I would NOT suggest buying a USB 1.1 interface. It's cheap, but there are plenty of cheap interfaces to be honest. USB 1.1 is a tad slow and legendary for creating lag/latency. Get a USB 2.0 interface and save yourself some headaches
That said, if you are simply wanting a cheap interface, then you can get one of these for $29. It's a guitar jack on one end, and a usb jack on the other end. You just plug it in to your laptop and bingo It will at least get you started with amp sims and such. http://www.sweetwater.com/store/detail/TConnect/ I'd say get something really cheap like that and start saving for a decent audio interface like maybe a Scarlett? Todd I found this really awesome little guy on an online store called the Behringer UCG102. Its a sound card with a 1/4 input jack for guitar, 1/4 jack for monitors/headphones and a volume control, connects via USB. The store offers it for $51 incl. shipping. I read reviews and watched demos and its REALLY decent for that price. Comes with a free demo version of guitar rig plus 3 amp sims (twang plex and vox) and you can license 1 of that with the key given on the cd case that comes with the device. Its compatible with windows 7, which I use on all my 3 laptops and my desktop. As most of you might know I'm a working university student so this is a gem for me because I record via line in and supposedly I can get REALLY decent input with a dedicated interface rather than my computer soundcard. Also this gives me the ability to record on my netbook which I love to take everywhere because of its size and weight. The ONLY thing thats bothering me is that its USB 1.1 and there is a huge speed difference between 2.0 and 1.1 so I'm worried about lag/latency or quality. But apparently, none of its owners have had any problems of that sort. What do you guys think? |

I use an M-Audio Fast Track and have had no problems with it. Its a basic interface, but it has great quality.
I wonder when USB 3 interfaces will hit the market. |

Sadly enough, I haven't managed to install my new audio interface, but out of what I have heard, it is a good piece of gear and the price is pretty decent: http://www.amazon.com/Lexicon-Alpha-Deskto...o/dp/B000HVXMNE

Its nothing personal korblitz but since this forum is public/open to the whole internet, due to privacy issues I can't really tell my location I'm in the Middle East and they charge a whole lot here for cheap stuff and if I get it shipped from another country, I have to pay a lot of shipping charges, duties and taxes, so the price would get a whole lot higher than its worth for the item. That's why I try to find local shops' websites here and order the items I need on the website, and get it at my door. |

As TAKA mentioned, some folks use 1.1 interfaces and have no trouble. That said, at this point, with so many usb 2.0 devices available, I just wouldn't sink money in to a 1.1 device. Depending on your track count/sample rate, you can easily saturate the bus and start getting problems.
Yes, that's what I wanted to do, just get started with a better sound that goes into my computer. I guess anything would beat a direct input to the computer's built in sound card. There's an M-Audio M-Track available too at the audio store near my home. But I think its USB 1.1 too and it costs $130. So I thought if going for a USB 1.1 why not go for the cheapest solution possible. LEXICON gear is quite nice and for the money this is impossible to beat. If you are trying to stay around 50 bux, I'd say this is one of your best options. I'd get it over the behringer in a heart beat. Just realize you will probably outgrow it pretty quick as it's usb 1.1 but for starters it's hard to go wrong for this price! Sadly enough, I haven't managed to install my new audio interface, but out of what I have heard, it is a good piece of gear and the price is pretty decent: http://www.amazon.com/Lexicon-Alpha-Deskto...o/dp/B000HVXMNE |
