I've had this interesting thought lately, as I've been listening to classical piano pieces, and one thing most of them have in common is that there's a push and pull of timing. A lot of music today is more "strict" in staying in tempo and we often talk about being drummers/musicians able to maintain and keep the tempo. I like the "feel" of some of these classical piano pieces, as they seem to have more... "feel" partly due to the timing being less "strict", in lack of a better word. It's not a computer generated constant 80 BPM for instance:

EDIT: I did notice the delay was a bit off, by the way. I had forgotten to change the BPM to 85 (of the backing) from 74 in the preset. Might do another take at some point soon smile.gif

-

The tone is from Neural DSP Plini. I just lowered the gain a bit and so on from the original the preset. I think it's based on the "Electric Sunrise - Solo" preset, but I'm not sure anymore, since I called it "soft solo" and another one "high gain solo" laugh.gif I find that Neural DSP plugins, especially this one, reacts really well to dynamics. Better than other plugins I've used in the past.

I've used the micro techniques in the past, but especially dynamics was tricky with some plugins - almost like the sound was compressed to be equal dynamic. I noticed this with plugins like Guitar Rig 10 years ago, but they all improve and react better and better, I think smile.gif AND I've tried to just be more aware of it too.

A lot of my practicing is "mental" and about awareness and maybe not so much the actual technical side of it, where we might sit and physically practice the dynamics, micro bends and so on for a long time. Same goes for timing, which I'll be the first to admit sometimes is an issue for me. I sometimes adapt a bit of a "floating timing" style and then go back in groove with the beat - sort of back and forth between those, floating about and being locked in. It's something I'm working on and trying to be aware of too, being a bit more locked in and a little less floating about, but timing can require a lot of ACTUAL practice, not just mentally laugh.gif

Maybe I should get a dog like this laugh.gif

hahaha that dog got me!! laugh.gif laugh.gif

Yeah! Plug ins have improved a lot and now we can head dynamics. In the past, it was impossible to manage different levels with them. And yes, Plini is also one of my favorites. For any reason, I wasn't enjoying the delay, I though that it was because the level, but maybe it was because of the time setting.

Yes, the plugins are getting better and better. For heavy rhythm stuff I like the Archetype Gojira.

And I agree, the delay was weird. I think I must have been way too tired when recording that. Didn't really give it a second listen laugh.gif Here's a different one.

Well I didn't know whether to put this here or in my thread with Gab. As some of you know, I've been struggling with my head recently and guitar has been off my radar but it's lifted now and I needed some therapy so I've tried to incorporate some of the dynamics and micro bends into an improv over an E minor blues backing.

It was completely not thought about, I just needed to lose myself so there are mistakes but it helped me a LOT!!!

Cheers

I really like your playing here, Phil (notice what it says in the "name" of the quote cool.gif). It seems to me as if you feel more at "home" here in this style than other styles maybe. More "free" in way? It's GREAT to hear this in your playing! smile.gif

I think I'd add a bit of reverb to the tone, or a bit more if you already have some on there, and then just a slight pinch of delay (not overdo it like me when I'm tired and don't notice what I'm doing laugh.gif). Could be a simple delay set to match the tempo and then a note length of "1/8d" (dotted 8th note), but not let it be too loud. It just sort of fills some space a bit more. Or the length of a quarter note - you can experiment with that if you want. Along with the reverb, I think that would make it sit nicely with the rest of the track and "glue" the guitar more to the track. But I'm no pro, I just use the "trial and error" method. laugh.gif Don't overwrite your current preset if you start to experiment though...I talk from experience when I say that can make you go: "Oh, no! What settings did I have before?" laugh.gif

Thank Ben, and double thanks for the SRV badge cool.gif I wish I'd used my SRV Strat for it now. There is a little bit of reverb but not much. I won't overwrite the patch, been there, done that rolleyes.gif

Did you hear any micro technique happening? I haven't played it back and I was just lost in the moment.

Cheers
