I found this really awesome little guy on an online store called the Behringer UCG102. Its a sound card with a 1/4 input jack for guitar, 1/4 jack for monitors/headphones and a volume control, connects via USB.

The store offers it for $51 incl. shipping.

I read reviews and watched demos and its REALLY decent for that price. Comes with a free demo version of guitar rig plus 3 amp sims (twang plex and vox) and you can license 1 of that with the key given on the cd case that comes with the device.

Its compatible with windows 7, which I use on all my 3 laptops and my desktop.

As most of you might know I'm a working university student so this is a gem for me because I record via line in and supposedly I can get REALLY decent input with a dedicated interface rather than my computer soundcard. Also this gives me the ability to record on my netbook which I love to take everywhere because of its size and weight.

The ONLY thing thats bothering me is that its USB 1.1 and there is a huge speed difference between 2.0 and 1.1 so I'm worried about lag/latency or quality. But apparently, none of its owners have had any problems of that sort.

What do you guys think?

I would NOT suggest buying a USB 1.1 interface. It's cheap, but there are plenty of cheap interfaces to be honest. USB 1.1 is a tad slow and legendary for creating lag/latency. Get a USB 2.0 interface and save yourself some headaches smile.gif

That said, if you are simply wanting a cheap interface, then you can get one of these for $29. It's a guitar jack on one end, and a usb jack on the other end. You just plug it in to your laptop and bingo smile.gif It will at least get you started with amp sims and such.

http://www.sweetwater.com/store/detail/TConnect/

I'd say get something really cheap like that and start saving for a decent audio interface like maybe a Scarlett?

I use an M-Audio Fast Track and have had no problems with it. Its a basic interface, but it has great quality.

I wonder when USB 3 interfaces will hit the market.

Yes, that's what I wanted to do, just get started with a better sound that goes into my computer. I guess anything would beat a direct input to the computer's built in sound card.

There's an M-Audio M-Track available too at the audio store near my home. But I think its USB 1.1 too and it costs $130. So I thought if going for a USB 1.1 why not go for the cheapest solution possible.

Sadly enough, I haven't managed to install my new audio interface, but out of what I have heard, it is a good piece of gear and the price is pretty decent: http://www.amazon.com/Lexicon-Alpha-Deskto...o/dp/B000HVXMNE

For that price, that seems pretty great, but the only store that I found here that has that interface is selling it for $110, which is just plain stealing sad.gif

Its nothing personal korblitz but since this forum is public/open to the whole internet, due to privacy issues I can't really tell my location sad.gif I'm in the Middle East and they charge a whole lot here for cheap stuff sad.gif and if I get it shipped from another country, I have to pay a lot of shipping charges, duties and taxes, so the price would get a whole lot higher than its worth for the item. That's why I try to find local shops' websites here and order the items I need on the website, and get it at my door.

Yep I've heard of them, and I'm impressed with their prices and their catalog, but there's still the duties/taxes any shipped item gets on it when it gets here sad.gif I'll have to ask customs about that I guess.

My personal experience:

I have order 3 times...I never had to deal (xD...extreme) with customs. Friends who also ordered from them, didn't have an problemos with customs.

for 10 euros you can buy the behringer copy...not a lot of money.

That's good, I can probably try, its $14.8 only anyway. Thanks, I'll order ASAP and we'll see how soon it gets to me smile.gif

How long did you have to wait to get your items? And have you tried that interface? I'm kinda doubting the quality even though it looks the same, the only thing I'm worried about is noise on the raw guitar signal.

As TAKA mentioned, some folks use 1.1 interfaces and have no trouble. That said, at this point, with so many usb 2.0 devices available, I just wouldn't sink money in to a 1.1 device. Depending on your track count/sample rate, you can easily saturate the bus and start getting problems.

LEXICON gear is quite nice and for the money this is impossible to beat. If you are trying to stay around 50 bux, I'd say this is one of your best options. I'd get it over the behringer in a heart beat. Just realize you will probably outgrow it pretty quick as it's usb 1.1 but for starters it's hard to go wrong for this price!

Maybe I should save up for the Focusrite Scarlett 2i2, it would cost me around $130. In the meantime, my dad and I are building an extremely simple interface like the behringer UCG102, lets see if it improves my tone. At the moment, we made it USB 2.0 with a stereo headphone 6.3mm jack and a mono 6.3mm input jack, no volume controls. We're testing the impedance required for the guitar so my dad can get the right resistor on the input of the interface.

Alright Todd smile.gif Thanks for the heads up - it was a present from my band mates - but somehow, time has flown and I haven't managed to install it biggrin.gif due to my repulsion from wasting too much time on setting things up, maybe, or maybe I am just finding excuses? smile.gif I'll do it this weekend tho, as I found a buyer for my old EMU PCI 0404

I tested our "home made" interface and it works pretty good, the sound quality has little improvement but the noise is almost completely gone, because my dad made it so that there are no components that cause interference, which in turn, causes noise, so that's a big improvement smile.gif

The input level is really low and dad told me he had put a 3.9k Ohm resistor to match the impedance level. He said he's either gonna take the resistor out altogether or just put in a low value one, so that's not a big issue.

But, I also wanted the ability to have the interface connected to my laptop and the output of the interface connected to my amp's input. That I can't do at the moment, because (what I think might be the problem) the output level is too high, or because the output jack is stereo and my amp is mono, with a mono lead connecting the interface and the amp.

I'll keep you guys updated smile.gif I'll post a few samples as soon as the interface is ready to rumble biggrin.gif

Thats really cool that you built one smile.gif Thought about selling them? If you make a cheap quiet interface, you could easily sell wads of them if the price is right.

LEVEL FIX::

Low input level is the MOST COMMON CAUSE OF CRAP TONE (other than noise) in using Sims. The good news is that answer is simple and I"ve been going on about it for years smile.gif

1.)Get ANY stomp box OVERDRIVE.
-Put Volume @ 7
-Tone @ 6-10
-Start DRIVE @ 0 and turn up to taste.

The extra signal will drive your sim the way a tube screamer drives a Tube Amp when placed in front. (and old secret that wads of folks used) it also prevents the sim from sounding flubby since you can use the tone knob to reduce the bass hitting the sim. Too much and you get flub sound that isn't tight.

Welcome to the wonderful world of amazing tone @ home without going deaf smile.gif

Todd

Great words and suggestions from Todd - if you plan on selling them, you also need to 'dress them up' properly. Good marketing is very important for any product. I noticed that good products are sold after a lot of testing - take VonHotch for instance. His picks have been tested by folks here at GMC and I think it's an invaluable testing method - the users, willing to give you their feedback smile.gif
