ace and seemed to fit the song perfectly.
Extra thanks to Gab for sorting it all out with the backing track, mixing and the editing that went into this great finished project.

I have no problem with only parts or even one part of my solo being used as long as it serves the song that's all that matters to me.

Better to keep people wanting more than getting too much wink.gif

About the collab format -

I think a well edited/arranged format with just a selection of each take is usually much more pleasing on the ears - I can listen to it many more times.

However an "uncut" arrangement is good for progress I think, because there's lots of power in recording yourself and sharing with the world. When sharing, you tend to listen and analyse your playing with a different perspective, which is great for progress. Also, if you are lucky you can get some constructive feedback.

I couldn't agree more! Watching the recorded vids can be really embarrassing but it's also a great way to improve. Much better than pretending the problem doesn't exist. It's like avoiding the weighing machine knowing it would show you bad results that mean you should lose some weight. And believe me, I know a lot about it laugh.gif

I've made some solid progress lately (since joining GMC). I learned a lot and eliminated some bad habits already thanks to your feedback. But I'm also watching my old videos and I found a few things on my own that need improving (like learning to stress the right notes).

It's hard to say how much I'll improve over this year but I'll give it my best to submit better stuff for the next Christmas! wink.gif

Personally, I think you did an amazing job deciding what to keep and what to cut. Only a musician can make these kinds of cuts IMHO and make them well. I've heard/seen many collab vids on youtube that could have used a better job on the edit. If one doesn't keep the song moving, it all falls apart. IT's similar to editing a movie/tv show. Every edit should move the story forward. I'm sure we have all seen very bad tv/movies that could have used a pair of scissors.

Deciding what to cut is just as important as deciding what to include. Just like a guitar solo is made worse/better by the notes left out just as with the notes left in.
We could not ask for a better editor. You know everybody involved and you know all of our playing styles. So you know where to put what in order to match it best with the backing and yield a great musical experience.
Todd
