Hello All,

I have been looking for a while and think I am going to pull the trigger on a new guitar. I have a Epiphone Les Paul Custom currently. The weight of the guitar (yeah I am old tongue.gif ), and the difficulty I have with playing on the higher frets are the main reasons.

I am considering an Ibanez (love the neck), LTD, and a Shecter. All are in the $600 range.

Any pros or cons that I should be aware of? When people say the LTD is a Metal guitar is the because of the stock pickups? If so I could just put a passive pickup in the neck and be good to go?

At the end of the day I am sure I would be happy with either but would value some non-biased input.

Thanks,
Brian S.

If you are getting an Ibanez I'd get a Prestige (made in Japan) model. I love my RG2570. Their necks are really thin, I think that's what I like the most.

I would say the first thing I would make the major factor of a guitar is the feeling. Do you like how its held, the action/tension, neck width/radius/thickness. After that its really fair game. You can change pickups to suit your need.

I've owned a LTD, the only reason I got rid of it was because it was a V so it was standing or attempt to balance and play it. My friend is a loyal Ibanez fan, he loves the thin neck that it has and how light they are. Schecter I've sat down and played them they feel like a standard guitar, average across the board nothing ever stood out to buy one tho.

I've been in the mood for a new guitar it depends on what I would like to go with. If I go a 7-string I'm getting an Ibanez, id a 6-string, I'm contemplating a Parker Nitefly because they come with a piezo so I could get a more natural acoustic sound out of an electric so it would be more versatile.

Yeah they've all got plus points. Purely on a visual test, the LTD and Schecters seem more solid and positive wheras Ibanez's have always been a bit too 'dainty' for me.. smile.gif

I have owned an Ibanez Prestige and an LTD for many years now, great guitars (note that the LTD is the 'Deluxe' version). If you're wanting good upper fret access, check out the LTD H series, or pretty much any of the Ibanez lot (RG Prestige). All depends on what type of neck you like, as for the pickups, I have stock EMGs in my LTD, and they're too awesome to switch out tongue.gif

.. so go out and try some guitars from that list!

Thanks for the input. I am going to spend a few hours on Sunday playing everything I can in my price range.

Are all the Ibanez RG models also Prestige Models?

Thanks Again,
Brian S.

Not sure really, I tried these guitars only in store, and Schecter cheaper models didn't seem that great in terms of intonation and built, LTD models being nice and sturdy, but not with a great tone, and Ibanez being somewhere in the middle, with lower-middle class (but standardized) tone and feel.

I suggest that you try as much of these as you can, this would make sure that you get your own opinion on that matter, which will be most important one, since you will be playing this guitar after all.

No. The Prestige models are the top tier, the new Premium models are just below that, and then you have the standard RGs at the bottom.

I'd also try some PRS SE models, they are very good products in respect to both price and quality.

A fast way to know if an Ibanez is made in japan (Prestige) is that it has four figures, so RG2550, RG3570, etc would all be Japan made.

As has been suggested, it's critical you play these before you buy. Nothing is worse than buying the guitar you think you want then getting it and realizing that you really wanted the one you ended up playing in a music store a week later. For some folks it's tough as they don't have any good stores close. If at all possible, make the trek and try each actual model you are thinking about through an amp that is similar to what you've got. Youll be glad you did wink.gif

Thanks Again All.

I am lucky and have 2 large stores within a 30 minute drive.

Guitar Showcase in San Jose, independent store. I look to give them my business instead of...
Guitar Center in San Jose, and a smaller one closer to me in Gilroy.

And the wife has given me a pass for Sunday to spend some time looking, at guitars that is tongue.gif
