Fast Picking "is Not That Useful"

Nov 1 2017, 06:00 PM	Instructor Posts: 36.043 Joined: 3-March 07 From: Argentina	I've found an interesting article about some things that Paul Gilbert said in a recent interview.. “The fast picking thing is not that useful, but holding a bend, adding vibrato and being in tune is," he continued. “Teaching has made me realize that a lot of my fast playing is the musical equivalent of, ‘Umm… umm… uhh…’ - it’s like when you’re trying to think of the next thing to say that actually has meaning, you fill space." That's a bit how I view things regarding some of the classic Paul's shred licks. As more of a percussive tool rather than melodic But is all about a balanced diet at the end of the day. He's beyond modest about his ability and his place in the "Guitar Pantheon". Also, he has been able to play that stuff since he was a teenager, so for him it's almost an afterthought/instinct. So I could see him not placing a huge value on it, being just part of the guy he is. He is a monster technique player, and the fact that he is now more focused on note choices, I feel that there are great days coming for Paul's guitar works.
