Hi guys! I'm currently working on this lesson (Finnish power metal III : Nightwish by Gabriel) and I think to post my effort so far (140 bpm) in order to get some feedback and advice.

Hi Kalidia! I think that you are on the right track with this lesson. You are playing the different riffs correctly and now it's time adjust details and keep on practicing to achieve faster tempos. I think that the main thing that you have to focus is timing and groove. This metal style requires to be play very tight and this is not happening on your take. Here are some ideas to make this happen:

- Work on each part as a different exercise using a drum loop or metronome. After some repetitions, you will be able to put all your concentration just in timing and going tight with the drums.
- Move your body and head following the groove while you play. You will have more errors at first but your playing will be more groovy. Then, with practice you will achieve both precision and groove.
- Close your eyes, listen to the backing and just concentrate on the rhythm and groove. Feel it, sing or imagine the riffs being played perfectly.
- Play with more dynamics, give more life to your playing. Some parts should sound more aggressive than others, identify which ones and practice the lesson exaggerating dynamics.

This is not an easy lesson, I remember that it took me some practice to play all those riffs and variations tight and without errors. Keep on practicing and please share with me a new take in a few days.

Hey mate smile.gif Gabi is right! You have learned the parts and you can play correctly, but tightness is something which is achieved after really feeling what you are playing. It's that little but very noticeable aspect in a piece played after a lot of practice.

I think that if you follow Gabi's suggestions, you will be able to reach that level in which your playing will sound tight and accurate just like his.

Please do share a new recording, even if at a slower tempo - remember, tightness and groove are still tightness and groove regardless of the tempo smile.gif

Hey mate smile.gif

I think it has clearly more definition and the timing is good, as well as the dynamics and you seem relaxed while playing.

If you could keep this feeling and just raise the tempo, it would be great. The only thing that seemed to need a little bit of work, in my opinion, was the palm muting sequence around 01:33 which was too dry, because you muted too close to the neck. Otherwise, keep rocking and let's see the next recording at a different speed!

Hi mate! I have to congrat you on this video. You took our comments, and understood that it was time to go for a slower backing to be able to focus on details that will help you to master the lesson and take your rhythm playing to a new level. Your take is much tighter now, and the tone that you got on this one is very strong. Power chords sound full and the palm muting is very precise! Congratulations.

There are some parts where things become a bit blurry like that moment when the lesson has fast power chord changes (around 1:07), so maybe you can still continue working on this sections as isolated exercises.

Dynamics are better on this one, but there is something that you have to pay attention to give some riffs the correct intention and accentuation. The use of alternate picking vs downpicking seems to be the same but it isn't. The resulting sound and intention is very different. I would wonder how the Ramones would have sound without Johny's downpicking playing on their faster songs. It sounds more agressive, more accentuated. I recommend to analyze your your right hand movements and compare them with the used by me on the lesson (do this every time you are working on a lesson). Check the riff starting at 00:26 for example. When I heard it on you take I said, this one need to sound different... I compared it with my take and I noted that the difference was the use of some downpicking which make it sound more aggressive, more industrial, like the lesson requires it.

So, to summarize, you are doing a killer job, keep on working thinking on this details and start to slowly increase the tempo concentrating on everything you've been working.

Keep on rocking! wink.gif

It was expected that Gabi would deliver very detailed insights about his lesson, so follow his suggestions and you will surely get this lesson under your thumb smile.gif

Definition comes with time and you need to tune your ear very finely to the textures obtained by Gabi when he is playing. This can be a pretty tough job, because most of the times you need to get into the skin of the player you are trying to mimic and feel his intentions for a certain phrase or passage in a song - at least that's how I see it and how I try to approach it usually. Think of imitating him as closely as possible, now that Gabi has told you the details as to where that should happen.

Keep rocking wink.gif

Hey there amigo - all these are very good choices! I only have one thing to add - don't spread yourself too thin by trying to get them all done at once wink.gif I'd tackle them one by one and make sure each is in good shape, before going on to the next one smile.gif

Would you be interested in having your own mentoring thread in which we could discuss each of these lessons at a time and monitor your progress? smile.gif

These lessons are good choices. The ones by Darius and Piotr are among my favorites. You can go for one or two of these ones, but try to stay focused on less stuff but in a deeper way. Don't work on more than 2 lessons based on the same technique/topic at the same time.

And remember about our thread: http://www.guitarmasterclass.net/guitar_forum/index.php?showtopic=52740

Cheers,

Gab.-

@ Cosmin: Start mentoring again would be great, I have plenty of time in the next 2 weeks. We have already started a thread on rhythm (http://www.guitarmasterclass.net/guitar_forum/index.php?showtopic=49911&st=20) maybe we could reuse this?

@ Gabriel: We haven't started a thread yet Gabe, i think you mistook my nick Kalidia with the one of the other user Kalkilla because the thread you linked to me is hers not mine smile.gif

Hey mate smile.gif Of course we can - have you made any progress with that lesson? I checked out the thread and out of what I have noticed, we were discussing a riffing lesson in the style of Disturbed smile.gif

Are you still into that one? Or is there anything else you might like to work on? If you want to start fresh, please take a look over this thread here and write your answers on the questions in your thread so we can begin smile.gif
