Playing With The Local Legend, and failing miserably...

I was over at a friends house today w/ my guitar and we were playing around, and my friend's 'uncle & crew' showed up, guitars a-blazing. I wasnt really pressured to play any, but after about an hour of everyone playin around, this one guy (who is one of those guys everyone talks about being awesome at guitar) shows up, and he starts playin some killer leads & stuff. I myself am having trouble really getting up to speed with soloing, and I havent really developed too far into fast improvising, but when he started playing, he was really spectacular.

But, my problem was that I was the only one at the scene toting a Gibson Les Paul, and I guess this kinda got some attention from him, because he complimented my guitar, and then asked me to show him 'what I got.' I asked him what he meant, and he played a little riff, and my hands went numb. It was as if I had forgotten how to hold the guitar, because he started playing rhythm and expected me to play lead. I managed to play 2 notes before my hand just locked up.

Anyone have any ideas as to why this might have happened? I know I wasnt nervous because everyone was laid back, we were real loose because we had been playing for a couple of hours. I really have no idea why or how it happened, and I was just wondering if this had ever happened to anyone else... ever.

Maybe you just arent used to doing "on the spot" improv when another person plays a rhythm, i mean, you have to recognize what hes playing, what key or whatever, all you need is a little practice with it, and it wont be a problem.

I just figure out what key he is in, and just "Guess", when i do improv i never think of notes, i think of patterns, its alot quicker and your not fumbling over your own thoughts as much, thats what helps me.

I have the same problem. Really the only thing you can do is play for people more often and trust what you've learned.

Also, invest in Jack Daniels for a little liquid courage :D

I dont know what it happened Thomas but im sure we can help you. Just out of interest, have you watced any of Kris's Pentatonic 101 lessons? They have given me total fretboard freedom for improvisation and I think you could benifit the same way in no time.

I started just learning the scale box pattens in the key of Am minor. Then i moved onto switching between boxes. It wasnt long before i stopped seeing boxes and started improvsieing over the whole fretboard by ear!

Today Im really busting some killer licks in all directions, horizontally up and down the fretboard, diagonal runs, stacked pattens, whatever takes my fancy! In addition ive been able to shift the box patterns up and down to fit the key someones playing in!

You could try working through the 3 pentatonic lessons then practice for maybe an hour a day on this one topic and youll be able to show them what ya got! biggrin.gif

Ahh thanks I need to improve on improv (haha nice play on words), but I do like the sound of booze as a soloution... I just wish I were a little older haha. I'll be sure to check out the pentatonic video, and start playing in front of more people would be a good idea also. Thanks for the advice guys
