I know many of us are using amp modelers and PC to record and to practice... It may be POD, Boss, Korg or whatever..
If you also use some software to record, as Reaper, Cubase among others you are able to use VST-plugins. You can really give your modeler a boost by using other software in your computer.

Here's a sample to demonstrate that. I have a PoD xt, straight into the PC soundcard and Cubase SX2 to open the vst:s and record. It's a short clip which plays the same thing 3 times:
1. Only the POD xt
2. Added VST plugin called Musicrow Preamp Emulator to add a little bit of tube feeling to the tone.
3. On top of the above 2, I added BBE Sonic Maximizer D82 to open up the sound...

What do you think, better or am I tonedeaf?

Thanks for that info. I really need to put some time into Reaper and learn to use it better.

Yeah. I'm only getting to grips with Sonar and using EZdrummer. I really need to see what other VST's can help my sound and other software. smile.gif Thanks for this comparison.

I think this did a lot of good to the sound. Great demo! I googled it and found this http://www.mcrow.net/Preamp%20Emulator%20VST.htm
It's a free VST, right?

Yep, the preamp is free... Sonic maximizer is not.

many people use BBE maximizer to open up the sound a bit, I heard it can do wonders on bass, drums, well anything you record.
If you use a real amp, the stompbox or rack unit is the way to go, but for us modelers with PC I think the vast is a great tool too...

Great thread!

I often use iZotope Ozone to add a boost to a lackluster guitar sound.

I also go a step further, and record my sound dry, and add all the effects in software - I have Gearbox VST which is a software version of my pod, so it sounds identical, the advantage is that I can tweak the effects afterward. Delay too slow? Change it! Want a different amp sound ? Easy! Don't want distortion anymore, want a clean sound? Child's play - nothing is set in stone apart from the original performance - I like working this way.

Even if I want to record my tube amp, I will record clean, and reamp it for the mix so I can changes settings if required (still working on this though, I need a reamping box to get the impedance matching right, as it is I get monster amounts of hum and a weak signal).

This preamp is very simple, it has only a few controls, so it's real simple to work with:

I think number 1 and 3 sound the best, but its hard to judge on these bad pc speakers-also the volumes on all are not level so you may be fooled into thinking the louder ones are better

I always used to use Antares Tube in pro tools when I recorded using a pod,to give it a bit of warmth. It might be pricey but it certainly adds to any signal you stick through it be it gtrs, vocals or drums

Yeah, I chose not to adjust levels at all. Since the volume on all the channels are the same, you can also see the effect in sheer volume and boost. But I agree, if we only wanted to hear the effect on the tone I should have put all 3 volumes at the same level...

EDIT: Ok here's another one with the volume levels better adjusted... Now I feel #2 is like a blanket over the speaker, the preamp does that, but in #3 the Maximizer opens it up with more dynamics.. I think?

Yeah, cheers.the levels are a lot better so its easier to judge the tones on them now

Number 1 and3 are good-Number 3 is thicker sounding harmonicly than the original pod clip-I think they both sound realy good and can be both used.Number one would work well in two guitar tracks panned hard left and right with full band centred as it would be thinner in the mix and cut through well on rth work
Number 3 would be the solo tone(imo)as it stands out very well

Number two sounds like you have indeed a blanket over the speakers or are playing a flexy combo with its speakers pointing at the ground while all the tone comes out of the backless cab!

anyway Number 3 for solos would work very well, kinda reminds me of a Tube Screamer at work on a heavily overdriven rock tone

bTW good tone to start with, has great colour in that modern rock high gain sound

I don't really know anything about recording or computer software for music, but I'd like to learn more so I can start using that kind of stuff. Can someone recommend where I start?
