String Dampeners, Cheating? Does it matter?

Hey GMCers,

What's the general opinion out there regarding string dampeners? I've never tried it, but I've seen some great players using it. I've heard some people call it cheating. I can see why, but if it sounds good, does it matter? Is it a "badge of honor" or something to shred without one? I'm working through some noise issues when tapping, etc... & I'm curious to try it, but afraid it'll be addicting and become a crutch. Anyway, I'd love to hear anyone's thoughts on the subject.

As far as I know, it is commonly used by guitarists who tap a lot, or in solo's where theres a lot of tapping. I know that both Juan Valero and Muris use a sort of dampener from time to time, so I think they will be able to answer any questions as to playability you may have. smile.gif
But as to the matter of it being cheating, I would say NO, definitely not. It still takes technique to execute the tapping licks, and a dampener doesn't damp ALL the noises. It just helps you with some of the unwanted noises so that you can care a little less about dampening whilst playing the rocking licks. smile.gif

Hmmmm....yeah, I've been thinking about that. It does seem like cheating in some way to me, it's as if you're taking a shortcut with your playing.

I still use one though. smile.gif

Well live I don't think it is necessary , but when doing some recording sessions in studio they can be handy.

I find it useful for when recording solos to get the cleanest track as possible recorded, and i use it alot for that.
I dont see how it's cheating though because you wont turn into Buckethead because you have a dampener or a hairband muting the strings.

I think that for 8 fingers tapping players is ok, but for the others not. Just play good or improve your skills, if you use that strings dampener you need it for ever because you'll adapt your technique to him. Just my opinion.

Actually I was considering giving this a shot. Rubber hair band ya say?

Cheating doesn't exist on the guitar. If you can find a cool way of getting your ideas out there, the best way possible, its an innovation. The guitar exists in its glory today because of innovations. I don't think a rubber hair band is at the top of the "cheating" list, if there would ever be one.

rock on

I would say it's cheating as well. smile.gif
Just don't "overuse" it,something like that.
Maybe it's not necessary for regular picking, legato, taping etc,
when your right hand is able to mute properly.
But as Daniel said,it comes quite handy for stuff like 8 fingers tapping.
Trond is right as well,it saves you a lot of time in studio.

I personally don't like the idea because isn't it just going to give you sloppy technique? also you can't use the open strings i don't think. I'd personalyl rather learn to tap without dampeners

Never used it smile.gif

Personally I like the resonance of other strings when playing, and it is not the same if you control the muting with left or right hand, comparing to dampers that mute evenly all strings. smile.gif
