GMC Forum _ GEAR & PRODUCTION _ Just Bought Krk Rockit 5 Speakers

Posted by: liveOASISforever Dec 30 2013, 04:41 PM

Hi

I need a little help please. I just bought KRK Rockit 5 speakers and they should be arriving tomorrow.I will be plugging them into my Line 6 Pod Studio GX

I just realised that its coming with a XLR to 1/4 inch jack.My device only has one 1/4 inch jack input that I will be plugging my guitar into.So will I have to buy a 1/4 inch female to 3.5mm male jack to plug into the line out.

Thanks in advance

Sean

I don't have monitors as I just use headphones, but my interface has 2 outs a left and a right. So you may need to get something as I have below. It's a 3.5mm Stereo plug to RCAs. That way each speaker has it's input. I'm sure more people will chime in but I'm sure this will work. I kind of do the reverse to an old stereo receiver in the garage when I hook my mp3 player to it.

Thanks for your reply.A dont know much about this kind of stuff laugh.gif I will check your method out.
Do you know if there will be a difference in the sound using your method or using the XLR cable.

Thanks Sean

Hey man ! I don't know your guitar gear setup but shouldn't you connect those speakers to your computer ?

This depends on which audio soundcard he is using... if he uses Line 6 interface, he will have to to what Spase suggested, If he using his onboard soundcard, he will have to connect it to it.

Thanks Sean

as long as your cables are not over fifteen feet you will be fine, the longer the cables , the more chance for interference , so , the shorter the cable less is the chance

Yeah a was going to use the line 6 interface. I am now thinking that I should upgrade it to the UX1 or UX2 as the one I have is very basic.

I was searching a lot of line 6 forums to get more information on everything.I read that I should try and avoid the RCA as it is unbalanced and go for the TRS or XLR.Does anyone know how these would work. Could I get a two way TRS cable to a single 3.5mm jack to fit my Line 6 interface

Got everything sorted now cheers. smile.gif

Now just need to learn pod farm

Congratulations on this purchase!

I have the same speakers and they work really well. I'm also connecting them to similar interface - Toneport UX2 smile.gif
Please let me know if you need any help.

Great buy man smile.gif Congrats on making the babies work - I found the KRKs a bit less organic than I would like. Are these your first monitors?

Thanks very much Bogdan. Am sure I will have some questions to ask soon. I will play about with it the next couple of days and see how I get on.

Ah, great smile.gif Well, I sure enjoyed my first pro monitor experience! I got mine pretty recently as well - last year in August. Got a pair of Yamaha HS7 which I am very happy about. How have you positioned yours? On a desk or on stands?

I have a noob question biggrin.gif : Is there a difference in listening experience when you listen to a song through studio monitors vs through normal speakers.. What I am trying to ask is, are monitors only good for making mixes and such??

Actually its a good question as high-end consumer speakers are often used for mastering. But in limited budgets, monitors are built to have the least coloration for the money.

This coloration is usually considered a plus for music listening but when mixing you have to hear everything as-is as much as possible.

Its hard to generalize but music through monitors should sound more detailed but harsh or sterile compared to an equal budget home type stereo system. More of a preference type thing if you ask me rather than simply good or bad...

I never had a chance to compare directly, but I found listening to music on monitors a sort of "revelation" in terms how how nice and detailed music sounded. Of course, I didn't have equal quality hi-fi speakers to compare with but I use my monitors for everyday stuff and listening to music, not just mixing. I really like how music sounds through them.

Todd here smile.gif Congrats on your speakers!! smile.gif I'd suggest using the audio output of your audio interface. And, as was mentioned, since the line 6 has a mini headphone out, you'll need the adapter in the previous post. XLR connectors are great but really help reduce hum on long cable runs. On short cable runs your rca cables will work fine smile.gif If you eventually get an interface with quarter inch (guitar jack) or xlr output, then you can plug those in to the speakers. I'm using quarter inch speaker cable now as my interface has quarter in jacks for output monitoring smile.gif

Congrats on Your new purchase smile.gif Those are one of most popular. You have to get used to their tone at the beginning. Good point but Mertay. Mixes will sound very bright comparing to most home audio gear. Also...watch out for low end - don't try to get "subwoofer" sound with those smile.gif

Thanks Darius.I have being experimenting with the speakers and Pod Farm the last couple of days and I am really enjoying using them.It is a lot to learn for me as I normally just play with a amp with one pedal at the most.

There are of course hi fi devices meant especially for the listener as studio monitors are meant for the musician/sound engineer. Some of the most famous ones are Bang and Olufsen or Bose. I think you might enjoy reading this article here smile.gif

Some mastering studios do use audophile hi fi speakers as monitors BUT and this is a big but the speakers really are high end audiophile and not the common domestic hi fi type. They are also very often passive and partnered with audiophile high end power amps.

Tips and insights from people who know what goes on behind the courtain are always welcome, Tony wink.gif I was curious, what are, in your opinion, the most representative and worthy hi fi speakers for home listening? I have a friend who is always in a hot pursuit for this sort of stuff and I wanted to help him out a bit smile.gif Thank you!

It often depends on the type of music that you want to play and what other equipment you have and personal taste Cosmin. Nonetheless some of the manufacturers highly regarded are BW, DunLavy, Paradigm, Sonus Faber, Avalon, ATC, Thiel, Lipinski, Magnepan, Martin Logan, Spendor, Klipschorn, Rogers...

Of those its the big BW, ATC, Lipinski and DunLavy that are most likely to turn up in a mastering studio. One of the main things with mastering studio here is that most of us use mid field 3 ways (or more) so the bass, mid and tweeter are all separate and our studios are quite large: very few of us use 2 way near fields and sit close to them..

At home our hifi includes a pair of now quite old Sonus Faber Concertos, which works well for us as we listen to a lot of classical, choral, female vocal and piano and our living room isn't that big. Our Sonus Fabers weren't massivly expensive I think they were @$2k new back around 1999 plus about another 1k for dedicated stands. Sonus http://www.sonusfaber.com/en-us/products don't make them anymore.
At work it's a pair of 3 way ATC SCMs http://www.atcloudspeakers.co.uk/professional/loudspeakers/scm50a-pro/, which were about $15k plus a bit more for stands. The ATCs are much more revealing of every aspect of a recording than the Fabers and really do put the spot light on a poor mix. I particularly like them as the mid range particularly around the female vocal end is very 3d. The downsides are they need quite a large room and they won't do any favours for poor recordings - the Fabers are much more forgiving of poor recordings.

Interesting thread. I''m planning to get a new pair of monitors for my home studio to improve my mixes. I was thinking on KRK, but I'm open to other options that are in the same range... I need active monitors, which ones do you recommend?

Hehe, thanks man smile.gif I knew you'd know stuff - I will pass the info to my friend! What do you think about Bang and Olufsen? I've seen them in Geneva and out of what I remember they are regarded as prime gear..

I for one am very happy with my Yamaha HS 7, but on the other hand I am not experienced enough to have tried others and say - yes, these are the ones!
