Well said. It seems the bulk of young players that I see on youtube are obsessed with playing music that other people wrote. While that will get more yotube views typically than original tunes (except of course for the hybrid stuff x meets y as Ben does!) I do hope younger players start trying to find their own voice instead of trying to do Djent versions of Katy perry tunes, or vanity covers of Keith Merrow songs.

There is no need to be jelous
Of course it's worth respect and appreciation but let finally say it.
Our practice will take as no further than we need
I mean If You are not able to make yourself practice as much as necessary to reach that level...You probably just don't need it that much
As said by Ben..we all know how much time taking is practice even very talented people need to practice
The difference is...they take the time to reach the level because they a posessed with a need of getting things done.
Most players think like " Man...I would like to play like that" but seems like there is no self-motivation so big that would lead them there
For me it's even with "I don't need to have that huge skills"...it's something natural
We admire others but somewhere inside we're sure we won't give same amount of work to reach that point
It's nothing bad though
Personally I see one big problem. From the countless number of skilled Young players....how many compose their own stuff?
Who ever tried to write instrumental song, knows how hard it is...much easier to say "I can play like this" but the question is "Would I be able to write something like this".
In a present times I'm afraid about Young people because they're going in the bad direction
Probably because they are "just covers". Sure, they can be very spiff in their own way
But it would be so much more refreshing to see younger players searching for their own voice instead of simply digging up "cover songs". It almost turns youtube in to a kind of "Guitar Karaoke". Sure, some are very entertaining, and some are really original, but it's still a lot of folks doing "covers" instead of writing their own music.

In my case I just get motivation when I listen to a guitarist who plays better than me. It inspires me to pick up my guitar and practice for several hours. This happened since the first day I started playing the guitar and thanks to that I always noticed that my guitar playing improved. With the pass of time I started to feel that the music that you do is much more important than the tricky is what you play, so I focused more to composition, and started to lack interest in playing known pieces just to show how good you play.
In other ways, there are lots of amazing guitar players playing covers by Steve Vai, Yngwie Malmsteen, Paul Gilbert... but we should ask ourselves why we are talking abut Steve, Yngwie and not about the million of players that can play their songs, in some cases even better than the originals...
