GMC Forum _ GEAR & PRODUCTION _ So, Whats Your Main Guitar And Amp

Posted by: Britishampfan May 31 2013, 07:09 PM

I`m new here just curious about what people are using to get their sound?

In my into I mentioned I am used a 1974 which is an 18 watt Marshall combo, For the most part it is on my latest rehersal clips but my main amp and one that I gig with is a 1959 Marshall 100 watt superlead and 4/12 with greenbacks.http://s177.photobucket.com/user/Britishampfan/media/BAFamp/l.jpg.html

The superlead is my main amp for giging but for practical purposes not being used at band rehearsals, I should say right now with my current project.

I am a night owl and sometimes only in the wee hours does the writers block lift, thats when I`m using Logic pro and loops and amp sims working on my latest. Running low through the monitors or just head phones. I can play for hours and bother no one which is great.

Sometimes If I need the sound of my superlead I plug into my attenuator, set the attenuator on load using no cabinet and use the line out to my interface, great tube sound, eq and effects to taste, and I`m running my 100watt silently at three o clock in the morning. smile.gif

I am pretty boring and basic in the guitar department, I own a black Les Paul Studio (hate the binding look) and American Standard Strat, I also own and use an Ibanez 8 string.

So what have you guys been up to?

Posted by: WeePee May 31 2013, 08:13 PM

Short answer:

Only amp models via Guitar Rig5.
Guitar is Jackson cow-6

As soon as we move out to better house I'm investing to at least a valve amp.

Nice Marshalls btw !!

Kemper Profiling Amp on an Alto TS115A
Ibanez S-770PB (Standard Tuning)
Ibanez RGD 2127Z (Eb Tuning)

Guitars are both mains for me, I don't go oh I want this or that. More or less what tuning I wish to play in.

As for amps, I kind of like most of the DV Mark Triple 6 amps I've run. They just seem to really cut through a mix when I practice.

Playing my new PRS SE custom 24 which I absolutely love.Amp I am playing through my Blackstar HT5R with a Ibanez TS9 tubescreamer which I am not to happy with right now.Soon I am going to get a Hughes and Kettner Tubemeister 18w head and a custom 2x12 cab.

I really want to get a Marshall but I only play at home and the only Marshall that will probally be quiet enough and sound good will be the Marshall 1w. At £500 to £600 they dont come cheap.

I'm using Gibson Les Paul Studio and Line 6 Pod HD 500 for my lessons at GMC. When I play live, I use the same guitar connected to many pedals (overdrive, phaser, wah wah, volume, delay) and then to my Mesa Boogie Dual Rectifier. My cabinet is a Marshall 1960b 4x12.

Posted by: Britishampfan May 31 2013, 09:46 PM

Very cool gear guys, I also sometimes use Mesa pre-amps in front of my amps but a Marshall 4/12B cab is a huge part of my tone, whatever amp I`m using.

My gigs setup includes a pedalboard :

going to this amp :

Pedalboard gear :

* Crybaby bass way
* Digitech Envelope Filter
* Digitech Driver (overdrive/distortion)
* Markbass Super Booster Pedal (for DI out + boosting/tone shaping features)
* Korg Tuner

Amp : Nemessis NC115 amp - 250w going to 1x15 speaker

Guitar : American Fender Jazz Bass Deluxe

I find this setup very practical and good sounding. It is also relatively easy to carry to the gigs. Amp is powerful but somewhat light, find it lighter then most of the combos I tried. If I would upgrade it, I would add another 2x10 extension cab for better definition and punchy response.

This is my main louder/heavier rig.

I also do a lot of small club gigs.

[attachment=32097:ken_at_DB.jpg]

Various guitars though - I'm not too loyal to any of my girls.

I change it up quite a bit but when I'm playing at home for my own amusement it's usually this '59 Martin

When I play electric I either like a 58-60 Gibson Les Paul Standard or a cool old Fender but I usually always use the old Fender amps.

For most band gigs these days I'm using this modified Traynor Guitar Mate. This amp originally had EL84 output tubes and put our around 15-18w RMS but has been modified with a 1950s Stancor output transformer and now has 6L6 output tubes and a big magnet Jensen 12" speaker. It loud enough for most venues. I used to run an extensive pedalboard but these days I just plug straight into the amp.

http://s13.photobucket.com/user/xs650mike/media/Amps033.jpg.html http://s13.photobucket.com/user/xs650mike/media/Amps041.jpg.html

For bigger venues I use my old standby which is a 1965 Fender Twin Reverb with factory Fender branded JBL D140F speakers. I bought this amp in 1966 from Jerry Garcia of the Grateful Dead and it has long been my mainstay. cool.gif

http://s13.photobucket.com/user/xs650mike/media/Blackie052.jpg.html http://s13.photobucket.com/user/xs650mike/media/Blackie050.jpg.html

For guitars on band gigs I generally take the trio below left, which are (left to right): 1954 Gretsch Country Club (main guitar), 2000 DeArmond Starfire Special (spare) and 1972 Gerlach with sound hole pickup (slide guitar). For solo acoustic gigs my main axe is the re-topped Martin D18 below right. I generally run it through a SansAmp Acoustic DI into the PA and also mic it.

