Hi guys, i've been playing guitar for 14 months now, and play for about 1-2 hours per day, just to get a perspective on things, for someone who's been playing as long and often as me, what kind of stuff should I be able to play? like any ideas of songs or techniques etc. I mainly listen to metal (trivium, metallica, megadeth etc)

you have my thanks.

There isn't really a meter for what you should be able to play, it depends on what you've been practicing, how you have been practicing, it also depends on you, some people need more time to learn a certain technique while others can learn very fast.

I have been playing guitar for 14 moths also (but only electric guitar since christmas), and i also listen a lot to metal but also blues.

Well, songs? if you can play Ac/Dc - Back in black or Nirvana - Smells like teen spirit that would be fine at this point i guess smile.gif

I have been playing Pavel's "Heavy metal for beginners" series a lot, and i have been playing "Megadeth style" and "thrash metal 1" by Gabriel a lot and a bit of "Metal Octaves" and "tremolo picking" by Toni ..
I like rhythm guitar most, and if you do too, good tecniques at this stage is PowerChordSlide and Gallop rhythm tewnique and other basic rhytm teqnicues like that. I play most rhythm part at a BPM about 100-110. and speedpicking (which i have also been practicing a bit) at 80 BPM

I agree with Iluha, it really depends on what you practice. I have been playing for about 1 year (I played for about 1 year 14 years ago as well) and I have really practiced more technique than actual songs, so I now find I am able to learn songs with alternate picking and some faster/complicated stuff much easier because I have focused on technique. The consequence to that focused practicing is my theory and song writing abilites are quite weak. For me personally, as long as I'm having fun and enjoying playing that is most important.

If you're still playing every day, then I think you're doing just fine smile.gif

Personally, I've been playing 17 months, and I'm able to play all of Metallica - One to speed, including solos (though they're still a little rough around the edges. Definitely couldn't stand in for Kirk Hammet >< ) I can also play Sweet Child O' Mine - Guns N Roses, and just last week I've started Thunderhorse - Dethklok. It's much easier to pick up songs and play them faster because of all the techniques and drills I've learned here at GMC. You also have to realize that when I started those first two songs, it was in September 07, and only now am I comfortable enough in saying I can actually play them.

From my experience I have realized that us beginning guitarists need to just continue to do what we are doing. If we are practicing seriously, and putting in over an hour a day, just continue that and you will eventually be able to play alot more than you know currently. Like previously mentioned, the techniques that we learn here at GMC enable us to learn new material more quickly than if we were just learning songs all day long. I only recently started to learn whole songs, and believe me, I feel like I am years ahead of where I should be after just over 2 years of playing. Of course... Thats almost 2 years of being with GMC, so I have focused primarily on technique. Keep playing as much as you can, and learning as much as you can, and let time do its job. We wont become monsters overnight, it is a slow and steady process that requires the discipline of a Samuri! Happy Picking!
