Hi,

This one I think it's influenced by the playing of Steve Morse.
The Morse Code

How do you rate his playing?

In both vids he needs to tune his guitar better. I can't really get past that.
Potential. He just needs some basic guidance.

I enjoyed it smile.gif He is clearly putting in some practice time. Good vibrato and overall performance I'd say. It could be that his guitars are not intonated or not tuned properly but I keep hearing bits that sound just a pinch out of tune. I notice he initiates a lot with upstrokes but that comes down to personal preference really. His picking has is just a pinch stiff but his vibrato is quite good as is his hand synch. Looks like he's been playing for a few years at least. Thanks for the share! smile.gif Do you know this guy?

I agree with Ken and Todd about the tuning problem. From my point of view, knowing how to tune properly the guitar, is the basic thing that everybody should learn first.

I like his composition from the first video (The Morse Code). The musical idea sounds nice but...his playing sounds too square for my taste. I feel a lack of details and ornaments in his playing. Also the fact that he picked almost all the notes....to be honest...it's never a good idea to do this. Unfortunately, from what I see (I saw the last videos posted by Trooper), he still kept the same habits over the years.

Dynamics and articulation are critical for me. The ability to bring nuances into your playing it's highly important and makes a huge difference between players.
Applying all these things, it's what create a good connection with the listener.
You know, I always keep in mind a wise thing that my instructor (Darius Wave) told me: " Remember that it doesn't matter what you feel while you play - it matters what is the audible dynamics range". wink.gif

I agree with everything that Todd, Ken and Monica said here. The cool thing is that his composition is interesting so now he should focus on basics, and expressing techniques in order to make it sound more convincing.

I don't only thing that he needs tune or calibrate his guitar, he needs to work on vibrato, alternate picking, dynamics, bending, and why not, polishing his guitar tone.

I can hear Morse/Purple vibes here...

By the way, why are you asking Victor?

No, I don't know this guy personally.
He is a professional guitar player in a metal band from Romania(the country where I live) called Trooper.
It's a band influenced mostly by Iron Maiden and Judas Priest.
This guitar player is one of the main founders of the band Trooper.

Yes, this song called "Morse Code" is inspired by Deep Purple and Steve Morse.

I am asking this because I like to take an in depth look at guitar playing, analyzing the style and to get a better understanding of music.

I think most people won't notice those details. How can one improve if his ears will not notice the details?

I will share 2 other songs from the band. I like the guitar in those.
Trooper they are singing in Romanian, I think it will be interesting to hear a language that is different for you.

Let me know what you think.

I like it wink.gif I think his playing works better in a band context than under a microscope. The music is straight ahead rock/metal and benefits from his style imho. It's not overly complicated nor does it have subtle dynamics changes that would require the skills that are not his forte. He's found a band where he fits in well. When playing by oneself, without a band, the play needs to be a bit more impressive in terms of variation/dynamics/subtle control and technique. Not so much the case in a hard rock band where things are much more aggressive and linear play works well. They have a good Metal groove to them!

There are many things that will help you to train your ears. It can take many ears to be able to identify the things that we are marking here, but I think that you are on the right track by asking and getting curious about this. These are some tips to train your ear:

- Use any ear training app for diary practice. (Learn to identify intervals, scales, chords).
- Sing the notes while you practice scales (you can sing internally, it's not necessary to sing loudly)
- Play along with your favorite songs.
- Learn melodies and chord progressions by ear.
- Sing along with your favorite singers, and why note, your favorite lead guitarists. Our voice is the best connection between mind and sounds.

Our ears keep evolving and learning songs by ear is one of the most powerful training. Even when learning GMC lessons, I recommend students to start trying to learn the lessons by ear and then checking tabs.

Oddly, for a "professional", he's still got tuning problems on the clean toned parts in video #1.
The rock tune is definitely a lot better.

They are pretty popular in Romania as a metal band, doing concerts and stuff like that.
If you like metal and live in Romania it's unlikely not to know this band.

The band's name comes from the Iron Maiden song "The Trooper"

This song was released in 2002, I feel a strong Iron Maiden influence in this one:

And here the same song was re-recorded in 2019, to be included on a best of album:

Cool! Must have been decent as it made me drool for a flying V 👌

There is some great material here - to me best improvement would be if it sounded more spontaneous and less like it was the 255th time he played it.

That’s a hard thing to do though, which is why I often prefer improvised / spontaneous solos.

It's great to hear Metal bands doing well in other countries. Metal music hasn't been on the charts very much in the states for a while now but we still have a pretty big underground Metal scene and there are still a lot of great bands around. Popular music has drifted back towards very young gals doing dance music, though there is some variation. Still, Metal started in the underground, it will probably be around forever, at least I hope so smile.gif

Looks like these guy have been going for 20 years! That alone is hugely impressive. Thanks again for the share!!
