I have to admit before coming to this site, I did not know who this man was, now I need more of his music.
So my question is,
has he worked his entire career with Dire Straits??
and, on what album would I find his best stuff?
Thanks!
-Chris

As Paal said Knopfler has had a pretty extensive solo career as well as his time with Dire Straits. He was also in a group called The Notting Hillbillies which was primarily a country band but I think they only did one album, although I don't recall the name of it. Knopfler has done all kinds of projects with other artist too such as Emmylou Harris, Eric Clapton, BB King, Chet Atkins and the list goes on.
I searched iTunes and found most of his solo stuff, Dire Straits and the albums he did with Emmylou Harris and Chet Atkins so there is some stuff there to get you started. I'd recommend anything by Dire Straits especially the Brothers in Arms album and also Knopler did a few movie soundtracks including the score for one of my favourite movies "The Princess Bride" I believe there is a CD called "Screenplaying" which is pretty good. All instrumental and kinda celtic feeling so ya know I like it

Some good suggestions here,
whatever you listen to where Mark is involved is just pure music gold,
you can't miss.
If I can suggest Brothers in Arms, Love over Gold, Communique and the self titled Dire Straits album for some very fine guitarwork, I will! Of course they're all good but I think these are the best dire straits albums.
The Dire Straits Brothers in Arms album, I grew up listening to that album, I thought it was amazing even before I ever picked up the guitar for the first time, as My Dad liked Dire Straits very much. He also had another one that was a Greatest Hits, the album itself was called Money For Nothing I believe, and it had great songs such as Romeo and Juliet, Sultans of Swing, Tunnel of Love, Walk of life.
