Hi all,

I'l building a pedalboard, so far I got a wah, tuner, distortion & delay. A chorus is joining the family soon, and with that I guess I'll be set, the pedalboard doesn't have much space left laugh.gif

What I'm missing there is reverb, but so far I've been using my delay stomp with a short delay time and it pretty much sounds like a reverb, so I think I don't actually need it having the delay, what do you guys think? Anyone else using the delay for reverb purposes too?

I prefer delay than reverb. That's totally different type of effect but can produce similar thing. Sometimes I mix 20% of reverb with much more delay and I get pretty good mixture. If you think it sounds good then go for it. Reverb is mostly used on acoustic guitars or electric with the clean sound. With vocals it's used almost always. If you overdo it then your sound gets messy especially in the whole band. Delay has much cleaner definition but also shouldn't be overdone. I could live without the reverb if I have delay.

Sometimes I use a short delay rather than reverb. Depens on the music.

A delay is always better than a bad reverb... idk... some bad reverbs make the guitar sound wobble.
So no need for a reverb if you can make use of a delay instead, I'm quite fond of any good reverb though and that's why I also keep a reverb pedal. The downside is that the are rather expensive.

I agree with Emir (and Micke) - a short perhaps tempo synched delay on lead, especially distorted lead does the same job as reverb in that it thickens the sound and adds depth, and if its a stereo delay it adds stereo width to the sound field (as does reverb) - those are all good things. For lead again, of the two, delay does a cleaner job and makes mixing (live or in the studio more easy).

The opposite is true for clean sounds - delay can sound strange unless you are going for that very exact sound - reverb on the other hand unobtrusively thickens etc.

So my rule is : delay for distorted lead, reverb for acoustic or clean electric. Not hard and fast of course but a decent starting point!

Taking this in two parts:

1) Delay as reverb. It can cover some aspects but not all not least as a delay will not produce the complicated reflected patterns of a reverb. In a live situation a delay may well be good enough if you get, in particular, the pre-delay setting sorted.

2) Reverb in a dry mix - lots of individual reverbs will more often than not sound a mess. Where lots of instruments need reverb put a single instance on the main stereo out rather than letting everyone have their own reverb cool.gif .

3) Reverb live - as 2) but also pay close attention to the acoustics of where you're playing smile.gif .

I like to use both effects together when I can, but if I had to choose between them, I'd go for a delay on distorted leads, and a reverb for clean tones smile.gif

I like to add space live with delay as well. Reverb will muddy up the tone most of the time when used, so I use it only for changing the tone coloration and effects mostly.

However my EHX Stereo Memory Man Hazarai has a pretty decent reverberation effect, it can be applied between the echoes (the blend into one another), or as a full blown vintage style reverb. Digital, but good sounding live.
