SOunds like a great guitar to me. If you know how Gibson sounds, I don't see the problem, it will sound like that.

Well, as it turns out, I was playing my own 1958 Custom Shop VOS as I read this thread.
I love it. There are two things though to keep in mind. 1) Frets are a little lower than most guitars. I believe the frets are the same on all the 50's VOS guitars. Part of the lowness may be due to the fact that the neck is Plek'ed. Yes, don't let anyone tell you different, Plek'ing is something very nice. Big difference between a Plek'ed guitar and a normal one. When I first got it the low frets bothered me. But not anymore. I was just beginning then, as I got better, I guess that does not mean much to me anymore. I think playing a Les Paul makes your hands strong, so you don't care about stuff like that after awhile. 2) Neck is fatter than your modern 50's style neck. But again, this does not bother me, again, if you play a Les Paul, your hands get strong, and you don't care about that stuff. At least that is the way it is for me. I think the sound is great largely because of the fat neck, which as you probably know, extends further into the body (as in the 50's) than modern guitars. Now I like the 50's neck, but probably would have gotten a 59 VOS, but they sell those for so much more, and from what I can see, except that the 59 has a flame top, there is no difference in quality between the two. In fact I don't know if my top is one piece or two piece, I absolutely cannot tell. Sometimes I think it is a one piece top, sometimes a two piece top. I don't know, it looks like one piece to me. I don't think it has the long neck tenon, probably I would not think it sounds as good as my 58, but for those who want a slim taper neck, it has that, 60 was the first year that was available. Ok, here is the expensive 60 VOS with slim taper http://www.guitarcenter.com/Gibson-Custom-...985-i1149817.gc It has long neck tenon. I don't know what other differences. Maybe the cheaper one does not have the bubble bee caps. I don't know. You would have to research it. But other than the flame, I think there is very little difference between the $3000 and $5000 VOS guitars. Except if the cheaper 60 does not have the long neck tenon as my 58 does. My 58 sustains very noticeably better than my other les paul, I think that is because of the long neck tenon. My guitar sounds a lot like Marcus S. on Pentatonic Solo I think. If I had it over again, I would want to try the $3000 60's before I decided. I am not crazy about slim necks, and it might be missing a few things as I mention, I would have to check it out. But I am fully satisfied with my 58. I think I prefer a fatter neck on a Les Paul. |

I still am amazed by the sustain I get. It is substantially more than on my other Les Paul, which I think sustains fine. But notes just hold forever.
