GMC Forum _ CHILL OUT _ My Life...

Posted by: Young Guitarist Jun 16 2009, 12:50 AM

I just really cant decide guys. its summer vacation, i just finnished first 10 years of school. And im standing in the middle of a crossroad. I have different paths to chose. Some are safe, while others are risky. But are what i really want in life.

I was thinking about going to electric school, finnish that and then go in a college for programming for 5 years to get a Master grade. Thats my "safe path" ... The other one is..

Music... Music has had such a great impact on my life, id never be the same person i am today without music. I love all music that is instrumental, Blues, Acoustic, jazz, funk, rock, metal. I really express myself through music.

I am told that i have a true born talent in guitar from any guitar teacher i have had for short times. I learn fast, and they say i play with passion.

I really , really and i mean REALLY want to dedicate my life to music. But how shall i begin? Im not "pr0" on guitar yet. I started 12 months ago or so, but i can nearly play lvl 6 lessons here on GMC. But ive not been practicing much, maybe only like 20 mins a day...

But i really want to go seriously in for guitar, maybe after these 4 years at school that are up next, go to try and improve my music skills, become what im dreaming about. A musician...

I want, i really WANT to spend, 5-7 hours a day, studying guitar, and music in general. I can also become a programmer and work with music, but its a long path of school... And i feel its not the same. I want to dedicate my life to music. I express myself through music. And my soul and heart is just crying and want to burst out showing that expression. Through music. ARH! This is all so hard! I have my whole life in front of me (I'm 16) But these are all serious thoughts! You have no idea how many sleepless nights ive had, (3 in a row now) thinking about this.... I just... want to dedicate my life to music, study music, spend 5-7 hours a day playing guitar, try to make a living out of it, and i also have a talent! Atleast they say, very seriously. They told me NEVER EVER! To give up guitar.... Oh my god GMC, can you help me? I'm serious here, this is my future,

MY WISH IS MUSIC
MY SECURE PATH IS PROGRAMMING

I can go programming and still study music. But it wont be the same, im too sure... Sigh, please give me advice, i feel like my head is gonna blow up!

Well I don't know too much (younger than you) but my Dad is 3D Multimedia Designer / Programmer...

A Programmer sit there most the day behind a desk coding, you need good logic and design and work well in teams. What type of programmer, web development, games, or applications? Most can be really hard to get into. They work hard but also play hard! Play table tennis, dart, Wii, etc, at work and drink beer near the end of the week. Not really referred as geeky as they once where. Most also have a taste for music and doesn't really matter what you wear. Sometimes can work at home, sometime work overtime to get deadlines finished on time.

Music is purely a make or break. Spend your life at it and have to work with a great band. All members must rule or you suck! However, it's not just the music but also stage present.

You could do music on the side and if it's a hit, stop programming?

As for the programming, im going in games. I already know alot. And i think id easily master it. Well not easily, but with some work anyway.

having music at the side is something i thought off, and which i found the most reasonable, but i somehow dont feel thats the same anyway :/ I dunno, i guess il just concider this open minded and look deeper into my thoughts with consideration, Thanks Azzaboi ^^

Whichever way you decide, try not to give up entirely on the other choice. Also: sorry I just missed you in chat a few minutes ago, I didn't have my headphones on.

You say You practice 20 minutes per day, yet want to practice 5-7 hours? How do You know how is it? I would like to practice guitar 5-10 hours a day while staying inspired and fresh, but I am unable to do it. So before wanting something, better check what it really is --> and I am not talking about spending 5 hours with guitar once a week, but everyday for two weeks, as Your choices theoretically apply to a quite long period in Your life. How much theory You learned the past year? I wanted to learn much, but learned a little.

Negative thinking isn't a good thing, but wishful thinking isn't good either. I bet 90% of GMC'ers "wanted" to dedicate their lives to music, but wanting isn't enough, so in my opinion before making a decision it would be good to think about every detail 10 times, leaving overwhelming emotions aside.

I work as a programmer and do 5 hours practice every day.

Go the programmer route. You'll need money to fund your guitar playing. Even if your amazing, you'll still have a hard time making money from music. If you want to improve your playing badly enough, you'll find ways of fitting it around school/work.

I feel you man, I was actually on a very similar path some time ago. I started studying programming and in the middle of studies discovered it is just not for me. Feel free to go on programming studies, but you won't actually know if you like it or don't like it until you start coding professionally and hang out with the people who are actually doing those jobs. If you feel like programming then, then you can say it's a safe bet for you.
Regarding music, I feel that you should never give up your music no matter what. Just be persistent and music itself can find it's way into your life if you are good. Don't worry too much about being on the crossroad, just try to do whatever you feel you want to do. You are just starting to be a musician it's a long and hard path to there, just as it is for being a coder. If you really like music more than coding, then I really recommend you go into music school cause doing something you don't like can only feel you bad.

>As for the programming, im going in games

If you want to get into games, the most important thing is to have a demo or two to show with your CV. This applies especially to programming. They're looking for people who can program solidly, but also can actually make something with their programming skills. This is why it's one of the harder programming jobs to get into.

I think Ivans post gives the best advice on what to do generally, though.
