Well everyone I had a few hours to play while I slow cooked some chicken on the grill so this something I thought I might have fun with. You have to practice when you find time right?
Once again this is by ear but I'm very happy with the progress I'm making. Also all of your advise with my uploads has been kind and very helpful getting to where I am now.
Uploading your practice sessions is the best way to get help and great comments! I hope more of you decide to do stuff like this. It's not always about uploading the perfect track all the time. Just when it counts!
I no this needs some cleaning up but hey, I had to play with the whammy bar in my hand which I'm not use to but thats what this is all about. You'll hear when I try to grad it probably.
Any comments are welcome! I feel like things are starting to take a turn for the better with my playing and I hope you enjoy it. With a little encouragement I might perfect it and upload a video as well.
Cheers everyone and happy Memorial Day!
EDIT: Scroll down a few post for the MP3

Mentoree to mentor... Sounds good man but just some honest opinion which I know you want. First off I think it has a bit too much gain. Did you play the whole piece with bridge bucker in your strat? I would love to hear the neck single at :47 or so in (2nd verse) then switch back at 1:30 or so then back to neck or so at 1:50 and so on. This song has so much feel I can't even describe it and it takes a lot to cover it perfectly and I think you have done a fine job so far.
Sounded like you were a bit out front in places and a bit behind in others. May have just been the mix but I know you are all over that...
I know Garry plays with a big fat tone animal but I think you can achieve his tone (or get a bit closer to it) with your fender. Thanks for the upload Jeff, I love your playing and this tune! Keep digging at it and you will have this one nailed!
Again, just honest opinion but then again, my opinion is limitted knowledge so take it for what it's worth.
Cheers bro, Steve

Your opinion is honest and that's all a can ask for so thanks bro! I can fix the playing and your right about switching the pickups. Timing is off for sure, but I had to think about the Chicken on the grill and my family. Plus I had a few beers!
The problem is my neck pickup is crap and muddy when it comes to the bigger strings it gets lose and spongy (no definition).
I'll keep working on it

Is this a better mix Steve?
It's still the same crapping playing, just a different mix in the DAW!

Man Jeff, you are reading my mind these days. First you upload "If i could fly", which i practice as well and now "The Loner" ..
Always enjoy to hear your takes. Nice playing, keep working on it. Especially the end starts to be fun. This song is a classic. You really did a lot of progress. Good work !!
Most difficult i find to get the vibrato smooth and stable on all these long notes. This song can easily sound boring without adding life to each note. You did this quite well already. Overall i like your vibrato, but for my taste you could add even more .. or maybe it's the reverb/delay setting which blurs your vibrato a bit.
Check out this version of Kelly Simonz. It's maybe not everybody's tasted to hear this song with high-gain sound, but you can steal some nice phrasing ideas from him, especially about vibrato.
Actually i rediscovered this song on the search for sound examples before i bought my guitar (Ibanez SV) and found this video, which convinced me completely ..
Btw .. you are right, we should upload much more "work in progress" takes. To get feedback while still working on songs has a lot of value.

Listening at work on a different computer but yes, I think this mix is much smoother man. Whatever you did, it took some of the bite off of it! Maybe a little EQ'ing? I like it a lot!

Thanks Andy! I always appreciate your comments. I think you and I have some things in common when it comes to guitar and playing style. Only difference is you play way better.
Kelly's version on youtube is really good. Thanks for the share.

Yeah, played with the EQ and added a little compression. It's a work in progress. Always something to learn and tinker with.

Some timing issues, but pretty good man!!! Also your vibrato is pretty nice, maybe just slow it down a bit when bending.

Nice job on this song. I like it. Gonna learn that song as well ! Think it's a good one to learn good phrasing, bending and legato !

Very cool version sted, there were couple of unsteady bend+vibrato notes towards the end, but all in all great control over the tone, and vibrato was excellent! Keep it up man!

Thanks for your comments. Timing needs to be tighter for sure. I listened to it again and I agree with trying to slow down the vibrato in places. It needs to be slower and wider on some notes.

I'm glad you liked it even in the ruff stage it's in. Thanks for your kind comment. This is a great song to practice because it will make you very aware of different techniques you need to perfect. Some things that we play sound fine while were're playing but when you record and listen back it's very different what you hear. At least for me anyway.
If you decide to upload a take or need some help working on it let me know.

Thanks Ivan! The end was a train wreck for sure because I hit 2 bad note.
I'll finish figuring out the whole song and polish things up. When I uploaded it I would love for you to comment again if you have time.
Cheers everyone

Thanks mate, I wouldn't mind switching places with some of your uploads either!
Here is another upload. I am trying to get use to mixing things in the DAW with VST EQ and other effects like compression (playing around with the same track just being more of a sound engineer). If you've listened to the one above as well as this one I would really like your comments on which one you think is a nicer final mix.
Well there is a lot to be said and elaborate. I am not going to be strict and go to all those tiny details. I would just say simply - I like it

Well as long as you like it that's all I can ask for Emir. Glad you enjoyed it. You and I know there are timing issues along with some other things but it felt good to get back on the horse so to speak and ride. I'll back the drive down some when I do a final cover upload. Just a little

Very nice work! The vibrato and feeling of it all is very good. The whole thing sounds very fluid and smooth.
There's a really odd bend near the end though

Hey Trond thank's for stopping by and having a listen. Your comments always mean a lot.
I've been trying to work on my recordings and how to make them sound like I want. Your budy Paal was nice enough to point me in the right direction of some cool VST's that I'm going to play with hopefully this weekend.
As far as the odd bend (second from the end I think) it's what I like to call a 'SUCKY' note! Maybe I should do an SI lesson on this There seems to be at least one thing I screw up everytime I record
Thanks again for your comments and I hope your Dog is doing well.