Or I just grab one off the wall. The electric guitars are usually played via s USB interface into My PC using Reaper/VST arrangements.

Yeah, 1982 Yamaha XS650SJ with 750cc big bore kitted engine. Cafe bars. Rear shocks are about an inch taller than stock for more cornering clearance and quicker steering. Stock appearance, below.

I use mostly Hufschmid and Mayones guitars. Got some PRS Santana SE and moded Squier for some jamming and cheap gigs (I mean...when I'm afarid I can loose the guitar - forget, stolen or something tongue.gif ) I also have my custom Bloody Mary with EMG's for drop tunings.

As for the amp I usually use Cornford RH30 with 4x12" custom Clamor cab (2x V30 + 2 x Greenback) + T.C G-major in the effects loop.

If the pub / stage is small I just go with a little H&K Club Reverb combo.

Some stunning guitars posted here!

I mainly play through my Fender Hotrod Deluxe combo switching between Fender Malmsteen strat, American special strat with humbucker, Gibson classic LP, or a Squier vintage vibe telecaster. I play them all reguarly so I guess I don't have a main guitar. Although I have the most history with my LP. I still have a Laney 50 watt head with Marshall 1960 4x12 but don't crank it up too often. smile.gif

I see You got some true classic in Your rig smile.gif Lately I have some strat period - seems like there is nothing like true single coil, 21/22 frets and the neck tone with lower gain but nice treble end...yamiiii:D I don't suppose I'll buy a Fender but I've got a local guy Who makes guitars for fun and his results are amazing comparing to the prices he requests smile.gif If everything goes ok I'll be happy owner of fully made of Ash, no painting (natural) strat for some time.

Currently own a Squier (Korea 1996 Anniversary) quite good comparing to the new ones but I think I'm gonna pull out the hardware and electronics and put itto the new one biggrin.gif

Yea, my tastes have changes over the years. There was a time that I I would not want a Fender strat... but now I really dig the woody tones in the neck and versatility with the tone, volume knobs, and 5-position pickup switch. I actually rather play leads with it over my Les Paul most of the time. I grew up more with more high-octane metal stuff and was always into EMG 81/85 on mid-price ranged ESP and Ibanez's guitars but I felt they always lacked tone when you wanted to dial it down a bit with some mild OD or just a classic blues sound.

The Classic vibe Tele I bought recently with the Alinco III pickups and pine wood body is a very nice guitar. I always had a low opinion of Squier from reputation but was really surprised with this one. The tone is really warm and pleasant in the neck and the bridge is bright and twangy. Sounds like the real deal to me with out the higher price tag. Cosmetically it doesn't look as good as a American Tele but that doesn't bother me too much.

I use a mesa boogie mini rectifier through a mesa 212 closed back cab, really into fenders and gibsons, play mostly my traditional lp, and my fender select strat

Lol yea there all the same, all hss. The only ones I planned on keeping is the brown one with black pick guard, i keep it tuned half step down. and the one shown next to the les Paul, in standard tuning. The other is a 1960 reissue that I got for a really good price used and couldn't pass it up. I'm going to sell it hopefully for more than I payed. I'm going to use the money twords a shecter blackjack sls.

Yea they all do look very similar. When i got them it wasnt really about the color it was more a good deal for a used guitar smile.gif , except for the redish strat i bout that one new. I got my eye on a schecter the black gun metal one or the dark blue. biggrin.gif. I need a more metal guitar.

The Fender amp is not scorched. It's a pretty rare Deluxe. It was made in 1949 and although the TV front Deluxe was made for a few years this one has the horizontal tweed as opposed to the tweed being on a bias, as later ones were.

I bought this one on ebay a few years ago for about $400. It worked fine but had been painted black and had a replaced speaker and grill cloth. I managed to get a lot of the paint off. What looks scorched is just what remains of the black paint.

Im only gonna sell the 1960 strat, keeping all the others smile.gif I think I'm gonna go with schecter cause I wanted a guitar for drop tunings, and I've read a lot of good reviews on schecters and read some history on them, I've played a few and thought they felt and sounded good. I especially like the history schecter has, if anyone one like to check it out here's a short history of the company..http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Schecter_Guitar_Research

I'm most likely gonna set it up a step and a half down, I've never really played guitars that dropped it would be cool if I can use it to occasionally tune further down to "B" and up to drop "C" then back to 1 1/2 down. How would you set this up and what gauge string would you use to be able to play these 3 diff tunings smile.gif

I bought that a long time ago. It's a '73 and it's a really great guitar. I have older Teles and CS ones but this one sounds great. The Pre-1974 ones with the staggered pole pieces and light weight bodies are fantastic guitars. When the poles got flat and they got heavy not so much.

