String Dampeners, Cheating? Does it matter?

I've never tried it, but I've seen some great players using it. I've heard some people call it cheating. I can see why, but if it sounds good, does it matter? Is it a "badge of honor" or something to shred without one? I'm working through some noise issues when tapping, etc... & I'm curious to try it, but afraid it'll be addicting and become a crutch. I know that both Juan Valero and Muris use a sort of dampener from time to time, so I think they will be able to answer any questions as to playability you may have. But as to the matter of it being cheating, I would say NO, definitely not. It still takes technique to execute the tapping licks, and a dampener doesn't damp ALL the noises. It just helps you with some of the unwanted noises so that you can care a little less about dampening whilst playing the rocking licks. You are at GuitarMasterClass.net Don't miss today's free lick. Just play good or improve your skills, if you use that strings dampener you need it for ever because you'll adapt your technique to him. Just my opinion. If you can find a cool way of getting your ideas out there, the best way possible, its an innovation. The guitar exists in its glory today because of innovations. Maybe it's not necessary for regular picking,legato,taping etc, when your right hand is able to mute properly. But as Daniel said,it comes quite handy for stuff like 8 fingers tapping.
