I've found an interesting article about some things that Paul Gilbert said in a recent interview..

“The fast picking thing is not that useful, but holding a bend, adding vibrato and being in tune is," he continued. “Teaching has made me realize that a lot of my fast playing is the musical equivalent of, ‘Umm… umm… uhh…’ - it’s like when you’re trying to think of the next thing to say that actually has meaning, you fill space."

"‘Umm’ has about the same meaning as my fast playing."

I think Paul's mid-life crisis is transforming him into a blues fanatic biggrin.gif *Joking*

For instance 6:21, that lick is very gilberish if it here in a guitar IMO and is working as more of a rhythmic mechanic rather than solo. That's a bit how I view things regarding some of the classic Paul's shred licks. As more of a percussive tool rather than melodic

But is all about a balanced diet at the end of the day.

It's a proven fact that guitar faces have a bigger impact on tone than wood does.

'filling space' has certainly served him well so far smile.gif I get what he's saying but I imagine it's easy to be a bit self deprecating about fast picking when you are arguably one of the best in the world at it cool.gif

I had the same thought smile.gif He has always been a self deprecating sort of guy. He's beyond modest about his ability and his place in the "Guitar Pantheon". Also, he has been able to play that stuff since he was a teenager, so for him it's almost an afterthought/instinct. So I could see him not placing a huge value on it, being just part of the guy he is. It's probably more important for folks who are fans and who are trying to work out picking for themselves, so fans and guitar students smile.gif I'm both so I'm probably more in to his picking work than he is smile.gif

I guess what served him well was writing a hit song with Mr Big called "Be with you"...

There sure is a lot of truth to what he says - but who cares? Shreddig is fun, and it's the fun stuff we will remember on our death beds.

Having a hit song certainly does serve one well to be sure smile.gif

I think that since he has got interest in "following the chords" concept, he is now more interested on what notes he plays instead of technique, which is a great thing! He is a monster technique player, and the fact that he is now more focused on note choices, I feel that there are great days coming for Paul's guitar works.
