From what I call, Todd Simpson is a pretty big fan. My favourite band to come out of Japan is Dir En Grey, but yes, X Japan is pretty damn awesome.

If you guys want REAL Japanese HEAVY METAL you should check Loudness not some "metalish" clowns !!

Thanks to my obsession with Black Metal, I am building a very large collection of Vinyl. Most of the vinyl I currently own is 80's metal(including a rare EP of Ozzy just after he found Rhandy Rhoades), as I inherited much of it from my Uncle.

I know them and some songs but I have never been too much into their music. I also liked Loudness, but if I'm not wrong my favourite album from them had an american singer. The guitar player is awesome.

I especially like the first song, Kurenai, it's a lovechild of Iron Maiden and Helloween. laugh.gif
These guys got a very interesting sound and I'll surely listen a bit more to them.

They were pretty big over there when I was stationed on Okinawa (1989-1990). Their music was okay. I had their CD: "Psychedelic Violence: Crime of Visual Shock". The song I liked was "Endless Rain." However, they would try to put English into some of their music and the translations didn't make much sense at times. Their mohawks and playing with balloons on stage were lame, in my opinion. However, they were popular and were making a lot of money! smile.gif

Yeah man, great association! Heavy Metal or No Metal at all!!
But i found Loudness a bit softer version smile.gif In Fact Paul Gilbert stated that hes playing's influenced by their guitarist Akira Takasaki.

If you like REAL Japanese stuff, you should check Eartshaker also , they sound simmilar to Saxon smile.gif

I have really only heard their song Art of Life, which is a bit of a medley. Rather interesting, but not on my top list.

Funny that you mention it. biggrin.gif Ben Higgins did a lesson a while ago, called Heavy Metal Shuffle. I pointed out somewhere that it reminds me of Blood of my Enemies (and he later recorded an awesome cover of that song!), but I could as well have said Heavy Chains although I didn't think he would be familiar with it. Are you, Ben? laugh.gif

Haha, check it out

As for Loudness, pretty sure their vocalist (or one of them) was Mike Vescera, who sang on the Malmsteen albums Seventh Sign and Magnum Opus, two of his best albums. smile.gif

How did I miss this thread? I am semi obsessed with Japanese culture in general and as such, many of the tropes that go along with it. One of those things is X Japan! Another is a Pop songstress named Utada Hikaru. Both were so huge in Japan that they became a cultural force in an of themselves.

Here is where it gets wierd. When one of the members of X Japan killed himself, several Japanese Girls tried to kill themselves as well. This struck me as so strange that I had to make a short film about it. Good memory Nihilist! Here it is. It's about 5 minutes.

I would have a hard time calling X Japan "Metal" but I do like their use of melody/harmony and their way out there look. Part of what I like is that almost look like they are trying to make fun of themselves, almost like they are trying to be ironic like STEEL PANTHER but they are in fact dead serious. It never gets old. smile.gif

Here is a tune I thought was spiff and sounded like it could have been released from an LA Pop Metal band about 1984. I re cut the video myself and added live clips and such. If you have seen the other vid, see if you can tell the diff?
