Hey,

Thinking about getting a new guitar, got several strats but I'm really into shred these days so was thinking of getting either a strat with a scalloped neck or an ibanez, like a gem or something.

I don't really know anything about Ibanez guitars, it's quite confusing with their names being numbers rather than model names (like RG450 or whatever rather than a name). Which are the best bang-for-buck ibanez guitars for shred style (vai, satriani, malmsteen etc.)?

what do you mean? RG stands for Road Gear lol.

numbers go in order...the low there number, the lower end it is...the higher the number, the better it is

RG120 is low RG550 is high

if it has a "DX" at the end it it, it means it has sharktooth inlays....and usually the 2 letters that the end tell you the finish or something you unique about it like "QM" stands for quilted maple.

Best bang/buck? Probably a GIO. Very cheap and already pretty good. But if you are talking about the JEM etc. I think that's simply not your price segment. So you should mention the amount of buck if you want to get a useful answer.

Well I was looking for between 500 and 600 of our english pounds (roughtly $1000-$1200USD).

Pickups aren't the most important thing for me, because they're easy to change for me, so long as the construction and hardware are good then it'd be fine. Something that I can hammer the tremolo arm on without it going out of tune easily would be a big advantage. I imagine the cheaper models have problems with this?

I think RG got some models that are really cool and "cheap".

But you could try a JS model, they are not so far away (money talking).

Hrm, just checked out the JS100 online, looks OK, about the right money. Only thing I didn't like on the spec list for it is the basswood construction - I had a Dean baby ML which was basswood, it was really soft and didn't feel very sturdy. Dunno if that was just the one I had or is this a general problem with basswood?

Definitely try out the JEM-models from Ibanez. They should fit in your price range (atleast used ones will, maybe even some of the new ones)

You should really try out some Ibanez models at some guitar store. Personally, I'm weak for the RG neck... It just slided into my hands perfectly! It's the only Ibanez I've tried though, so I can't know for sure if the rest of them have the same deal tongue.gif

5 years ago I bought an RG321MH for about $500. It's been the best guitar I've ever played to date. So good, I bought a second one. They go for about $300 nowadays, which is another reason why I bought the second.

Take a look at my avatar, very nice natural wood finish. Great guitars.

OH and its a fixed bridge, in case you were wondering but they do make models similar with a floyd rose aswell.

Being a diehard Ibanez fan/ Jem owner I would definatly say go with a Jem if you can fork out the money for it, but if you can't I would say go for an RG, I've plenty of RG's that shred just as easy as my Jem.

It's really wonderfull that you're going for a Ibanez guitar.

I myself have an Ibanez guitar from the prestige series. I think a RG1527. But a fine guitar. Plays really well. I should say try it out. I bought it a few years ago for say 1350€ = 1,743.66 USD here in Belgium. It's expensive, but worth it!!

But I think, the prices are lower now, haven't checked it yet.

Tried out the RG1570, it was very nice! Think I'm gonna grab one at the end of the month when I get paid. Can't wait!

Wasn't keen on the stock pickups in the one I tried, but I can always change those out. The neck felt perfect, and I like having the 24 fret neck. The tremolo will take some getting used to (never had a floyd rose) but I was very impressed with it's ability to keep in tune.

Definantly gonna get an ibanez now!

Try out the RG2610, yeah, only 1 pickup.... but I didn't buy it to play jazz tongue.gif It's got a stock Duncan Full Shred pickup (TB-10) I think.

Plus mine has the Edge Pro bridge, which I don't think the 1570 has (but I could be wrong). It's not any worse than a floyd to set up, and you'll tune it about once a month, even if you play everyday.
