I recently heard about to tune a guitar in steps of perfect fours, means to adjust the tuning of the B and high E string to C and F.

Standard tuning : E A D G B E
Tuning in 4ths : E A D G C F

I think it's an interesting idea and places the notes quite symmetrical on the fretboard. I suppose i will be completely lost if i would try it, but it sounds like to have some advantages when improvising and moving through different chord progressions.

Someone have experiences with this tuning or is actually using it? I would like to hear your thoughts ..

It is very interesting tuning indeed,
I tried is few times and some things are much easier to play
once you "switch" to it properly.
Problem is regular barre chords we use to play with standard tuning
and also "open" chords, you might wanna find new open chords. smile.gif

True, open chords will be a problem, at least the standard once.

I guess it could be somehow easier to improvise with this tuning. It will reduce some steps of thinking to find quickly chord notes or other intervals. For example arpeggios over different octaves will always use the same shape.

Would you say it's worth to try or it will be more confusing?

Having tried it once, I would say it is definately worth the try, but probably takes some time getting used to. I didn't feel like keeping my guitar tuned in 4ths, so I switched back. I geuss it does open up some new opportunities though.

interesting tuning for the guitar. Some things might be easier to play as Muris said but could be tricky for the other stuff. I think that violin uses this tuning.

It sounds great in theory , symetrical playing and all, but after playing in standard tuning for 13 years or so it would just hold me back I think as I would need to relearn all the things on top two strings : )

I've tried out quite a few alternate tunings over the years, and i actually have 1 or 2 songs in this tuning. You can get some quite interesting ideas out of it.
My favourite alternate tuning would be CGCGCE

Still so much to discover in standard tuning that i never saw the need to try different tunings. CGCGCE gives indeed some new possibilities i guess.

Why did you used the 4ths tuning for your songs, any specific reasons for that?
When i saw this video i was just starting to think, why tuning in 4ths is not getting much more popular in todays world of shred and improvised music. A lot of player on electric guitar hardly play open chords.

Yes, for someone used to standard tuning it would be weird. In 4ths, both strings are just half a step higher, so nothing which could not be played in standard tuning i think.

My improvisation approach work at the moment a lot by just applying licks. Suddenly all these licks will not work any more and i'm forced to think about each note and build new shapes that ways.... all just theory, but i think it's interesting smile.gif

No real reason actually smile.gif I just like to try out different tunings because it always helps me to get some fresh ideas i wouldnt have thought up in regular tuning. Especially when i'm running low on song-ideas.

It's more of a improvisational tuning than anything in my opinion, as it just makes everything a bit easier to think of.

But still super cool.

You're welcome mate!

Maybe you haven't heard because the standard tuning works in a specific way and everybody is used to play all with that tuning. But the bass players always tune in 4ths because of that symmetry that brings that specific tuning.

Spot on, 6 string basses get C as 1st string
and it IS easier to think that way, all shapes are the same.