I put the logo on there in maybe 1990. I think I paid $500 for it, which was about what a new American Standard cost at that time.

Bleh, I have more of a budget setup tongue.gif don't kill me please ;o

Amp: Fernandes FA-10 Modified (my little practice amp), and a handmade (by my dad) amp with four huge speakers and built-in overdrive (yeah I don't know how my dad does it, he just makes things that I wouldn't ever think possible).

Effects: Boss DS-1 pedal, Zoom G1N effects processor.

Recording Equipment: VSTs (Guitar Rig 4, Poulin plugins and amplitube among others), REAPER, direct line-in to PC's sound card, regular speakers nothing special.

Guitars:

From left to right:
I don't know what make that guitar is, but I got it used for a pretty cheap price. Plays well for rhythm, but the floyd is unstable on it so no whammy for it.
ESP M-II, my latest guitar and my main for metal/rock biggrin.gif I'm in love with this beauty smile.gif
Handmade, this is my main for anything not metal/rock smile.gif I don't think I can let go off this one. Its pretty heavily modded by myself, I even did all the electronic stuff on it myself.

So yeah, nothing special, but this is my "setup" and it makes me real happy whenever I pick up any of my guitars smile.gif

It's not a story I was expecting but still a cool story. huh.gif It really does look like a burn marking from the picture. How does the sound compare between the two amps?

Not much, $200 I guess tongue.gif

Do you wish for an effects processor or would you be up for raising the budget a bit and get something like this? It's the tube feel in a small package, great price and quality smile.gif No mumbo jumbo effects and all that - just raw tone!

Hell, yes you should mate smile.gif Have you seen the presentation I did for it? Anyway, let me know and as a side note, if you like my tone on the lessons, know that 90% of them are recorded with the AMT SS20 tongue.gif

The blond amp is a Weber 6A20HP kit I built, though I've tweaked the circuit to maximise gain.
It's running a pair of 6L6WGB, put's out about 40 watts clean and nearly 70W overdriven. After it killed the Weber 12F150 (my favourite speaker), I left the speaker out of the combo cab and am using an external cab. This is loaded with my Fluxtone Model 10 http://www.fluxtone-speakers.com/Home_Page.html which I'm really pleased with (the Fluxtone system allows the speaker volume to be turned down to quiet levels, without affecting the interaction between speaker and amp).
The cab has a Mitchell donut foam insert in front of the speaker, to stop the high frequencies being too 'beamy', see http://www.tgpwebzine.com/?page_id=443
The guitar is my 2010 Les Paul R8, which is absolutely fantastic - everything about it is 'right', it was set up really well out of the box. It's the only guitar I've not had to mess with to get the action and electrics sorted.
Out of the picture, the pedals are a Cry Baby, Boss TU2 tuner, Tube Screamer, Home Made Germanium Booster and a home made A/B Box to select which channel is in use.

laugh.gif biggrin.gif Don't think so man, but seriously now, try to get a new one and you will have a worthy tool to work with at a reasonable price for what it can do.

It is cleaner and fatter then the later Deluxe. Not better or worse, just different.

Any idea what model numbers those Deluxes are - maybe 5A3, 5B3? If not, what's their tube line up?
Circuit wise, those early models are pretty similar, so it may be that the tonal difference is due to the speakers.
Have you tried connecting the amp of one to the cab of the other?
Old alnico magnets will have lost some strength 60 years down the line, so that may be why the amp with the newer speaker is louder, especially if it's a ceramic magnet type, as they generally retain their strength much better.
On a safety note, have they had 3 prong power cords fitted?

Main guitar: Gibson Custom Shop Les Paul '58 VOS (Faded tobacco sunburst)

Main amp: Marshall Vintage Modern (Rehearsal) and Hall Amplification Lil' Devil (Home).

Lately it`s been Class 5 combo and strat or 1974 and strat, the Les Paul has been naughty and benched for a while along with the super lead.

No pedals, been doing it all with guitar-cord-amp

I`m going minimalist for a while with the band.

Lately I"ve added TUBE SOUND, via the S-Gear Plugin from Scuffham Amps. smile.gif

I reviewed the plugin with samples here.

I'm also still really digging OVERLOUD TH2. The quality of these plugins is such that I don't use a physical amp to record with anymore as it's such a dip in quality by the time the tone gets in to the computer. I still think it's worth learning to record using an amp and SM57 or what not. It's just that practical day to day for the home recordist. Thanks to technology!

Todd

That's fine rig to be sure smile.gif Really it's 100 rigs in one box paired with an amazing guitar.
