GMC Forum _ Bands and Guitarists _ The Best Dead Guitarist/ Musician

Posted by: Justin Myrick May 12 2011, 12:46 PM

Many musicians have left us one way or another. I thought it would be interesting to see who you all thought was the best DEAD guitarist/ musician. Here are a couple of my favorites:

It doesn't just have to be a guitarist (singer, drummer, clarinet'er, keyboardest,).

it's to subjective to me, in my opinion there isn't a best! only great influences on certain areas of music

Fair enough. My response to that would be: who would you want to see if in concert if they were still alive?

mine would probably one of the more recent losses, Gary Moore, I really wanted to go see him in concert one day.

Shawn Lane is my first thought smile.gif

Chuck Schuldiner, my mind trembles at the possibility of what could have been had this man progressed further into music. Death, was brilliance, and I think Control Denied lay on the same path.

Jimi Hendrix & Kurt Cobain.

Being from the Southern United States (Georgia Just above Florida) It's been gratifying to see Chuck and Death become more and more appreciated over the years. To see Florida Metal have such a large influence over the progression of Heavy music all over the world has been great to watch. I honestly thought Death would be a foot note given their lack of popularity in the states but it's great to see that talent makes it's way in to culture even if it takes some time.

It's very sad that he died so young. The same can be said for Hendrix, Dimebag. All were taken far to soon.

I also like Cobain. He was definitely on my list. It seems like all these greats seem to "check out" around 27. sad.gif

For a second I thought this thread was about the Grateful Dead blink.gif

Alrighty here we go. I had to put a few days of thought into it because their are so many greats that would have been deemed worthy to see based on the skills regardless of the genre. I'm going to choose someone who is still living but no longer plays due some complications and that would be Jason Becker.

yeah! there are many talented musicians who died at the age of 27.

I would've loved to see Dimebag in concert

We have certainly lost many great musicians. A big one for me was John Bonham as it marked the end of Zeppelin and the loss of one of the greatest drummers in rock music... ended an era really IMHO.

On a more personal note one that most effected me was the loss of Ronnie Drew the founder of The Dubliners a few years ago. I grew up listening to The Dubliners with my grandfather and he was actually friends with Ronnie when they were wee lads smile.gif We were both fans of the original line up with Luke Kelly who is to me one of the greatest folk singers ever, and his passing was a huge loss to celtic music IMHO. I have many fond memories of singing along to their songs with my grandfather. Ronnie and my grandfather passed away on the same day.

The Dubliners (Ronnie singing) and The Pogues

Luke Kelly singing one of my faves

John Bonham
Ronnie Van Zant

There is a bunch of past away musicians that would be awesome to hear live: Robert Johnson, SRV, Hendrix, Lennon, Johnny Cash... All legends, and may they rest in piece.

Posted by: Qenzoz May 22 2011, 01:40 PM

Bon Scott, Jimi Hendrix, Randy Rhoads, Dimebag Darrel, John Bonham and I'd love to see Jason Becker too even tho hes not dead, but he has ALS so yeah tongue.gif
