My main ax is my RG, no doubt. I've been playing in alternate tunings recently so I've been putting a lot of time into the schecter, and despite the neck being fatter, my playing sounds better (unplugged) because what I finally realized is the profile of the frets. The RG has more or less slightly rounded frets but the Schecter has a more squared off face of the fret, and I think that's what's contributing to my more accurate playing and makes me seem to have less fret buzz. I still prefer the thin neck of my Ibanez, but it makes me wonder as I contemplate my next guitar, what other guitars have this same feature? Are jacksons more boxy than Ibanez frets? ESPs? Was planning the next guitar at having fixed bridge w/ an 81. Obviously a hellraiser springs to mind, an ESP Eclipse or LTD EC also enter the picture. But I obviously need to go play them and see.
Also with hellraisers, has anyone tried out the Avenger or tempest models? Is the neck the same as the C1? They're all mahogany w/ maple tops but was curious if the neck profile was different at all. Plus all 3 of my current guitars are super strats 1 with red quilted maple top, 1 with ruby flamed maple top. The hellraiser see thru cherry is too gorgeous to really pass up (esp w/ the abalone binding) so I was thinking about maybe switching up the body style... thoughts?
Also what are the Jackson models to be looking for that have EMG's out of the box? Keep the price down below $1500 USD, I mean I can pull the trigger on an Eclipse, but my playing really doesn't demand having such a high end guitar. Obviously more money in the pocket is always a good thing.
About fret size there's a large number of various sizes. Say you got "Jumbo frets" on both guitars there's still numerous different kinds of jumbo wires where they differ in fractions of a mm regarding width and height. I suspect they can also be filed differently for round or flat tops.
So if you're judging your choise of guitar basen on what frets are on you simply have to try them out to find the right feeling.
If you like thin necks some Jackson models have necks that are even thinner than the general RG's
Yeah I'm looking into a 2nd hand SLSMG on ebay, the ones with passives are right affordable (between 450 and 550 w/ case), but I'm going to hold out for an active and that should give me a chance to make it in and play it in a shop. The RG has the Wizard neck (not the II) but this is 5ply rather than 3 ply, which is supposed to help with the cracking at the nut and warping.
The fret profile out of the factory is always going to be kind of the same, plus I'm looking for a player that's ready to go and wont' need much attention, I don't really want to be bothered filing down frets. But that still has me questioning the profile of the frets. And on the RG and the Shecter alike are "Xtra Jumbo" frets, but the schecter ones seem a hair taller w/ the squared top.
