GMC Forum _ News (David) _ It Finally Happened... I'm Burned Out...

Posted by: David Wallimann May 19 2009, 08:55 PM

Hi guys!
Just wanted to explain why I haven't been very active here this past month.
I'm getting burned out folks. Don't get me wrong, I love music still but since I chose to do music as a living, I slowly lost the pleasure I once felt on the instrument.
I'm sure it will come back though!
I just need some time off I think from teaching. It's hard to manage teaching at GMC (which rocks of course!), teaching my regular students locally, and finishing up some recording projects as well.
Anyways, just wanted to explain why I've been a little quiet.
I'll be back refreshed after a little break though! :-)

Take it easy, take care and don't push yourself over that threshold you're getting close to!
Enjoy your rest, think of other things. We want to back in one piece smile.gif

Hi David! Even though I currently don't have a subscription due to lots of real life stuff going on, I just wanted to post a quick note that I've really enjoyed just listening to your lessons, and I hope you'll come back refreshed and with the same enthousiasm as the lessons you currently posted!

Take your time man. I am sure you can rock again soon smile.gif

Posted by: berko May 20 2009, 12:06 AM

I can even appreciate the fact that you admit such a thing. You're making a living out of music and you still confess that it can still go on your nerves. That's wonderful attitude and I'm 200% sure you'll regain yourself in no time...

... for our benefit as well ph34r.gif

Deep Inside the Mind is currently on heavy "rotation" in my ipod

David, you have been an inspiration to myself and others - you deserve some quiet time, so just chill and come back even stronger!

Posted by: UncleSkillet May 20 2009, 02:48 AM

David, I have always loved your playing, lessons, collabs and the friendship / help that you have offered me .

It's kind of funny because I decided to take a break myself to, so when I read your post it made me feel better. smile.gif Thanks for that! We all need a break at some point!

I know you will be back soon, stronger and with great ideas of how to make us all better players.

Enjoy your time off bro! Everyone needs a vacation right? wink.gif

I'm doing the same thing myself. Every one burns out sooner or later.....no matter how much they love something. You'll know when it is time to come back. Music should be fun....even if it is your job. tongue.gif laugh.gif

Posted by: JVM May 20 2009, 03:04 AM

Come back soon David. Like a lot of us, I just came back from a bit of a break myself.

Posted by: JamesT May 20 2009, 03:14 AM

Just to let you know David, I'm working on a bunch of your lessons right now... Satch Style Lydian Scale, Satriani Melodic Rock, Mixolydian Fun, You Shall Start Like You End, and Take Control of Your Whammy. You're an inspiration, and your playing is phenomenal. Take a nice long break, as long as it takes, but when you come back, you'll be better than ever and ready to KICK SOME SERIOUS ROCK!!! biggrin.gif smile.gif

Completely natural David as others have said. We all burn out on things in life and need a break. Think if you were a construction worker or worked in a factory, burned out or not, you still would have to go to work to pay the bills.

You are a true class my friend and a great musician and I wish you well in your ventures. Do keep in mind that it is times like these when we are burnt, feel beaten down, that we rise above and perform at our best.

I'm confident that in a week or so you you will be full throttle! smile.gif

Cheers man,
Steve

Hope to see you back soon mate!

Thanks a lot for the responses guys!
I canceled all my students next week, should be a nice break.
Sometimes sanity is better than getting a paycheck I think! :-)

It will do you good David smile.gif
You're right about that, money isn't everything!

Hope you come back relaxed and perhaps even inspired. What I do sometimes with a reaserch project is to put it aside for a while (if that is logistically possible). If you come back to it after a while you see it totally different and go for it with new drive. So distance sometimes is a inspiration

Sorry to hear this David! sad.gif

You are an hard working person and you definitely deserve a break...no doubt about it! I am sure your students prefer to wait one week to get a sharp instructor instead of a tired one.

Posted by: Ivan Mihaljevic May 20 2009, 10:16 PM

It does happen from time to time...
We're not machines and we all need a break sometimes!

Posted by: Oxac May 20 2009, 10:42 PM

Make sure to show up every now and then, posting something or creating a nice little video just so that we know you're alive and kickin'!

I would give some advice, but I am a single man living alone with 8 cats and a dog, with the grass in my front yard high enough for the cats to hide in. I am not the first person people generally come to for advice.

i know how it feels to work with something the entire day, and then getting home and doing MORE of the same kind of work.. but now only as a hobby..

come back when you are ready..

Posted by: playaxeman May 20 2009, 11:35 PM

Sorry to hear this David.

Your personal health is much more important than a lesson, although i like your lessons very much, but you know what i am trying to say.

You have been pretty productive; looking at all what you have done.

But don't take a burn out too easy; it is a serious.

Go for a medic who has experience with this to give you the best advice you need in this situation.

I hope you will recover soon.

God Bless

Take your time to relax and enjoy this week! Probably live students delivers most "tiresome" experiences.

Posted by: fused Nov 29 2009, 01:41 AM

I burned out on the guitar once. I didn't do as you did, I just kept on going. I refused to take a break until it wasn't fun anymore. THEN I put the guitar away for a long time. Its back now, but if I could have done it over, I would have taken a break when I first recognized the symptoms.

Take a break. Do it now or later may be too late.

And on another note, I just clicked the wrong button on one of your lessons. Still trying to get this new interface under control.
It was a button to rate a lesson.... Yeah, ignore the none vote on that one. Thats not what I meant to click.
Your lessons have always been excellent on all fronts. This new interface isn't, but your lessons are smile.gif

Hang in there buddy. We'll be here when you decide to return smile.gif

Haha!
That little burnout happened about 6 months ago guys.
Only lasted about a week. I was just teaching too much, but all is good now! :-)

Glad to see you're OK now David, I was reading the topic yesterday, and wondered if you didn't have a second burnout case, cause I remember this thread a long time ago wink.gif

Posted by: Hammerhead Dec 8 2009, 02:34 AM

Well David,
I think you're back now... which is great! If you ever need to take another break and you want support.... just reply to this old topic!!! It's a good reminder to all of us, music (and life) should be full of joy!!! If not stop and regroup! cool.gif
