But yes, if you have C maj, you can also play the A minor pattern, or the D dorian, or the E phrygian ,or F lydian, etc. This, however, are all the same notes, and thus it's the same scale. IF you want to modulate, you have to change the notes of your root. However, I don't think you're ready for modes yet

The same scale apart from the root note, and that in fact makes all the difference! This is a confusing area, and its best left until you have some experience with scales in general ... don't confuse modes with patterns, they are very different. Learn all the patterns for a particular scale, say the major scale, but don't think of them as modes because that misses the point really - modes come later when you have a firm understanding of the major scale and all of its patterns. -------------------- Check out my Instructor profile
